(60t): Introduction.

The following is my own genealogy, but it includes the genealogy of almost all people related to me to some extent. It turns out that many of us are descended from English Knights, Pilgrims on the Mayflower, Dutch pirates, North African concubines, a Colonial soldier scalped by Indians that lived to tell about it, one of the first settlers in Brooklyn, and many totally average people. In turn we are distantly related to many famous and infamous people including various the Governor of Plymouth Colony, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Vanderbilts, the Whitneys, Actor Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Actor Richard Gere, and many others.

People Numbering: The genealogy is structured by family name as much as possible. There are many family members with the same name (e.g. there are several named “Thomas Southworth”) so within each family line there are italicized numbers in parentheses (e.g. 121x) to designate each individual person in that family. Letter suffixes are used on the “person numbers” to indicate the main family line. The main families (and letter suffixes) used are:

  • Calverly (c)
  • Drewry (d)
  • Hampton (H)
  • Hare (h)
  • Jansen (j)
  • Kendall (k)
  • Knaeble (K)
  • Lister (l)
  • Pratt (p)
  • Rees (r)
  • Rohe (R)
  • Southard (s)
  • Tyler (t)
  • Ziebarth (z)

I have started with the “person number” of “1.1” for the oldest person I know of in each branch representing the root name. The first number represents the generation (i.e. 1st generation, 2nd generation, etc.). The first number after the first decimal is a sequential numbering of people in that generation. For example, the number “8.1k indicates the first person sequentially in the eighth generation of Kendalls, John Kendall in 1548.

A spouse of an individual in the family line is indicated by the suffix “-s1 so “1.1k-s1” indicates the first spouse of the first person in the first generation of Kendalls. So if we knew who John Kendall’s first spouse was, her number would be “8.1k-s1”. A second spouse is indicated by the suffix “-s2”. So if John Kendall married a second spouse, her number would be “8.1k-s2”. And if a spouse remarries a second person (after marrying the person in the family line), an additional suffix of “-s2” would be added so that if John Kendall died and his widow then married some other man, his number would be “8.1k-s1-s2”, meaning “person 8.1k’s first spouse’s second spouse”.

Occasionally a person in the middle of one family line ends another family line. In those cases the “person numbers” reflect the merging of two lines. For example if a person in the 5th and last generation of the Rees line (“5.5r”) was the first spouse of someone in the 13th generation of the Kendall line (“13.1k”) the person number would be “5.5r/13.2k-s1”.

Occasionally we know one or more ancestors of people who married into a family line, and instead of giving their entire line the connection is described briefly with a different sort of number for those ancestors beginning with the “generation number” for that person, a hyphen, the number of the person to whom they are an ancestor, and then a relationship letter that is an “f” for father, “m” for mother, “ff” for “father’s father”, etc. For example, the number for the first spouse of John Kendall (8.1k) would be “8.1k-s1”, and if we knew who her father was he would be listed as “7-8.1k-s1f”. This means 7th generation, related to “8.1k-s1” and it is her “father”. If we knew the same woman’s paternal grandfather, the number would be “6-8.1k-s1ff” meaning 6th generation, related to “8.1k-s1” and it is her “father’s father”.

Occasionally relationships become more difficult to describe by the numbers. For example, the first spouse of Edward Southworth (5.4s) was Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1). Edward died and she married William Bradford (5.4s-s1-s2), one of the most famous Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Bradford had been previously married to Dorothea May so her number is “5.4s-s1-s2-s1” indicating the “first spouse’s second spouse’s first spouse”. William and Dorothea had a son, John and his number is (6-5.4s-s1-s2-child1) indicating a 6th generation person that is “child1” of the second spouse of the first spouse of a person who is in the family line.

While this may be cumbersome, you can always tell people apart and can do a “word search” on a person number to see all entries and connections for that person.

The structure of the genealogy is that a person will be named, followed by the person (or persons) they married, followed by their children. Those people that are my direct ancestors are listed in bold font as follows:

  1. My ancestor (my direct ancestor so in bold font)
    1. My ancestor’s spouse (my direct ancestor so in bold font)

                                                               i.      Their daughter (not my ancestor)

ii.      Their son (not my ancestor)

1.      The known spouse of that wife

a.       The known child of that couple

iii.      Their son (my direct ancestor so in bold font)

1.      His wife (also my ancestor)

a.       Their son (not my ancestor)

b.      Their daughter (my ancestor)

                                                                                                                                       i.      Her husband (also my ancestor)

Generations: The number of generations traced for each family is as follows:

  • 4 - Calverly (c)
  • 4 - Drewry (d)
  • 5 - Hampton (H)
  • 4 - Hare (h)
  • 3 - Jansen (j)
  • 21 - Kendall (k)
  • 9 - Knaeble (K)
  • 6 - Lister (l)
  • 12 - Pratt (p)
  • 4 - Rees (r)
  • 4 - Rohe (R)
  • 13 - Southard (s)
  • 6 - Tyler (t)
  • 2 - Ziebarth (z)

For a given individual, tracing back generations requires going up family trees adding different generations together. For example, I am only in the fifth generation of the Tyler line (5.13t) but my mother Frances Rees Kendall (19.21k) was in the 19th generation of the Kendall line. So I can trace back 20 generations to Richard Kendal (1.1k) in 1355 along that line. I can also trace back 15 generations from my grandmother, Dixie Drewry (3.1d/3.5t-s1) up her mother’s line of Southards to Sir John de Southworth (1.1s) in 1503. Or even 16 generations to Sir John Delves (0-2.1s-s2mf), the maternal grandfather of Margery Boteler (2.1s-s2), the wife of Sir Thomas de Southworth (2.1s).

Much of this genealogy was compiled by my uncle, Donald Fowble Kendall (19.26k), to whom I am especially grateful.

Please add and correct information about you and your family and send it back to me at [email protected] so I can update this file!!

I(B). The American Kendall Line from John Kendall (9.1k) in 1580 to Levi Kendall (14.1k) in 1737:

  1. John Kendall (9.1k) [b. 1580, Norfolk, Eng.; d. 1660, Cambridge, Middlesex Cnty, England]. This was the progenitor of the American Kendalls. He lived in the county of Cambridge, England, and two of his sons came to America.
    1. Son, Deacon Thomas Kendall (10.1k) [b. ?] He was a proprietor in Reading, MA, USA in 1644, and admitted as a freeman (Mason) on 5/10/1648. He had 10 daughters but no sons, and no descendents bore his name.
    2. Son, Francis Kendall (10.2k) [b. between 1614 and 1620, Norfolk, Eng.; d. 1708, Woburn, MA, USA]. This is believed to be the ancestor of all Kendalls in the USA. He emigrated from England before 1640 because he was a signatory on town orders of Woburn, MA with 31 others on 12/18/1640. He was a miller by trade, owned a corn mill, and was a taxpayer in Charlestown, which included Woburn, in 1645. Generally the English referred to all grain as “corn” so this was basically a “grist mill”. He was admitted to be a freeman (Mason) on 5/10/1648, the same as his brother, Thomas, and he served the town as a “selectman” and on committees. When he first arrived in America he appears to have used the alias “Miles” for unknown reasons. When he died he left his mill in Woburn to his two sons Samuel and John, and it remains in the family to the present. Samuel later built a mill after 1700 some distance from the first mill.

II(B). The Family of Degory Priest (6.1p):

  1. Degory Priest (6.1p) [b. 1579, London, Eng.; d. 1/1/1621, Plymouth, MA. Possibly same person as “Digorius Prust” who was baptized in Hartland, Devonshire, Eng. on 8/11/1582, and identified as the son of Peter Prust (5.1p). This may be incorrect as the early records are not entirely clear. The English Protestants that refused to follow the teachings of the Anglican Church were called “Separatists” and were subjected to oppression by the English Crown. Consequently a large number of them fled to Leiden, Holland where they lived in conditions of poverty. The first group to come to America are now referred to as the “Pilgrims”. Priest came to America as a Pilgrim on the Mayflower in 1621, leaving his wife, Sarah Allerton (6.1p-s1) in Leiden, Holland with children, John (7.1p), Mary (7.2p), and Sarah (7.3p). The Pilgrims were unprepared for the harsh conditions they found, and many contracted scurvy and associated diseases. About half of the Pilgrims died between December, 1621, and March, 1622. Priest was one of these. He died during the first winter, probably in January, 1622. His widow Sarah Allerton (6.1p-s1) remarried Godbert Godbertson (6.1. p-s1-s2) (sometimes called Cuthburt Cuthbertson). They came to America in 1623 on the ship Anne with the children of Priest. The ancestry of Degory Priest (6.1p) back to the line of Prusts is controverted.]

III. Ormsby Ancestry from Michael Hare (1.1h) in 1727 through Leticia Ormsby (4.1h/17.43k-s1) in 1845.

  1. Michael Hare (1.1h) [b. 6/10/1727(? Possibly 1738), County Armaugh, Ireland; d. 3/3/1843, Waterford, PA] Came to Amercia in 1748, possibly as an Irish recruit in the British Army. He fought for the British under General Braddock in defeat along Monongahela in 1755, under General Forbes in taking of Fort Duquesne in 1758, and in Battle of Bushy Run in 1763. Later fought for Revolutionary Army against the British with 1st Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment of Northcumberland County in 1775 along the Susquehanna River. In 1776 he enlisted under Col. Hartley’s Regiment and fought near Boston and later in on Long Island and at Strong Point. In 1778 he joined Captain Jeramiah Laughery’s Regiment and, was sent to New Orleans for supplies. The expedition was massacred by Indians en route, and Hare was taken captive but later escaped. In 1779 he fought under Col. Brodhead against the Indians. In 1781 he accompanied Lockley’s regiment down the Ohio. The expedition was massacred and Hare again taken prisoner.  He later witnessed the Indians kill Col. Crawford (for whom Crawford County, PA is named). Then he was marched to Detroit, to Quebec and later to Philadelphia after the end of the Revolutionary War. In 1791 he again enlisted to fight under St. Clair against the Miami Indians. That force was defeated on the Wabash River in Ohio, and Hare was scalped and left for dead. He recovered and traveled to Westmoreland County, PA, a trip of over 300 miles. In 1798 he moved with his wife, Elizabeth (1.1h-s1), to Hare Creek, near Corry PA. Later he moved to Oak Hill, PA. His first child, a son, was born in 1815. In 1827 he taught school in his home. All of this is documented and available on the internet.

  1. Thomas Pennington Rees (1.1r) [b. before c 1817; d. after c 1817]
    1. Married ? Evans  (1.1r-s1) [b. before c 1817; d. after c 1817]. There is a family story that Thomas Rees was related in some manner to Mary Anne Evans, the English authoress who wrote under the name of “George Eliot”. There may be some link through this unknown mother named “Evans”.

                                                               i.      Son, Thomas Rees (2.1r) [b. c 1832, OH]. Thomas Rees (2.1r) is listed on the 1870 census for Crooked Creek Township, Cumberland Cnty, IL as being 38 years old, suggesting he was born about 1832. He was a farmer, born in Ohio. Besides the family listed below, that census also showed that there were two other teenagers living in the home in 1870, Thomas W. Castel (15 years old) and Sarah L. A. Castel (14 years old).

1.      Married Rosannah (a.k.a. Rose Anne) Hampton (5.1H/2.1r-s1) [b. c 1832, IN]. Rosannah Hampton (5.1H/2.1r-s1) is also listed in the census as being 38 years old indicating she was also born about 1832. She was listed as “keeping house” and born in Indiana. See V. The Hampton Ancestry from Thomas Hampton (1.1H) to Rosannah Hampton (5.1H/2.1r-s1) in 1832.

a.       Son, Elbridge J. (a.k.a. Everett) Rees (3.1r) [b. c 1860, IL]

b.      Son, Jesse Willis Rees (3.2r) [b. 10/31/1861, Cairo, Alexander Cnty, IL?; d. 9/27/1940, St. Paul, MN?]. Jesse Willis Rees (3.2r) was a conductor or accountant or something for the Great Northern Railroad and was fairly well-to-do. Among other things he invented or else promoted a crank auto jack called “Rees Jacks” with the slogan “Rees Jacks Save Backs”.

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Hanna Sophia "Sophie" Knaeble (6.2K/3.2r-s1) [b. 5/10/1860, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA, d. 11/13/1926, Forrest Heights, White Bear Lake, Washington Cnty, Lincoln Twnshp, MN]. d.      Daughter, Gracy Rees (3.4r) [b. c 1866, IL; d. ?] This 4 year old girl is listed on the 1870 census, but was not mentioned in later family records or ever listed by the family later. She may have died in childhood and was later lost from memory.

e.       Daughter, Rebecca Jane (Jenny) Rees (3.5r) [b. c 1868, IL]

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Mr. Leslie (3.5r-s1). Family lived in Topeka, KS.

1.      Son, Thomas Leslie (4.4r) [b. c 1890] Became VP of Fruit of the Loom Co. in NYC in 1940s.

f.        Son, Lewis Rees (3.6r). [b. after 1870?]. This son was not mentioned in the census record of 1870, so he must have been born after that date. He and his family lived in Salt Lake City, UT.

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Sadie (3.6r-s1)

1.      Son, Wallace Rees  (4.2r) [b. c 1896]

2.      Son, Leslie Rees  (4.3r) [b. c 1898]

This ends: IV. The Rees Ancestry from Thomas Pennington Rees (1.1r) circa 1836 to Mabel Anna Rees (4.1r/18.32k-s2) in 1887.
V. The Hampton Ancestry from Thomas Hampton (1.1H) to Rosannah Hampton (5.1H/2.1r-s1) in 1832.

  1. Thomas Hampton (1.1H) [b. before c 1841;  d?]
    1. Married Elizabeth Pennington (1.1H-s1) [b. before c 1841;  d?]

VI. The Knaeble Ancestry from Johann Michael Knaeble (1.1K) in 1699 to Hanna Sophia "Sophie" Knaeble (6.2K/3.2r-s1) in 1860.

VI(A). The Knaeble Line in Germany from Johann Michael Knaeble (1.1K) in 1699 to Andreas "Andrew" Edward Knaeble (15K) in 1801.

  1. Johann Michael Knaeble (1.1K) [b. c 1699]
    1. Married Francisca Schmiedin (1.1K-s1) [b. 1700, Germany; d. 9/2/1775 (or 9/1/1775?), Germany]

                                                               i.      Son, Andreas “Andrew” (Louis?) Knaeble (2.1K) [b. 11/29/1731, Obendorf, Germany; d. 7/29/1788, Germany.]

1.      Married Anna Maria (Maria Anna?) Brandecker (2.1K-s1) [b. 10/14/1729, Germany; d. 12/4/1773, Germany] on 9/18/1752 at Obendorf, Germany, the daughter of Hieronimo Brandecker (1-2.1K-s1f) and Maria Agatha Schmiedin (1-2.1K-s1m) [b. 1693?; d. 12/4/1775]

a.       Son, Michael Knaeble  (AKA “Andrew Louis Knaeble?”) (3.1K) [b. 9/27/1766, Obendorf, Germany; d. 11/19/1844,  Germany (Baden).]

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Margaretha Hipp (3.1K-s1) [b. 6/15/1764 (1/15/1764?); d. 10/5/1843 (10/5/1849?)] on 9/9/1788 in Obendorf, Germany, the daughter of Gabriel Hipp (2-3.1K-s1f) [b. 6/1/1733] and Barbara Schatzmann (2-3.1K-s1m) [b. 11/6/1730; d. 3/3/1798].

1.      Daughter, Theresa Knaeble (4.1K) [b. ?;  d. ?]

2.      Daughter, Marian Knaeble (4.2K) [b. ?; d. Germany]

3.      Daughter, Josepha Knaeble (4.3K) [b. ?; d. Germany]

4.      Son, Phillip Knaeble (4.4K) [b. ?; d. ?]

5.      Son, Andreas "Andrew" Edward Knaeble (4.5K) [b. 7/10/1801, Rottweil on the Neckar River, Kingdom of Wurtemburg, Germany (also said to have been born the same date at “Obernsdorf on the river Nekar in the Kingdom of Wurtemburg” and on 7/10/1802 at “Rotteneil on the Necka, Obendorf, Kingdom of Wurtemburg”. All of these are the same place, now called Rottweil on the Neckar, in the Black Forest area of the southwest corner of Germany.); d. 4/26/1888, Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN, USA] See VI(B). The American Knaeble Line from Andreas “Andrew” Knaeble (4.5K) to Hanna Sophia "Sophie" Knaeble (6.2K/3.2r-s1) in 1860.

VI(B). The American Knaeble Line from Andreas “Andrew” Knaeble (4.5K) to Hanna Sophia "Sophie" Knaeble (6.2K/3.2r-s1) in 1860.

  1. Andreas "Andrew" Edward Knaeble (4.5K) [b. 4/26/1888, Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN, USA; buried 4/27/1888, at St. Anthony Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN]. He emigrated to the US in June, 1828. It appears that both the father Michael Knaeble (3.1K) and the son Andreas “Andrew” Knaeble (4.5K) may have been called Andrew (Andreas), Michael and Johann Michael at times or else there is some confusion of the names of the father and the son and perhaps even the grandfather in some accounts. LDS records also suggest the father Michael Knaeble (3.1K) was named “Andrew Louis Knaeble”.
    1. Married Margaretha LaFevere (AKA Margaret, Barbara, LaFavre, LaFavor) (4.5K-s1) [b. 1809, near Salby Strasbourg (Strassburg?), Alsace, Lorraine, France; d. 9/24/1865, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA] on 7/30/1830 in New York City. She was buried St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore, Sullivan County, PA. Her father was Antoine LaFevere (3-4.5K-s1f), mother’s name unknown. Maragretha played the violin, and emigrated to the US arriving at NYC aboard the Constitution on 6/20/1828. Since both Margaretha (4.5K-s1) and her husband, Andrew Knaeble (4.5K) emigrated to NYC in June, 1828, it is likely they were on the same ship and met each other during the voyage. There were few immigration controls and no “screening station” at the time. Ellis Island did not open until 1890, and the prior screening station at Castle Garden did not open until the 1850s. So they probably met on the ship and not after they arrived. Andrew Knaeble (4.5K) and Margaretha LaFevere (4.5K-s1) are said to have had 15 children but information exists for just 14. Possibly “Carolus” and “Charles” were double-counted.

                                                               i.      Son, Andrew Heinrich "Henry" Knaeble (5.1K) [b. 9/23/1832 (10/14/1833?), NYC; d. 12/29/1865 (12/29/1863?), Rockford, Wright Cnty, MN] A stonemason. They moved from Cherry Tnshp, PA to Racine, WI, to Winona, MN, to St. Anthony, MN, and homesteaded in Rockford, MN.

1.      Married Hannah Elizabeth Rohe (3.7R/5.1K-s1/5.2K-s1) [b. 1/17/1843, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA; d. 5/19/1925, Minneapolis, Hennepin, MN] on 3/7/1859 at DuShore (or at Cherry?), Sullivan Cnty, PA. IX. Rohe Ancestry from Wilhelm Rohe (1.1R) to Hannah Elizabeth Rohe (3.7R/5.1K-s1/5.2K-s1) in 1843. And also see VII. Descendents of Wilhelm (William) Knaeble (5.2K). Four children, two surviving:

a.       Son, Henry Knaeble [b. 1860, Cherry, Sullivan, PA; d.1860 Cherry, Sullivan, PA.] It appears certain from matching various records that Henry was a twin to Hanna Sophia Knaeble, born to Hanna Elizabeth Rohe when she was about 17 years old, and that he died less than two months after birth. That accounts for him not being listed on the 1860 census.

X(B). Ancestry of Tyler Family from Daniel Columbus Tyler (2.11t) in 1859 to Homer Lloyd Tyler (3.5t) in 1985.

  1. Daniel Columbus (“Lum”) Tyler (2.11t) [b. 7/3/1859, probably in Choctaw Cnty, MS; d. 1914 near Norman, Cleveland Cnty, OK]. Daniel Tyler was a cotton sharecropper. The family story [according to my grandfather, Homer Lloyd Tyler (3.5t)] is that he was the youngest of 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls. He was also thought to have been a twin (which turns out to be correct as shown by the 1860 census record for Choctaw County, MS reflected above). Thought to have lived near Vicksburg, MS, but in 1860 they were listed up the Choctaw County census. That is far from Vicksburg, so perhaps they moved to near Vicksburg after 1860 and perhaps after the Civil War. The oldest girl (apparently Martha) was said to have been assigned to pick cotton and spin thread, the next girl (apparently Ann) would weave cloth from the thread, and the third oldest girl (apparently Mary) was to sew clothes from the cloth. The oldest boy (apparently William) was a shoe cobbler. After Daniel Columbus’ wife died in Texas in 1905 he traveled with his children to Arkansas and then to Oklahoma, arriving there in 1907, the year Oklahoma gained statehood. He farmed cotton west of the town of Norman. A drive-in movie eventually was built on the place that had been their farm. No record found in Oklahoma death records.
    1. Married Sara Alice Robertson (2.11t-s1) [b.8/3/1869, Temple, Bell Cnty, TX; d. in childbirth, 6/12/1905, Lufkin, Angelina Cnty, TX]. There was some confusion about whether this woman was named Susan or Sara. Apparently there was another man named Daniel Coleman Tyler in Bell Cnty, TX at the same time married to a Susan Alice Robertson. But it now seems certain Daniel Coleman was not the same person as Daniel Columbus, and Sara and Susan Robertson were two completely different people. Sara possibly was the daughter of Henry Robertson (1-2.11t-s1f) [b. c 1835, TN] and Lucy [last name unknown] (1-2.11t-s1m) (last name unknown) [b. c 1845, AL]. All children of Sara Alice Robertson (2.11t-s1) are believed to have been born in Bell County, TX. My father (Howard Tyler, 4.14t) said that the Robertsons were “very German” and during WWI Sara Alice Robertson’s brother who lived near Norman, OK was arrested for being a “German” in Oklahoma City (anti-German anger was high). He says that my grandfather, Homer Tyler (3.5t) had to go to Oklahoma City to vouch for his brother-in-law to get him out of jail. So the name “Robertson” may have been assumed by them when they immigrated.

Younger sister Ola Beatrice Tyler (4.3t)  nursed her while brother Homer Lloyd Tyler (3.5t) harvested the cotton crop on the farm where she and Cates lived. XII(A). Southard Ancestry from Sir John de Southworth (1.1s), Lord of Samlesbury and Sheriff of Lancashire in 1503 to Thomas Southworth (4.2s) in 1548-1561.

  1. Sir John de Southworth, Knight (1.1s) [b. before 1490; d. ?] Knighted in 1503, he was the Lord of Samlesbury and Sheriff of Lancashire.
    1. Married Ellen de Langton (1.1s-s1) [b. before 1490]; d. ?]

                                                               i.      Son, Sir Thomas de Southworth (2.1s) [b. 1497; d. 1/13/1546]. He was granted a divorce from Ann Stanley (2.1s-s1) in 1518 by the Pope and immediately remarried.

1.      Married Margery Boteler (2.1s-s2), daughter of Sir Thomas Boteler, Knight. (1-2.1s-s2f) and Margaret Delves (1-2.1s-s2m), who was herself the daughter of Sir John Delves, Knight. (0-2.1s-s2mf) (mother unknown). [Note that Sir John Delves, Knight (0-2.1s-s2mf), is the grandfather of Margery Boteler (2.1s-s2), and one generation older than Sir John de Southworth (1.1s).]

a.       Son, Sir John Southworth of Samlesbury, Lancaster Cnty, England (3.1s) [b. c 1526; d. 11/3/1595]. He was jailed in New Fleet Prison in 1581 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Manchester, Lancashire, for being a Catholic.

1.      Son, Edward Southworth (4.1s) was employed by the Mayflower Company at some time after 1584.

2.      Son, Thomas Southworth (4.2s), [b. 1548-1561; d. 11/30/1616]. See XII(B). Family of Thomas Southworth (4.2s) 1548-1561.

XII(B). Family of Thomas Southworth (4.2s) 1548-1561.

  1. Thomas Southworth (4.2s), [b. 1548-1561; d. 11/30/1616] was living in London in 1584. He possibly was the same “Thomas Southworth” that acted as the chief officer of the English King attempting to arrest the Separatist leaders, William Brewster, Richard Jackson and Robert Rochester, in 1607 for publishing and distributing religious tracts the King found offensive. If so it is ironic because two of his sons became Separatists themselves and fled England a few years later.
    1. Married Rosamund Lister (6.1l/4.2s-s1) [b. c 1554, Medhope, Yorkshire, Thornton, England; d ?] between 1563-1571. [Note: One source lists the wife of Thomas Southworth (4.2s) and mother of the more famous Edward Southworth (5.1s) as being named “Constance” but others sources list her as being Rosamund Lister along with her complete genealogy. Since Edward Southworth (5.1s) is a famous figure (because his widow married William Bradford (),chronicler of the Mayflower voyage and later the Governor of Plymouth Colony), this is most likely correct. See XIV. Lister Ancestry from Lawrence Lister (1.1l) circa 1467 to to Rosamund Lister (6.1l/4.2s-s1) in 1554. They had 11 children.

                                                               i.      Son, John Southworth (5.1s) [b. c 1580]

1.      Married Jane Sherburne (5.1s-s1). Note: Rosamund Lister’s distant ancestors included Sherburnes.

                                                             ii.      Daughter, Ellen Southworth (5.2s) [b. c 1587]

iii.      Son, Thomas Southworth (5.3s) [b. 1590, Worksop, N, England; d. c 1640, Leiden, Holland] left England with other Puritans and settled in Leiden Holland in 1609. XII(C). Southard Ancestry from Thomas Southworth (5.3s) in 1590 to Isaac Southard (8.1s) in 1698.

iv.      Son, Edward Southworth (5.4s) [b. 1590-1591, Samlesbury, Lancaster Cnty, England. Or perhaps Wrington, Somerset, England; d. c 1620]. He was christened in 1590 in William, Notts, England. Buried 1620/1623 in Or, Leydon, Holland. He also left England with the Puritans, and his widow later married William Bradford, one of the most famous Pilgrims on the Mayflower and eventually Governor of the Plymouth Colony. See XIII. The Children of Edward Southworth (5.4s) and Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1).

1.      Married Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1) [b. 8/3/1590; d. 3/26/1670] about 4/24/1613 (date of marriage license; Edward’s brother Thomas was a witness on the license application). See XIII. The Children of Edward Southworth (5.4s) and Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1).

                                                             v.      Daughter, Bridget Southworth (5.5s) [b. c 1592]

                                                           vi.      Son, William Southworth (5.6s) [b. c 1594]

                                                          vii.      Daughter, Margery Southworth (5.7s) [b. c 1596]

                                                        viii.      Son, Richard Southworth (5.8s) [b. c 1598]

                                                           ix.      Son, Michael Southworth (5.9s) [b. c 1600]

                                                             x.      Son, Christopher Southworth (5.10s) [b. c 1602]

                                                           xi.      Daughter, Ann Southworth (5.11s) [b. c 1606]

XII(C). Southard Ancestry from Thomas Southworth (5.3s) in 1590 to Isaac Southard (8.1s) in 1698.

  1. Thomas Southworth (5.3s) [b. c 1590, Worksop, England; d. c 1640, Leiden, Holland.] He and his brother Edward (5.4s) were Separatists (Puritans), and they fled to Leiden, Holland probably around 1609. He and his brother were both members of the Leiden, Holland Separatist congregation of the religious leader John Robinson. Leiden, Holland was the place where most “Separatists” went when they fled England. Ironically, their father, Thomas Southworth (4.2s) possibly was the same “Thomas Southworth” that acted as the chief officer of the English King attempting to arrest the Separatist leaders, William Brewster, Richard Jackson and Robert Rochester, in 1607 for publishing and distributing religious tracts the King found offensive.
    1. Married (wife unknown) (5.3s-s1) [b. before 1605; d. after 1616]

                                                               i.      Son, Thomas (Southward) Southard (6.1s) [b. c 1616, Leiden, Holland; d. 4/1/1684, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, NY, went from Leiden, Holland to Hempstead, NY in 1650. After this the name Southworth is changed to “Southward” and later to “Southard”.

1.      Married Annica (a.k.a. Annetje, a.k.a. Eunice) Antonis Jansen (3.1j/6.1s-s1) [b. c 1632, Manhattan Island, NY; d. 1658, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, NY] on 12/29/1650. See XVI. Jansen Ancestry from Jan Jansen van Haarlem (1j) in 1583 to Annica Antonis Jansen (3.1j/6.1s-s1) in 1632. They had 9 children.

d.      Daughter, Abigail (7.4s) [b. after 1643]

e.       Daughter, Mary (7.5s) [b. after 1643, Leiden, Holland]. This place of birth may be incorrect. It was found on the internet but makes little sense since they lived in what is now NY.

f.        Son, Abraham (7.6s) [b. after 1643]

g.       Son, Thomas (7.7s) [b. 1660, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, Long Island, NY; d. 3/10/1739- 40, East Fishkill, Dutchess Cnty, NY]

h.       Daughter, Enice (7.8s) [b. about 1670]

i.         Son, Isaac Southard (7.9s) [b. c 1675, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, Long Island, NY; d. 1750, Basking Ridge, Somerset Cnty, NJ]

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Grace (last name unknown) (7.9s-s1) [b. before 1683] before 1698 at St. Georges Church, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, NY]. Two known sons:

1.      Son, Isaac Southard (8.1s) [b. c 1698, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, NY]. See XII(D). Southard Ancestry from Isaac Southard (8.1s) in 1698 to James Henry Southard (11.1s) in 1817.

2.      Son, Absalom/Abraham Southard (8.2s) [b. c 1705, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, Long Island, NY; d. 3/1777, Bernards, Somerset Cnty, NJ]

XII(D). Southard Ancestry from Isaac Southard (8.1s) in 1698 to James Henry Southard (11.1s) in 1817.

  1. Isaac Southard (8.1s) [b. c 1698, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, NY; d. ?]
    1. Married Jane Pine (8.1s-s1) [b. after 1707] circa 1735. Jane Pine (42s) was the daughter of Jonathan Pine (7-8.1s-s1f) [b. after 1687, Gloucester, NJ; d. before 5/26/1733, Elizabethtown, NJ] and Phebe (last name unknown) (7-8.1s-s1ms) who married in 1720 in Gloucester, NJ. Jonathan Pine (7-8.1s-s1f) was in turn the son of Jonathan Pine (6-8.1s-s1ff) and Abigail Carmen (6-8.1s-s1fm). There are two known sons of Isaac Southard (8.1s) and Jane Pine (8.1s-s1):

                                                               i.      Son, Timothy Southard (9.1s) [3/6/1735-36, Parsippany, NJ; d. 1/31/1777, Rockaway/Hibernia, NJ].

1.      Married Susanna Sorden (9.1s-s1) [b. 4/23/1741; d. 10/16/1796, Rockaway, JN] on 5/16/1762. Her mother was named “Margaret” and she was also married (apparently after the death of Timothy Southard (9.1s) in 1777) to John McRandall (9.1s-s1-s2) [b. c 1753, Ireland; d. 5/10/1823, Rockaway, NJ] apparently until her own death in 1796. A genealogy of the children of Timothy Southard (9.1s) and Susanna Sorden (9.1s-s1)is available on the internet.

ii.      Son, Henry Southard (9.2s) [b. 1734, Hempstead, Nassau Cnty, Long Island, NY; d. 1/11/1813, Surry Cnty, NC].

1.      Married Ruth (last name unknown) (9.2s-s1) [d. before 1815] in 1787.

a.       Daughter, Elizabeth Southard (10.1s) [b. c 1781, NJ]

                                                                                                                                       i.      Married Martin T. Southard (10.1s-s1) [b. 1772, NJ; d. 1853-1860, Surry Cnty, NC] on 3/5/1807 at Surry Cnty, NC. Note: Elizabeth was a Southard born in NJ, and she married a “Southard” born in NJ in NC when she was 26 years old. Her father (born in NY) died in NC, and so did she and her husband. So she probably moved with her parents to NC and then married a cousin.

1.      Son, James Henry Southard (11.1s) [b. 1817, Wilkes Cnty, NC; d. after 1860] See XII(E). Southard Ancestry from James Henry Southard (11.1s) in 1817 to Maggie Elizabeth Southard (13.1s/2.7d-s1) in 1881.

    1. Married Sarah Gentry (11.1s-s1) [b. c 1824, in NC; d. after 1851, Norfolk, Baxter Cnty, AR]  in 1849.

XIII. The Children of Edward Southworth (5.4s) and Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1).

  1. Edward Southworth (5.4s) [b. c 1590, Samlesbury, Lancaster Cnty, England, or perhaps Wrington, Somerset, England; d. c 1620], christened in 1590 in William, Notts, England, and buried 1620/1623 in Or, Leydon, Holland. He and his brother Thomas (5.3s) were Separatists, and he fled to Leiden, Holland probably around 1609. He and his brother were both members of the Leiden, Holland Separatist congregation of the religious leader John Robinson.
    1. Married Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1) [b. before 8/3/1590, Wrington, Somerset, England; d. 3/26/1670, Plymouth, Plymouth, MA] on 5/28/1613 at Leiden, Holland. The marriage license (civil certificate) for this marriage was issued on 4/24/1613, and Edward’s brother Thomas Southworth (5.3s) was listed as a witness on the marriage license. Her parents were Alexander Carpenter (4-5.4s-slf) and Priscilla (a.k.a Druscilla) Dillen (4-5.4s-slm). [Note that after Edward Southworth (5.4s) died his widow, Alice Carpenter (5.4s-s1), married William Bradford (5.4s-s1-s2), one of the most famous Pilgrims on the Mayflower. Bradford had been previously married to Dorothea May (5.4s-s1-s2-s1), and they had a son, John (6-5.4s-s1-s2-child1). Bradford and his wife Dorothea left their son behind when they sailed on the Mayflower, and Dorothea died in 1621when she either fell or jumped from the Mayflower as it laid at anchor in Massachusetts. Bradford then married Alice (Carpenter) Southworth (5.4s-s1), and together they had three more children together, (Maj.) William Bradford (7-5.4s-s1-child3), Mercy Bradford (7-5.4s-s1-child4) and Joseph Bradford (7-5.4s-s1-child5).]

                                                               i.      Son, (Ensign) Constant Southworth (7.10s) [b. 1614/1615, Leiden, Holland; d. 3/11/1679, Duxbury, Plymouth, MA]. Christened 1615, Leiden, Holland. Buried Mar. 1678 in MA.

ii.      Son, Thomas Southworth (7.11s) [b. 1616/1617, Leiden, Holland; d. 12/8/1669, Plymouth, Plymouth, MA]. Christened 1616, Leiden, Holland. Buried Dec. 1669.

Since William Bradford (5.4s-s1-s2) is a very famous person the genealogy of the descendents of Edward Southworth (5.4s) is readily available on the internet.

XVI. Jansen Ancestry from Jan Jansen van Haarlem (1.1j) in 1583 to Annica Antonis Jansen (3.1j/6.1s-s1) in 1632.

  1. Jan Jansen (Janszoon, Janszn) van Haarlem (1.1j) [b. before 1583, Netherlands; d. after 1640]. Jan Jansen van Haarlem (1j), according to well-documented sources readily available on the internet, was a Dutch legal “privateer” for Holland in the 80 Years War. He was from Haarlem, Hollandand operated out of Dunkirk, which was part of Protestant Flanders at the beginning of the war. After Dunkirk was captured by the Habsburgs in 1583 he moved his center of operations south to the Barbary Coast. He is eventually named admiral of the Moroccan Navy and spends several years in the city of Salee. He then became essentially a pirate who adopted Islam and acted as the Admiral of the Sultan of Morocco's fleet at Salee. He was thereafter known as known as “Morat Rais.” The Moroccan Port of Salee was used to attack European shipping, and they raided ships and villages as far away as Ireland. They are referred to in sea shanties as “Salee Rovers”, and he is very famous in Dutch and Irish history. There is an early Dutch music ensemble called “Camerata Trajectina” about him. The History Channel has aired a documentary about him that says he raided Irish and English villages, loaded all of the village population on board his ships, and took them to Algiers to be sold as slaves. Jan Nansen van Haarlem (1.1j) had two sons, Abraham Jansen van Salee (2.1j) and Anthony Jansen Val Salee (2.2j) by a Moroccan or Moorish concubine. Some accounts indicate that Anthony and Abraham had different mothers, and that one had a lawfully wedded, Dutch, White mother while the other had the Morrocan or Moorish mother. But that seems to not be true, and is probably a result of the fact that Abraham later had a son by a Black woman in New York who became the progenitor of that entire wing of the family in America. It also may be an effort (or hope) by descendants to claim that they were of totally European blood. A number of documents from the period refer to both of the Jansen van Salee brothers as being “Mulatto”. Later Anthony was nicknamed “the Turk”, and Coney Island was often referred to as “Turk Island” in reference to him. Together, Anthony and Abraham van Salee are attributed to be the ancestors of many famous people including the Vanderbilts, the Whitneys, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Humphrey Bogart. I am not certain how each of these famous families relate or whether they descended from Anthony or from Abraham. John Hammond of Columbia Records (the son of a Vanderbilt) is one descendent, and he played an important role in the establishment of the Black music industry. Back then, there would have been no option possible for publicly declaring himself black according to the "one drop" racial code that was the law in most states until the Johnson administration. Jackie Kennedy Onasis was another descendent, but when asked she insisted on referring to the van Salees as 'Jewish'. Apparently she found it preferable to claim Jewish background to North African. Humphry Bogart is also said to be a van Salee descendant. A few years later, another descendant attempted to pass off the racial description of the van Salles in the official records as nothing more than malicious rumor.
    1. “Married” (unknown Moroccan or Moorish concubine) (1.1j-s1) before 1607.

                                                               i.      Son, Abraham Jansen van Salee (2.1j) [b. ?]. Abraham (2.1j) had an illegitimate son by an unnamed Black woman, and that son (name unknown to me) became the progenitor of that entire wing of the van Salee family. One of Abraham’s descendents, Dr. John van Salee De Grasse, born in 1825, was the first of his race to be formally educated as a doctor. A member of the Medical Society of Massachusetts, he also served as surgeon to the celebrated 54th Regiment during the Civil War. His sister, Serena, married George Downing who was not only an enormously successful black restauranteur both in New York City and in Newport, RI, but a man who used his wealth and connections with the East Coast's most powerful white families to effect social change for his people. Because of his organization and his own contribution to the purchase of Truro Park in Newport, one of the streets bordering it still bears his name.

ii.      Son, Anthony Jansen van Salee (2.2j) [b. 1607, Fez, Morroco; d. 1676, Gravensend, Nassau Cnty, NY]. He was a Moslem and research indicates he never converted to Christianity. His copy of the Koran was in a descendant’s possession for about 50 years before, ignorant of the family history, it was sold at auction.

1.      Married Grielje Reyniers Egberts (2.2j-s1) [b. c 1602, Wesel, Germany (other accounts say born Amsterdam, Holland); d. 1669, Gravensend, Nassau Cnty, NY] aboard ship on 12/15/1629. She had previously married Albert Egberts () [b. ; d. 1628] on 9/26/1626 in Amsterdam, Holland. Accounts indicate that Anthony Jansen van Salee pressed for marriage aboard ship by a sea captain because a marriage by a Christian minister would be distasteful to him. They arrived on Manhattan Island about 1630. Because of behavior by Grielje Reyniers Egberts (2.2j-s1) that has been described as “anti-social” Anthony Jansen van Salee (2.2j) left Manhattan Island after his daughter Annica (a.k.a. Annetje, a.k.a. Eunice) Antonis Jansen (3.1j/6.1s-s1) was born and became one of the first settlers of Brooklyn on land adjacent to Coney Island. Until sometime in the 1800s Coney Island was called “Turk’s Island” in reference to him. In that period the term “Turk” was interchangeable with the term “Mulatto”.
