DESCENDANTS OF VALENTINE ROHE

Valentine Mathaus/Mathias Rohe, born in Rohrbach, Sankt Ingbert, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany, in 1802 was the son of Wilhelm Rohe (b. c. 1792 in Zielbach, Hessen, Germany) and Magdalena Muller (b. 1793 in Zielbach, Hessen, Germany). Other children of this marriage included Barbara (born December 10, 1810), Johannes (born in 1814) and Conrad (born circa 1812, died in 1874).  Conrad, Johannes (John) and Valentine all immigrated to the United States. 

 

Elizabeth Wagner was born in Rohrbach, Sankt Ingbert, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany in 1805 and was the daughter of Johan Wagner and Magdalena Weiland. 

 

Valentine and Magdalena were married on June 5, 1827 in Rohrbach.

 

The Baltimore Passenger and Immigration Lists (1820-1872) – Microfilm roll #1, list #25 contains the following individuals originating from Bavaria, arriving on the ship La Ville De Rouen from Le Havre on November 8, 1833:

                Valentin Rohe (age 31, born c. 1802)

                Elizabeth Rohe (age 28, born c. 1805)

                Catharine Rohe, age 6

                Margaret Rohe, age 6

                Margaret Wagner, age 17– probably Elizabeth’s sister

Catharine and Margaret may have been twins, 6 months in age, not 6 years.

 

Valentine Rohe came to Pottsville, Schuykill County, Pennsylvania in 1832 with his wife Elizabeth Wagner and where he was a farmer and then moved to Cherry Township (later Dushore) Sullivan County, Pennsylvania in 1837.  He was a farmer whose property was known during the 1960s as the Randall Farm in Cherry Twp.

 

Valentine Rohe died in Dushore Pennsylvania on February 10, 1873 at age 71.

Elizabeth Wagner Rohe died in Dushore, Pennsylvania on February 23, 1858 at age 53

They are interred together with Andrew Rohe in St. Basil’s Old Catholic Cemetery, Dushore, Pennsylvania (row 15 adjacent to Nicholas, Margaret, and Cecilia Ambs).

 

Valentine Rohe remarried after Elizabeth’s death in 1858.  His marriage to Mary Bartch occurred on April 20, 1858 and they were divorced on May 30, 1863.  A listing in the Sullivan County Democrat (newspaper) states that they were married in Headleyville PA on April 20, 1858 and that on August 12, 1859, Valentine Rohe had the following printed in the newspaper “Notice whereas, my wife Mary has left my bed and board, without any reasonable cause I hereby forbid all persons harboring or trusting her on my account, as I shall pay no debts of her contracting after this date, March 22, 1859.  Valentine Rohe”

 

 

The following children were born of the marriage of Valentine Rohe and Elizabeth Wagner:

 

(1) Margaret (born in 1832 in Germany, died in 1876) immigrated to the United States with her parents.

                Married Nichlaus (Nicholas) Ambs in Cherry Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania in 1850. 

Nichlaus Ambs was born on August 6, 1822 to Xever (Xavier) Ambs and Mary Ambs.  He had

immigrated from Germany to Philadelphia at the age of 9 with his father.

                                Mary Ann  - born July 14, 1852, died August 11, 1926

                                Elizabeth – born April 24, 1854, died May 9, 1908

                                Cecilia (Cilia, Tackele) – born 1856, died January 14, 1934

                                Margaret – born July 5, 1859, died November 8, 1935

                                Frank N. – born December 1862, died August 8, 1933

                                Hannah A. – born 1865, died before 1935

                                Louise A. (Louisa) – born October 7, 1873, died April 1, 1951

                                George William – born 1875

 

 

(2) Catherine (born 1832 in Germany, death date unknown) immigrated to the United States with her parents.

                Married Christopher (Christian) Rahm who was born circa 1811 in France.

                                                Henry – birth date unknown

                The family lived in Cherry Twp. in 1860.

 

 

(3)  Peter (born in 1836 in Pottsville, PA; died July 22, 1905.  Interred in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Overton, PA)

        Married Hannah Hartzig who was born on June 16, 1863 and died on March 28, 1938.

(5) Hannah (born January 17, 1843, died May 19, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN)

                Married Andrew Heinrich (Henry) Knaeble on March 7, 1859.  He died on December 29, 1865 in

Rockport, MN.

                Married Wilhelm Knaeble on April 29, 1866 in Minnneapolis, MN.  He was born February

4,1834 in New York and died December 30, 1916 in Minneapolis, MN.

                Married Louisa Weisbrod in 1869.  She was born on July 12, 1844 and died on March 1, 1905. 

                Valentine was a farmer in Cherry Township, PA

                Married Margaret Jane Brown.  She was born July 10, 1851 and died December 13, 1912

                Married John P. Evetts (Evitts/Evitz).  He was born circa 1852 and died after 1930.
