Beloved Nordmont Woman Dies

Adona Ruth Sick of Nordmont and Endicott, N. Y., died 8:30 a. m. Friday, Jan. 24, 1964 in the Ideal Hospital, Endicott, N.Y.

A teacher, author and traveler, she had been a librarian in the Endicott schools for several years. She organized dozens of Women’s Wesleyan Guilds in the Methodist Churches and had organized over fifty Youth Training Schools through the state of New York. She was active in Civilian Defense work in Endicott during the second World War.   She was honored on several occasions by her church, and the National Council of Churches cited her for her organizational work.

In Nordmont, where she spent many vacations from her exacting duties, she found time to assist in church and community enterprises. For many years at Easter time she gave the beautiful “Recall of Love” by Ralph Connor as a reading. On other occasions, she used her own original writings which hundreds of people will long remember. As secretary of the Cherry Grove Cemetery Association, she was successful in bringing some of the most brilliant speakers of our time to this small community.

Her early education was received in the Sullivan County Public Schools. Miss Sick did much research work and spent some time on the Virgin Islands with her Sister, Mrs. Emmabelle Boyles, where they did research work together, later collaborating in important papers on anthrapology.  Both spent some time in Europe In traveling and study. She was born in Nordrnont on August 20,1894, daughter of Julius J. and  Dora! Speary Sick.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emmabelle Boyles of Endicott and Mrs. Mary Mills of Elmer, N.J., and a brother, Dorson, of Dushore.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.  Monday in the First  Methodist Church, Endicott. A second service was held at St. Paul’s EUB Church, Nordmont, at 2 p. m. The Rev. Edgar Singer, her pastor, officiated at both serylces and was assisted at Nordmont by the Rev. Jerry Cline, pastor of St. Paul’s.

Burial was made in Cherry Grove cemetery, Nordmont.

Arthur William Sick, Jr., 63. of Dushore died Dec. 6, 1997, at his home. He was born Sept. 1. 1934. a son of Arthur W., Sr., and Martha Snyder Sick, in Cherry Township.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of McDermott Post 452, American Legion of Mildred.

He retired after 25 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at Laporte in the maintenance department. He was an outdoorsman by avocation.

Surviving are a daughter, Alison, of Texas; a brother, Edward of Dushore; and a half- sister. Nancy Barton of Overton.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Eddie Nilsen presiding. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore, with graveside military services conducted by members of Post 452, Memorials may be directed to the Dushore Ambulance Association, Dushore, PA 18614.

Blake M. Sick of Tunkhannock, formerly of Lovelton, died Nov. 15, 1973.
He was born in Dushore, July 22, 1899, son of the late Lloyd and Mary Stroup Sick.
Mr. Sick is survived by two brothers, Horace J. Sick and Marlet Sick, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in Tunkhannock with Rev. Robert Sheehan of the United Methodist Church, Tunkhannock, officating.
Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock.

Emmabelle Sick Boyles, 87, of Endlcott, NY, died Sept. 29, 1991, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. NY.

She was born June 30, 1904, In Nordmont, a daughter of Julius and Eudora Speary Sick. She was the widow of Emerson Boyles.

Mrs. Boyles received degrees from Ithaca (NY) College and New York University and taught music at the George W. Johnson School In Johnson City for 24 year. During her tenure she authored several articles which were published In educational journals.

At one time she was active In assisting immigrants to gain their citizenship.

She was a member of numerous professional organizations among them the American Assoclatlon of University Women; Business and Professional Women; the Broome County Republican Club; the D.A.R; various Masonic Orders; the First United Methodist Church on Endlcott for over 50 years.

Surviving are a nephew, Dr. Dorson S. Mills of Elmer, NJ, several great nephews and great-great nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two sisters, Adona and Mary and a brother Dorson.

Funeral services were held Oct. 4 In Endlcott with Rev. David A. Rockwell officiating. Burial was In

Vestal Hills Memorial Park.

Miss Catherine Sick died at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon at her home in Philadelphia after an illness of a day and a half with Bright’s disease. She was 49 years of age.
The remains were brought to the home of her sister, Mrs. Ralph Rohe on Monday evening. Funeral services were held in St. Basil’s church Tuesday morning with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
Miss Sick is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Michael Ryan of Philadelphia, Mrs. Michael Broschart of Forks township and Mrs. Ralph Rohe of Cherry township. Also two brothers, George Sick of Forks township and Joseph Sick who lives in the west.

Charles S. Sick, one of the most widely known and highly respected citizens of Cherry township died Friday, December 12th at his home at Cherry Mills.
Mr. Sick was born in Cherry township, February 13, 1841, the oldest of a family of thirteen children.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Cora Gross of Cherry Mills, Mrs. Allie Baumgartner of Sunbury, Mrs. Blanche Everling and Mrs. Edna Eichenlaub of Dushore, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Rosanna Weisbrod of Cherry township and three brothers, Wendell Sick of Dushore, William Sick of New Albany and Julius Sick of Nordmont.
Mr. Sick has been a widower for the past 15 years, when his wife, Hannah Yonkin Sick passed away.
A peculiar concidence is that ten years ago on the same hour and same date, December 12 his sister Mrs. Henry Stahl passed to the great beyond.
Funeral service were held Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Gross at Cherry Mills. Rev. W.H. Fehr officiated and based his sermon on the text: Psalm 91, v. 16, "With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation."
Interment was made in the family plot in Peace cemetery.

Sick, Charles William “Bill”                                                                  Sullivan Review Dec. 1995

Charles William ‘Bill” Sick, 73, of Dushore died December 10, 1995, at his home. He was born in Dushore March 22, 1922, a son of William P. and Kathryn T. Donahue Sick.

He was a graduate of St. Basil’s High School, class of 1940; the Wyoming Seminary In Kingston in 1941; and from the Pennsylvania State College in 1944.  Bill served with the US Army during World War 11 in the Central Pacific Command from 1943 to 1945. When he returned home In November, 1945, he purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Dushore from J.R. Rohrbaugh.

He and his wife, the former Lucille Merkel of Dushore, expanded the business and later purchased the Ben Franklin stores in Mansfield and Towanda and also founded the Fabricana Store and the Card and Gift Shop in Mansfield and the Card Shop in Towanda. This is still operated by the Sicks as Dot’s Hallmark.

Bill was very active in his church and the community. A member of St. Basil’s Church and its Holy Name Society, and the St. Basil’s Cemetery Association, he was always helping with the St. Basil’s 4^th of July Picnic and other events including the church bazaars.

He was one of the original group that formed Dushore Industries, Inc., and the Sullivan County Industrial Development Authority groups which brought employment and industry into the county.

Along with others in the group, he helped refurbish area factories, making them available for job opportunities, and sought manufacturers interested in coming to the county.

He and his wife participated in the Bow Hunters Festival since its inception running the souvenir stand for the benefit of the festival.

The Sicks were among the first families in Dushore to have a swimming pool which was used for over 30 years by community youngsters who learned to swim there with a certified swimming instructor giving lessons.

An active and loyal member of the Dushore Lions Club for over 35 years, he was always willing to participate and help with club projects over the years.

Bill and his late friend, Bob Lambert, were most loyal Red Cross Bloodmobile donors, each giving more than 11 gallons of blood in addition to organizing many of the visits

Bill Sick was a former member of the following organizations:

director, First National Bank of Dushore; later, a corporate director of Northern Central Bank. successor to the First National; Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy; Guthrie Clinic Board of Trustees; Board of Trustees of Williamsport Area Community College, now Pennsylvania College of Technology, Penn State University, Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce; Endless Mountains Association (visitors bureau); The Pennsylvania State 4-H Board; the Board of General Sullivan Council, Boy Scouts of America.  Besides the Dushore Lions Club, he was a member of Loyalsock Post 996 American Legion, Dushore; the Sullivan County Historical Society, Dushore Fire Company and Ambulance Association; the Sullivan County Republican Party, in which he served as a committeeman; and the Eagles Mere Country Club.

In his community activities. Bill was always involved in “do-good” projects, including buying and maintaining flower boxes in down town Dushore, repairing tennis courts, and giving financial support to many other activities.

Surviving are his wife, the former Lucille Merkel, whom he married In 1949; three daughters, Mr. H. Richard (Sally) Kahler of Hong Kong; Mrs. Bill (Susan) Whitworth and Nancy Sick Barrington, both of Houston, TX; a son, Scott (Ann), of Millville; a brother. Eugene of Kingston; a sister, Jane Sick Dunfee of Waverly, NY; nine grandchildren. Todd, Grant, and Christine Kahler, all of Hong Kong; Regina, Taylor and Blaine Ralston and Bill Whitworth III, all of Houston; Amanda Barrington of Houston; Katie and Hannah Sick, both of Millville; nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 13 at his church with Rev. Patrick J. McLaughlin officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Graveside military services were conducted by members of Post 996.

Donald Otten Sick of Spruce Street, Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005 at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jean Miller Sick. He was born in Tunkhannock on Nov. 20, 1931, son of the late Horace and Ella Otten sick.
Don was a 1949 graduate of Tunkhannock High School and attended Keystone College. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In 1950, he and his father founded Horace J. Sick and Son in Tunkhannock. He was active in the Tunkhannock community area all his life; was instrumental in the formation and development of the Tunkhannock Little League and the Tunkhannock Community Ambulance Association; served for over 20 years on the Tunkhannock Sewer Authority; was a 50-year member of Temple Lodge #248 F&AM in Tunkhannock; was a member of the Tunkhannock Rotary Club with 25 years of perfect attendance and was the recipient of the club’s first Paul Harris award; was active on both the local and district levels of Rotary Student Exchange Program and for many years headed the Rotary Action Committee; was a member of the RV Rotary Fellowship; a member of the Dennis Strong American Legion Post; member of the Irem Temple Lodge, Tunkhannock United Methodist Church and served as a regional director on the board of the Tunkhannock Office of Peoples National Bank.
Don was a member of Triton Hose Company since 1955, serving as secretary from 1961 to 1984 and as vice president from 1985 to the present. He was active in the planning, building and securing of funding for the new Triton Hose Company Building, was a member of the Northeast Firemen’s Federation where he served as a fire school instructor and served in many other capacities in the Federation.
Surviving besides his wife are sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Barbara Sick, their sons, Henry, Thurston, Louis and Race, all of Tunkhannock; Jim and Janice Sick, their children, Jacob and Claudia Jean of Tunkhannock; daughters and sons-in-law, Claudia and Paul Chacona of Athens, Marjorie and Bill Lawson and their children of Savannah, Will and Trisha of Effort; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Frank Wrobel of Clarks Summit; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. from the Triton hose Company, W. Tioga Street, Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Robert Wood, pastor of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church, and with Fr. Joseph Sica.
Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock.
Friends called at the Triton Hose Company Building on Friday from2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

TUNKHANNOCK - Don Sick was "Mr. Fire Company" to just about everyone who knew him. The man who also championed many other causes that put the welfare of Tunkhannock and Wyoming County first over the past half century died late last Tuesday at Carpenter Care Center. He was 73.
Born in Tunkhannock in 1931, he was active in the community all of his life.
By the winter of 1955-56, the Oldsmobile and Buick dealership which previously had only his father's name, was now known as Horace J. Sick and Son, a name it still has today.
Although he and his wife, the former Jean Miller, raised a family of two sons and two daughters, it was no secret that he also considered the Triton Hose Co. his "family."
"He was like a father to everybody," Triton Fire Chief Paul (Chooch) Shafer said. "He didn't care who you were. If somebody got out of line, he'd let you know. He could give you Hell or direction, but always, it seems, with the purpose of making you a better person."
Assistant Fire Chief Bob Cavany said Sick "had rough edges, but he always put the community and fire company above himself."
"One of the things he used to say he wanted to see accomplished before he died was a new building for Triton," Cavany said, and "he was there every day with details, architects, planning, you name it. Just thinking about it now wears me out."
"We had some rough sessions but eventually it all paid off, and frankly he was there helping us do it all, finishing up to make sure that the financing was in place." The new 17,545-square-foot building completed in the summer of 2000.
In 1974, he had spearheaded a similar drive to nearly double the size of Triton's former facility on Warren Street. That facility now houses Tunkhannock Borough offices.
But as extensive as those two expansion projects were for Triton, they were a mere fraction of what Sick did for his community.
Involved in Little League
Tunkhannock Area High School athletic director Stew Casterline, who once was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and who got his start in Little League back in the 1950s, recalled his father and Sick, as part of a group that helped build what is now known as Art Keefer Memorial Field. "The amazing fact," Casterline said was that "Sick didn't have any boys on the face of this earth." Sick's sons, Joe and Jimmy, would come later.
Tunkhannock Baseball Association president Scott Zaner said that "what we give our time to run is really a testament to what others saw fit to do in those early years, and from what I understand Don was one of the first fellows that banded together an organization here."
Clarence (Klee) Fitze, recalled Sick as "Very community minded, and you always knew where he stood. He had a way of expressing his opinion, and even though you might have disagreed with him, I don't know of very many who got upset with his speaking up."
"We served on the Citizens Bank board together and also in the Tunkhannock Rotary Club," Fitze said. "He was marvelous with fundraisers like the Rotary Auction and the Triton Fire Carnival."
He added, "You don't have a lot of people in a small town like Tunkhannock that love the town the way he did and be able to show it. The community's loss will be profound."
'Extraordinary individual'
At Sick's Saturday morning funeral service at the Triton Hose Co. house, Rev. Joseph Sica called him an "extraordinary individual."
Sica, who had previously served as pastor of Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church in Tunkhannock and is now chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, said "My memory only spans a dozen years with Don. Regardless, it is accurate to say that with his life the community loses a big part of its heart, soul, gut and conscience."
"He is the last of a long line of people who had that innate ability to stand above the rest," Sica said.
He directed his hands across the room where folks had gathered and said "Nowhere in Pennsylvania will you find a fire house like this. He conceived it, believed it and achieved it."
"But he would not like us giving him this kind of attention," Sica said. "Deep down he remained a man of extreme integrity and modesty. He was a man of fundamental fairness and basic decency and had that uncanny ability to deal with the most volatile issues, yet deal with them with a sense of fairness."
"All of you have memories of Don. Draw on them to gain strength," he said.
The Rev. Robert Wood, who has been the Tunkhannock United Methodist pastor for just a couple of years, said he felt inadequate to characterize a man who had given so much to his community and county.
He said to Sick's wife, "Jean, I have to tell you that I have never said this about anybody -- but there is an art to cursing, and it's a dying art. We live in a generation that thinks it's a matter of words. But it's more than that. A true artist curses to make his point, and he does it only to people he loves."
"Don never cursed in my presence," Wood said, but then looking out at the audience added "I have been told by a great many people that he loved a great many of you."
"Clearly, he was a man who loved life," Wood said. "He showed love through his actions, his words, and became a person you could trust. You could trust his promises and his commitment."
Tunkhannock Rotary
Dave Whipple explained what Sick had meant to the Tunkhannock Rotary -- including 26 years of perfect attendance and making sure that every third-grader in the Tunkhannock Area School District received a dictionary, a Rotary project that will now bear Sick's name, he said.
Dr. Bryan Lee, Triton's chaplain, recalled some personal moments from Triton's past, but also when the two worked together on Tunkhannock Borough's sewer and water authority.
"Most of you never saw this man working behind the scenes, but work he did," Lee said.
He acknowledged that all of the pipes bringing water to and throughout the borough were largely a result of Sick's prodding.
Congressman Don Sherwood also paid tribute to Sick. "Whenever you worked with him on a project you could learn to do it his way or go deaf. He always seemed to have it figured out. If he thought something was right, that was the way it was.
"He did so much for this community, and on balance there is only one thing I wish could be different," Sherwood said. "I wished we had him hale and hearty for a little longer."
In his closing prayer at the funeral service, Sica said of Sick, "He built bridges in our community and inspired others to cross them. Then, having helped them cross those bridges, he has now joyfully collapsed, thus encouraging us to build bridges of our own."
Enroute to cemetery
As his grandchildren carried the flag-draped casket from the Hose house to Old Glory, Triton's 1928 American LaFrance fire truck, his firefighting comrades stood at attention and saluted.
They reassembled at the east end of town, where vehicles from the Montrose and Kunkle fire companies formed a cross-ladder tribute. Sick had been a staunch supporter of all of the region's firefighters. He had also taught the annual Northeastern Firemen's Federation fire school for many years.
From there, more than 60 of Triton Hose Co.'s best marched ahead of Old Glory for a half mile to Sunnyside Cemetery where Sick was laid to rest.
But not before his comrades had a few more opportunities on this day to demonstrate their admiration.
Following some opening remarks at the cemetery by Sica and Wood, Bill Gaylord rang the bell on Old Glory eight times to denote the passing of a fire fighting comrade. Former Triton Fire Chief Jim Welch Sr. played "Taps."
Then, after some words of committal, a lone bagpiper played a tune in the distance.
The final tone out of Sick's dispatch signal over the firemen's pagers then reminded those gathered of the countless times that Sick had responded to the call for more than 50 years.
Then a radio announcement from the Wyoming County 911 Communications Center said, "Time now 13:19. Don, we will always miss you."
At which point, the siren went off at the Triton Hose Co. house for his final call to duty.

Dorson Paul Sick, 67, well known Dushore resident died Thursday afternoon In the Williamsport  General Hospital where he had been a patient for four weeks.

Mr. Sick was born in Nordmont. Pa., November 15, 1899 and was be son of the late Julius and Dora Speary Sick.

He was a graduate of Sonestown High School and attended Penn State College where he majored In bacteriology.

Mr. Sick was the bacteriologist at Harrington and Company, Dushore, which was later Philadelphia Dairies and then Foremost Dairies, from 1920 until his retirement In November, 1964.

He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge, No. 452, of Monroeton and of many sportsmen’s organizations. In earlier days he was a big game hunter in Canada and western United States.

He Is survived  by two sisters, Mr,. Emmabelle S. Boyles, Endicott. N. Y., and Mrs. Mary D. Mills of Elmer, N. J.; and a nephew. Dorson B. Mills, M.D. of Elmer, N. J.

Funeral service, were held Sunday afternoon at the Arthur L. Tubach  Funeral Home in Dushore; Rev. Roy Bower officiated. Interment was In the Cherry Grove Cemetery, Nordmont.

Pallbearers: Alex Blasi, Richard Hileman, Joseph Sick, Peter Sick, Alfred Taylor, and Harold Thomas.

Mrs. Flora Sick widow of George Sick of South Towanda, died Thursday morning at the home of her son, Robert Sick, at the age of 65 years.
Mrs. Sick was born in Forks township where she lived until 1920 when she moved to South Towanda where she has since made her home.
She is survived by three sons, Richard and Robert Sick of South Towanda and Raymond Sick of Monroeton; one brother, Leroy Rohe of Forks township and one sister Mrs. Clara Shrimp of Forks township, and six grandchildren.
Funeral service was held from her late home Saturday morning with Mass in SS Peter and Paul church, Towanda. Interment in the North Towanda cemetery.

Francis J. Sick of Mildred died Sunday, at the Geisinger hospital at Danville, at the age of 61 years.
Mr. Sick was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Sick of Cherry Township, and for a number of years has made his home at Mildred, where for the past several years he has been engaged in the real estate business.
Prior to that time he was a liveryman, and drayman for Bernice and Mildred. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Mildred for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Saxe Sick, three children, Mrs. Gordon Tubach of this place, Miss Geraldine Sick,   a student at St. Elizabeth’s College, in New Jersey and a son Louis Sick at home. Also a sister, Sister M. Kostka, of St. Ann’s Convent, Scranton, three brothers, John C. Sick of Cherry township and William P. Sick and Leo J. Sick of this place.
Funeral services were held from his late home Wednesday morning, with mass in St. Francis church, Mildred. Interment in the family plot in St. Basil cemetery at this place

Francis A. Sick, 71, of Dushore, died Monday morning, Oct. 18, 1971, at Towanda Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1900, in Mildred, the son of the late John C. and Louise Amb Sick, he was engaged in the trucking business.

Mr. Sick was a member of St. Basil’s Church and its Holy Name Society; past treasurer of the United Mine Workers of America; a member of the. Knights of Columbus; and a charter member of the Dushore Lions Club.

Surviving besides his, wife, the former Theresa Quinn Sick, are a son, John P. Sick of North Syracuse; two daughters, Mrs. S. J. (Ann) Trapani of Dushore and Mrs. Edward (Mary) de’Vente of Burlington, Vt.; a brother, Joseph Sick of Dushore; two sisters, Mrs. A. N. Gainer of Dushore and Mrs. Mildred Farley of Dushore; (another sister, Mrs. Thomas Farrell of Sayre, preceded him in death); 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call  at the Arthur L.Tubach Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, today and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to  9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 9:45 a.rn.: A concelebrated mass of the resurrection will be held at .St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

The Holy Name Society will recite the rosary at the funeral home to night at 8 p.m.

Teresa Q. Sick, 80, of Dushore, died Friday evening at her home.

She was born Nov. 23, 1902, in Murraytown, a daughter of the late Peter and Anne Fitzgerald Quinn. She attended Cherry Township Schools and graduated from Bloomsburg State Teacher’s College. She taught elementary school in Mildred for 6 years before her marriage on Aug. 13, 1928, to the late Francis A. Sick of Dushore. She later taught for several years for the Sullivan County elementary school system in Sonestown and Mildred.

She was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, Dushore; a past president of St. Basil’s Altar and Rosary Society; a member of the Bradford Sullivan County Deanery of Catholic Women and the Dushore Tuesday Book Club. 

Surviving are. one son, John P. of Mattydale, N.Y.;. two. daughters, Mrs. Sebastian (Ann) Trapani of Dushore and Harvey’s Lake and Mrs. Edward (Mary) de Vente of Raliegh, N.C.; 14 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206. Water St., Dushore, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11 am. in St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with Rev. Eugene R. Carr and Rev. John R. Polinsky and the Rev. George A. Jeffrey concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Monday 2-4 and 7-9. Recitation of the rosary at 3:00 Monday afternoon by members of St. Basil’s Altar and Rosary Society.

George Sick, aged 61 years, died at his home on the South Towanda flats yesterday after a three months illness.
He had lived there about seven years, coming from Dushore.
Besides his wife, Mr. Sick is survived by three sons, Raymond of Rome, Richard and Robert at home; three sisters, Mrs. M.J. Broschart and Mrs. Ralph Rohe of Dushore, and Mrs. Michael Ryan of Philadelphia; one brother, Joseph Sick of Idaho.
Funeral services were held Monday morning with a prayer service at the house at 8:30 o'clock and a service at SS. Peter and Paul's church, Towanda, at 9:30

Geraldine L. Sick-Rohe, age 88, of Towanda, Pa., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda, surrounded by her loving family. Gerry was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Mildred, Pa., a daughter of the late Francis J. and Edythe Saxe Sick. She graduated from the Dushore High School a member of the class of 1937. She graduated from St. Elizabeth's College in Morristown, N.J., in 1941 and from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., in 1946 with a MS in Library Science. She taught in Wyalusing and Dushore and retired as the librarian from Towanda High School. Gerry was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church in Towanda, where she was very active in its Altar & Rosary Society and various parish activities. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, and she also enjoyed being with friends, reading and flower gardening. Her devotion and love for the Lord was her guide throughout her life, and after living it to the fullest she left behind a beautiful legacy of love, friendship, support and kindness. Her wonderful sense of humor will long be remembered and cherished by those whose were blessed to have known and loved her. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Philip L. and Rose (Chilson) Rohe of Round Rock, Texas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne Rohe of Mesa, Ariz., Marguerite (Larry) Allis of Temple, Texas, Marlene Rohe of Sayre, Pa., and Mary Theresa (Anthony) Johnson of Towanda; a brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Edna Sick of Captain Cook, Hawaii; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson, Nathan L. Johnson, on April 12, 2002, and by a sister, Marian E. Sick Tubach of Dushore on Dec. 16, 1973. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at SS. Peter & Paul Church, Towanda, with her pastor, the Rev. John J. Chmil V.F., presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery, Dushore. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the P. Scranton - Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Marian Convent Chapel, Marywood, last Friday for

Sister M. Kostka Sick, I.H.M.,  a member of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Born in Dushore, daughter of the late Wendell and Sarah McDonald Sick, she entered the congregation on August 15, 1903. She was superior at Upper Marlboro and LaPlata Convents, both In Maryland; superior at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Carbondale; St. Ann’s Scranton; St. Cecilia’s, Wyoming.  She taught at St. Patrick’s  Olyphant, and St. Patrick’s, West Scranton and Holy Rosary, Scranton.

Survivors are two brothers, William, P. and Leo, both of Dushore, several nieces and nephews.  Her grandniece Sister Mary Gordon Tubach, is superior at Holy Rosary Convent, Scranton.

Horace Sick son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sick, of Cherry Mills, died September 17, aged 24 years three months and two days.
Death was caused by diphtheria, and the funeral, which was private, was the same day that death ended his sufferings. Much sympathy is expressed for the parents of the young man, who are nearly crazed with grief over their loss.

James E. Sick, 19, of Dushore, died Tuesday morning at the Robert Packer Hospital, where he had been a patient since a July 19 auto accident.

Born in Towanda Oct.31, 1961, he was the son of J. Edward and Frances Mahony Sick, of Dushore. He graduated from Sullivan County High School in 1979 and attended Penn State University.

He had been employed at the Sullcraft Manufacturing Co. in Dushore.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church of Dushore.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother Patrick  and a sister, Sue Ellen, at home; his paternal grandfather, Joseph Sick, Dushore; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Mahony, Towanda; paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Arthur McMahon Sr., Dushore and maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Francis Mahony Sr., Monroeton.; three aunts and three uncles

Funeral services will - be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore. It will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Basil’s Church, with the Rev. Eugene R. Carr presiding. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.         

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 p.m.. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Recitation of the rosary will be at 3 p.m. Thursday.

James William Sick, 71, of Tampa, FL, died Jan. 3, 2000.
He was born in Sayre Dec. 10, 1928, a son of Leo J. and Nellie Cunningham Sick.
He was a 1947 graduate of St. Basil's High School and attended Georgetown University. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1948, served in Korea and Japan during the Korean War.
He was a member of Loyalsock Post 996, American Legion, Dushore, the D.A.V. Post 120 in Land-O'Lakes, FL; and a charter member of the Lutz-Land-O'-Lakes V.F.W. Post 4932.
Mr. Sick retired in 1986 after 35 years with IBM Corp.
Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia Obert of Dushore, to whom he was married 51 years; two daughters, Antoinette of Hastings-On-Hudson, NY; Lorena Saxe of Midland, MI; and a granddaughter, Leigh, of Hastings-On-Hudson. Burial was in St. Basil's Cemetery Dushore.

Mrs. Louise Ambs Sick, died Sunday morning at her home at this place, following an illness of some time.
She was a daughter of the late Nicholas J. and Margaret Rohe Ambs, born in Cherry Township, October 7, 1873. She was united in marriage with John C. Sick in 1898. An active member of St. Basil’s church and Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by her husband two sons, Francis A. Sick of Overton Road and Joseph Sick of Cherry township; two daughters, Mrs. A.N. Gainer and Mrs. James Farley ;of Cherry township; 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Mrs. Thomas F. Farrell of Sayre.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, with Requiem mass at St. Basil’s church. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

DUSHORE - John C. Sick, 88 well known Dushore area resident, died late Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.N. Gainer of Dushore,  after a short illness. He was born in Overton, Nov. 14, 1874, son of the late Wendell and  Sarah McDonald Sick.

Mr. Sick resided most of his life in Cherry Township and was a shoemaker by trade.  He was also a postmaster in Mildred for nine years until 1907. After that he moved to a farm in Cherry Township, where he engaged in farming.

His wife, Louise Ambs Sick, died in 1951. He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore and it’s Holy Name Society.

Surviving are: two sons, Francis and Joseph of Dushore; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Gainer and Mrs. Mildred Farley of Dushore; one sister, Sister M. Kostka of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order of Manhasset, L. I., New York; two brothers, William P. and Leo, both of Dushore; 25 grandchildren and 52 great-grand children and several nieces and! nephews. Mr. Sick had another daughter, Mrs. Marie Farrell, who died  in 1948. 

Funeral services will be held the Arthur L. Tubach Funeral Home, Dushore, Saturday morning at 8:45. High Mass of Requiem will be celebrated in’ St. Basil’s Church at 9:30 a.m. interment will be in St. Basil’s.

Ruth Ann (Panichi) Sick Ruth Ann Sick (Panichi), 79 of Village Blvd., Baldwinsville, wife, mother, former Town of Salina Council person and community activist has died, August 22, 2011. She was gardening on Thursday, and passed away after a three-day illness at St. Joseph's Hospital. Ruth Sick, age 79 had celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary the previous week with her husband, John Sick, a longtime resident of Mattydale, NY, she lived with her husband in Baldwinsville during the summer and spent the balance of the year at their home in Greene Acres, FL.

Born December 26, 1931 to the late Noe and Inez Panichi in Mildred, PA, she was married and relocated to Syracuse, in 1952. She is survived by her husband, John and five children,

A longtime member of many community organizations, she served in various roles with scouting, youth sports, the American Legion and was elected seven times as Town of Salina council person. After retiring from a position at Roxboro Rd. Middle School, she moved to Florida and became active in homeowner's association and served as president and in other roles. Ruth Sick was well-known and recognized in the community and for many years had "RUTHSICK" as her license plate enabling Town of Salina residents to easily communicate with her. As an instructional aide at Roxboro Middle School, she became familiar with computers and used them to communicate regularly to family and friends through email, Facebook and with the iPad she received for Christmas. Despite her diminutive stature, she lived a large life and cast a large positive shadow over everyone she came into contact with. Emily Graifley Sick , widow of the late Joseph Sick of Cherry Mills died at her home at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 28 days.

She is survived by three sons, Frank and Guy Sick of Lovelton and Arthur at home, also one brother Lewis A. Graifley.

Joseph Sick, 80, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, passed away August 29. He had been a resident of Boundary County, Idaho, for 36 years, having moved there in 1921, from Republic, Washington.
Mr. Sick was born at Dushore on November 25, 1876, a son of Augustus and Frances Solinger Sick.
Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Frances Jessick of Coeur-d’ Alene, and a sister Mary Ryan of Philadelphia. Mrs. Edward Herman of Williamsport is a niece.
Funeral services were held from St. Anne Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael King officiating. Burial was in Grandner’s cemetery under the direction of Hillcrest Memorial Chapel.

Joseph J. Sick, 70, of Cherry Mills, Dushore RD, died July 8, 1987, at The Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. A lifetime resident of Sullivan County, he was born Sept, 13, 1916, a son of  John C. and Louise Ambs Sick in Cherry Mills. He attended school at Cherry Mills. 

Mr. Sick married the former Elizabeth A. McMahon of Cherry township on April 14, 1941. She died July 29, 1980.

The family operated a dairy farm until 1960. Mr. Sick worked for Miller Farm Equipment Co. for several years and was also employed by Dolly Madison Industries of Dushore. He retired in 1980 after working 11 years for Penn DOT as a paving foreman.

He was also the inheritance tax collector for Sullivan County for six years and for 16 years was the Cherry Township Democratic Committeeman.

Mr. Sick was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, and a member of its Holy Name

Society. He was also a member of the Dushore Fire Co.  

Surviving are four sons, J. Edward of Dushore; Gerald A. of  Mildred; Wayne H. of Howard, PA; and Thomas J. of Dushore RD; and a daughter, Mrs. Betty Ann Velardo of Dushore; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Gainer and Mrs. Mildred Farley, both of Dushore; nine grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. A grandson, James Sick, predeceased him.

Funeral services were held July 11, 1987, from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, followed

by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore with Rev. William J.. Karle and Monsignor

Joseph Cooney as celebrants. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Elizabeth A. “Betty”  Sick, 59, of Dushore RD I, died Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.

She was born in Cherry Township Dec. 22, 1920, daughter of  Mrs. Anna Farrell McMahon and the late

Arthur McMahon, Sr.

She graduated from St. Basil’s High School in 1940 and married Joseph J. Sick on April 14, 1941.

Mrs. Sick was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

She was also a member of the Democratic Women’s Club of Sullivan County.

She was currently a Cherry Township auditor.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph J., at home; four sons, J. Edward of  Dushore, Gerald A. of Mildred, Wayne H. of Howard, Pa., and Thomas of  Dushore; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Ann Velardo of Dushore; her mother, Mrs. Arthur McMahon, Sr., of  Dushore; one brother, Arthur McMahon, Jr., of Dushore; one sister, Ms. Mary McMahon of Dushore; 10 grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

Julius J. Sick, farmer of  Nordmont, passed away Thursday, August 15th., at the Ideal hospital, Endicott after being struck by an automobile at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and East Main Street, Endieott.

Mr. Sick was visiting his daughter Mrs.Emmabelle Boyles, 402 South Loder Avenue, and was crossing the street when he was hit by a 1936 coach driven by Mrs. Lena M. Brown of Endicott, RD. He was thrown 36 feet to the pavement where he suffered a fractured skull and broken right arm. He was rushed to the hospital where he died that evening.

Mr. Sick was born at Cherry Mills, December 30th., 1861, a son of the late Charles and Hannah Reinfred Sick. His father was born in Baden, Germany, in 1815 coming to America in 1836 and locating at Cherry Mills in 1839 where he purchased 71 acres of land. He was united in marriage with Hannah Reinfred in 1840. To this union thirteen children were born, all of whom preceded Julius in death.

Mr. Sick spent his early life in this vicinity; and about sixty years ago he went to Nordmont where he purchased a very desirable farm. He was united in marriage with Miss Dora Speary, who with three daughters Miss Adona R. Sick and Mrs. Emmabelle Boy le of Endicott and Mrs. Mary Mills of Elmer, N. J., a son Dorson Sick of this place and a grandson Dorson Speary Mills of Elmer, N. J., survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Cherry Grove Church, Nordmont. Rev. Clement B. Meyers pastor of the Reform ed church of the Redeemer of this place of which Mr. Sick was a member officiated, assisted by Rev. A. J. Cone of Sonestown.

The funeral was very largely attended.

Leo SICK died at his home in Cherry township Tuesday, June 2, aged 50 years. The funeral will be held Friday, the friends meeting at the house at 10 a.m. and proceeding to the Germany church and cemetery where the regular services will be held and the interment made. Mr. SICK is one of a large family of brothers and sisters, and the circle is broken by death for the first time in forty years. He has been ill with consumption for several years, and his death has been expected for some time. A wife and little daughter survive him.

He was born September 27, 1893, in Dushore, son of the late Wendall and Sarah McDonald Sick. He was a lifetime resident of Dushore and a member of St. Basil’s Church. Mr. Sick was a businessman in the Dushore area until his retirement. He operated a hardware store and later a garage.

Surviving are a son, James W. Sick of Gaithersburg, Md.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Wayt (Marie) Thomas of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Miss Lorena Sick of Gaithersburg, Md. and a brother, William P. Sick of Dushore.

A prayer service was held Friday at McHenry Funeral; Home, Dushore followed by a Mass of Christian burial with the Rev. Father Joseph Conboy as celebrant.

Interment was in the adjoining parish cemetery

Miss Lillian Sick, a daughter of William Sick of New Albany, died early Wednesday morning, July 2.
Miss Sick suffered a severe attack of Spanish Influenza last winter and never fully recovered.
She was 18 years of age and a member of the 1919 Class of the New Albany High school, having received her diploma two weeks ago.

Philip Sick, 1st and 2nd, of Cohoeton Steuben county, N.Y. are visiting C.S. Sick, of Cherry Mills. Although relatives of the Sicks of Sullivan County, the two branches of the family were unaware of each other's existence until a
traveling man told C.S. Sick of the family in New York.
Correspondence followed and an invitation to visit was promptly accepted. The Sullivan county branch emigrated from Prussia in 1840 and five years later the branch
in the family that settled in Steuben County, N.Y. left the Fatherland. It is proving a very pleasant reunion of families long separated.

Richard A. Sick of Towanda RD 2 (Airport Road) passed away Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Tioga General Hospital in Waverly following a stroke that he suffered at his home during the morning. His age was 67.
Mr. Sick, very well known and highly regarded throughout this area, was born at Overton, son of the late George and Flora Rohe Sick. He and his brothers operated the Sick Brothers Farm on the Towanda Flats for over 40 years. A number of times they were cited for their outstanding corn production. Two years ago he retired as clerk at the State Store here after being employed there for 25 years.
He was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul Church here; its Holy Name Society, and the Towanda Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel M., at home; a son, Richard Jr. of Apalachin, N.Y.; two daughters, Mrs. Francis L. McNeal and Mrs. Joann Bennett, both of Towanda; two brothers, Robert W. of Towanda RD 2 and Raymond H. of Monroeton; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A solemn High Mass of Requiem will be conducted at SS. Peter and Paul Church here Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock. Interment will be in the SS. Peter and Paul cemetery, North Towanda.

Dorothy Eleanor Potter Sick, 87, of Lovelton, died September 14, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial

Hospital, Tunkhannock.

She was born in Hollenback, November 26, 1915, a daughter of Ellery and Rose Shock Potter. Her dad passed away when she was young and her mom married Edgar Jackson who helped raise her.

Dorothy was a homemaker and devoted spouse of a well-known Wilmot Township farmer, Robert Henry Sick who predeceased her on April 19, 1983.

She was a member of the Hollenback United Methodist Church and a member of the Lovelton Grange.

Surviving are a son, Norman R. Sick of Falls Church, VA; three daughters and sons-in-law, Edith Goodwin of Mehoopany; Joyce and Ronald Roland of Edgewood, MD; Connie and Thomas Bliss of York; sisters, Hazel Plows of Duryea, and Evelyn Keeney of Wyalusing; a brother-in-law, Reese Conner of Dushore; and sisters-in-law, Helen Potter of Sugar Hill, and Marian Potter of Vestal, NY.

Also six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was pre deceased by brothers: Harold Potter, Ford Potter, Donald Potter and Kenneth Potter; and sisters, Ethlyn VanDeMark and Ruth Conner.

Funeral Services were held on September 17, 2003 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Wyalusing with the Rev. Russell C. Pierce presiding. Memorials are directed to the Hollenback United Methodist Church or to the Forkston United

Methodist Church.

Mrs. Rosanna Sick  O'Harra died Monday morning at the hospital at Hamburg at the age of 31 years.
She is survived by her husband and one son, Herman, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Sick of New Albany, five sisters, Miss Jennie Sick a student at State College, Miss Lucy Sick, a student nurse at Jersey City, N.J., Miss Margaret Sick a student nurse at the Philadelphia General hospital, at Philadellphia, Sister Mary Hildegarde, at the Mercy Convent, Willkes-Barre, Miss Amelia, at New Albany, and two brothers, Stephen Sick of Buffalo, and Augustine Sick of Endicott.
The body was brought to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Sick of New Albany. Funeral service was held in St. Francis Church at Overton, Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Thomas John Sick, (Tom) age 56, a lifelong resident of Dushore, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 01, 2010, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa.
He was born Aug. 7, 1953, the son of the late Joseph J. and Elizabeth (Betty) McMahon Sick. Tom has lived on the family estate in Cherry Mills all of his life. Tom attended St. Basil's School until 1966 and graduated from Sullivan County High School in 1972. Tom also attended Williamsport Area Community College and Scranton University.
From 1972 to 1976 Tom worked for the Department of Transportation - District 3-0 as a construction inspector. For a short period of time in 1977 he also worked for the Area Agency on Aging as Activity Director for the Dushore, Towanda and Sayre, Senior Citizens Centers. From 1978 to 1986 GTE Sylvania employed Tom in Towanda, Pa., during this period he also tended bar part time for Jay Bird's in Dushore.
On Jan. 6, 1986 Mr. Sick started work with The Department of the Auditor General, Bureau of County Audits. Tom held various auditing positions in the Department, and retired as an Audit Manager of the Liquid Fuels Tax Fund Program, a position he has held since March of 1994. He retired in from the State in December of 2009.
The years he spent with the Auditor General's office were greatly rewarding due to the work he performed and the people he worked with from the Auditor General's Department and Department of Transportation. Tom was also very proud of the working relationship he had with the officials from the counties, cities, townships, and boroughs he worked with over the years.
Tom also worked part time at the Eagles-Mere Country Club as an assistant bartender, for over fifteen years.
Over the course of his life Tom was active in volunteer work with St. Basil's Church in Dushore. He was a CCD teacher for almost fifteen year from 1973 to 1988. Also for six of those years Tom was the Director of Religious Education for St. Basil's parish. In addition Tom was the chairperson for ten of St. Basil's 4th of July picnics, working with six different Pastors over the years. Tom worked on a variety of fundraisers the parish held and he also served on various committees when the parish had a Parish Council. Fr. Eugene Carr also appointed Tom to the St. Basil's Cemetery Board in 1982.

Tom was also an active and proud member of the Sullivan County Democratic Party. Tom was a member of the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee for six years and was also a County Committeeman for eight years. Tom was also active in various state wide and congressional races in the county.
Mr. Sick was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, St. John Newman Council 12406 attaining the position of 3rd Degree Knight. Tom was also a member and past vice president of the Dushore Lions Club.

Mr. Sick is also a member of the Girardville Ancient Order of Hibernians - Jack Kehoe Chapter.
Surviving are: brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward J. and Frances Sick, Dushore, Pa., Gerald A. and Dolly Sick, Mildred, Pa.; sister and brother-in-law, Bettyann and Abraham Goodyear, Dushore, Pa.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne H. Sick on April 29, 2005.
A transferal service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, Pa., and will be followed by as Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil's Church, Dushore, Pa., with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, Rev. Eugene R. Carr, former pastor and Msgr. Willis W. West, con-celebrating. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, Pa.

BETTYANN’S NOTES:  Thomas John Sick, “Tommy”  born Aug. 7, 1953 died Friday, Jan. 01, 2010, age 56x,

He died at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa.  

Tom attended St. Basil's School until 1966 and graduated from Sullivan County High School in 1972. 

Over the course of his life Tom was active in volunteer work with St. Basil's Church in Dushore.

Tom worked for the Department of the Auditor General, Bureau of County Audits, and retired as an Audit Manager of the Liquid Fuels Tax Fund Program.  He retired from the State in December of 2009. Tommy didn’t even get his first retirement check.

Tommy first got sick:  July 15, 2008

July 20, 2008 at 7 AM, Geisinger Hospital, took out gall bladder, long operation (not Laparoscopic)

Also had a pancreas problem and kidney stones.   Hospitalized again March 24, 2009.

He was taken in the ambulance Dec. 31, 2009 and died at 5:30 AM on Jan. 1, 2010.

Wayne Hugh Sick, 54, of Williamsport, PA died Friday night, April 29, 2005, of a massive heart attack. He was born January 28, 1951 in Sayre, PA. Wayne was the son of the late Joseph J. and Elizabeth (Betty) McMahon Sick. Raised on a small farm in Cherry Mills, he attended St. Basil’s School until it closed in 1966. Wayne went on to graduate from Sullivan County High School in 1969.

Soon after graduation, Wayne purchased a small grocery store/BP gas station in Dushore, which he ran for a couple of years. In 1972, Wayne moved to State College to work at Skills Industries, Inc. as an industrial manager for 20 years.

In 1988, he had a heart attack and underwent open heart by-pass surgery. Wayne purchased a home in Alexandria, VA in 1993. With his promotion he was now working as a production manager at SOC Enterprises, helping people with disabilities. In 1996, he found out that he had the late stages of Lyme disease. In 1998, Wayne had to undergo another heart by-pass which was complicated by a severe staff infection requiring most of his sternum to be removed. Later, he was hospitalized again because of fluid around the heart. Finally, in 2002, Wayne suffered a severe back injury at work.

March 10, 2004, Wayne purchased a home in Williamsport in order to be closer to his family. He decided to pursue a career in Real Estate and had recently completed a PA Real Estate Course.

Surviving are a special cousin and friend Katie Meckley and his sister Bettyann (Abe) Goodyear; his brothers Edward, Gerald and Thomas Sick and several nieces and nephews. Wayne’s greatest joy was spending time with his nieces and nephews. He was a charismatic, caring reliable man who was always there for his friends and family no matter how hectic his own life was. Bettyann’s five children loved him like a father.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday, May 4 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, PA from 11 to 1 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at St. Basil’s Cemetery. The family will provide the flowers and direct memorials to St. Basil’s Restoration Fund, P.O. Box 1, Dushore, PA 18614.

Wayne had recently bought a home in Williamsport, PA in order to be closer to his family; because of his poor health.  Theresa Walsh had a surprise birthday diner on April 28, 2005 for Wayne’s sister.  He didn’t feel good but of course he went.  Wayne died the next day of a massive heart attack.  Wayne was a charismatic caring reliable man who was always there for his friends and family no matter how hectic his own life was.

Wendell Sick died at his home near Dushore, Friday evening, October 4th following a long illness at the age of 91 years.
Mr. Sick was a very highly respected citizen of Cherry township, where he was born and spent his entire life.
For a number of years he operated a shoe shop at his late home and later engaged in the farm implement business, which he conducted successfully for many years. He was also engaged in truck farming but the past few years owing to age he gave this up and lived a retired life since the death of his wife.
He is survived by one daughter, Sister M. Kostka, who is now located at St. Ann Convent, Scranton, and four sons, John Sick of Cherry township, Francis Sick of Mildred, William P. Sick and Leo J. Sick of this place and 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Also one brother Julius Sick of Nordmont, the sole survivor of a family of thirteen children.
Funeral service was held Monday morning in St. Basil’s Church, of which he was an active member. Burial was in the family plot in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Sarah Sick died Friday morning at her home in Cherry township, near Dushore following an illness of a few days at the age of 74 years.
Mrs. Sick was born in Cherry township, a daugher of the late Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald, who came to America from Dublin, Ireland, in 1850. Mrs. Sick before her marriage taught several successful terms of school in the county.
She was united in marriage to Wendell Sick in 1873, and to this union were born five children: John C. of Cherry township; Francis J. of Mildred, Jennie,
now Sister M. Kostka, stationed at Olyphant, Pa., William P, and Leo J. Sick of Dushore. Also one sister, Mrs. Edward Donegan of Sayre and one brother Francis McDonald of Elmira.
Funeral service was held Monday morning in St. Basil's church and was largely attended. Burial was made in the family plot in adjoining cemetery.Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. N.

Dad wanted a place for a garden and about 1907, he bought “The Mutchler Lot” just outside the Borough and across the street from Uncle Wendell Sick’s house.  (He was Grandma Cook’s brother).  Wendell sold vegetables and Momma and the children used to walk there for garden lettuce and green onions, peas, beans, cabbage.  I remember Wendell raised the first broccoli we had ever seen.

Mrs. William Sick (Catherine Mary (Katie Kelly) b.4-19-1866 d.8-28-1910 Bettyann’s G G Aunt Sullivan Review, 9-1-1910  
Mrs. William Sick died at her home in Overton township Sunday night at 10 o'clock, of heart disease, aged about 40 years.
She was in her usual health and ate a hearty supper. Death claimed her a few minutes later.
Deceased was highly regarded, and her sudden and untimely death is a hard blow to the family. She is survived by her husband and 10 children, the youngest being a baby two weeks old.
The funeral was held in the Catholic church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, with interment in the church cemetery.

William P Sick, 89 of’ Dushore, died late Saturday evening, Dec. 27, 1975 at Memorial Hospital Towanda.

He was born Aug. 22, 1886 at Dushore, the son of Wendell and Sarah McDonald Sick.

He attended St. Basil’s Elementary and High School and graduated in the class of 1903. After graduation, he attended the teacher’s summer school in Dushore, conducted by Professor Kilgore.

He then began teaching at the Holmes School (in Cherry Township near the John Fitzgerald farm) in the fall of 1903. He taught one term and part of another.

In 1904, he was appointed rural delivery mail carrier for route number one in Cherry Township, a 25½ mile trip. Mr. Sick held this position for 18 years, having driven a horse sled during some of the winters.

Mr. Sick married the former Kathryn Donahue of Colley on June 9, 1908 in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mildred. They were married for 67 years.

On March 1, 1923, Mr. Sick became a stockholder of Harrington and Company, Dushore. He was assigned to bring the 200 dairies then delivering milk to the Dushore Creamery, as it was known, up to a standard so that they could pass inspection by a Newark, N.J. dairy inspector. This was necessary so that milk from Dushore would meet the requirements of the board of health of the city of  Newark.

It took several years to get the dairies inspected.  Mr. Sick got to know his patrons personally and according to those who knew him was said to be “a great judge of human nature and had infinite patience.”

During the 30 years he was associated with Harrington and Company, the firm purchased or built creameries in Rushville, LeRaysville and Benton. The number of patrons increased to 1,010 and were all under New York City and Newark inspections.

During his service with Harrington and Company, he arranged the building and installation of mechanical milk coolers which replaced springs and spring runs which could not cool milk quickly enough.

In 1946, Harrington and Company merged with the Philadelphia Dairy Products Company, but Mr. Sick stayed on the job for five more years.

Mr. Sick retired when he was 65, but has not been content to “sit on his laurels” during his “retirement.”

He has cleaned up a number of cemeteries, kept them mowed and in good condition. In addition to these jobs, he has baked tons of beans for church picnics and was an experienced wine maker.

Mr. Sick was a charter member of the Dushore Lions Club, having given it 32 years of service.

He was also a member of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce.

He was elected to the Dushore Borough Council from 1926 until 1961, having served as president from 1927 until 1956.

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn, at home; two sons, Eugene Sick of Wilkes-Barre and C. William Sick of Dushore; one daughter, Mrs. Jane Dunfee of Waverly; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Regina Tubach Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Auditorium at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Conboy officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Kathryn T. Donahue Sick, 96, of Dushore, died Wednesday morning at the Sayre House in Sayre.

She was born in Colley Twp. in Sullivan County on June 18, 1885, daughter of the late Thomas M. and Elizabeth Waples Donahue.  On June 9, 1908, she married William P. Sick; of  Dushore; in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Mildred; They were married 67 years.  William P.. Sick died Dec. 27, 1975.

Mrs. Sick was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church in Dushore and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are two sons, Eugene, of Wilkes-Barre, and C. William, of Dushore; one daughter, Mrs. Jane Dunfee, of Waverly, N.Y.; 12 grand-children, 29 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the?. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church in Dushore with the Rev. Eugene R. Carr officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Rosary will be recited by members of St. Basil’s Altar and Rosary Society at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Caroline Sick Stahl wife of the late Henry Stahl of Cherry Mills died at her home Sunday evening at the age of 79 years.
Mrs. Stahl is survived by four sisters and five brothers; Mrs. Ralph Litzelman, Mrs. John Litzelman, Mrs. Edward Weisbrod of Cherry township and Mrs. Hannah Cook of this place. Charles, Joseph and Wendell Sick of Cherry township, William Sick of New Albany and Julius J. Sick of Nordmont. Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning in the Reformed church at this place with interment in Fairview cemetery.

Rosalia Bower(s) Hugo (1848-1924) was my gr.gr  grandmother.There a few articles written about her and her parents, Frederick and Fredericka Vitus Bowers. I have a copy of an obiturary (no date) that states she is survived by one brother, Cuno Bowers and three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Sick, Mrs. Fred Schrader and Mrs. Holmes, and one half brother Charles Smith. Today I have been trying to find out what became of her siblings.
The Sick family write up on the Sullivan Co. website states that Wm. Sick married "Mary Louise Bauer Hannon "after his first wife died. William Sick is buried with his first wife. One could assume that Mary was then buried with her first husband. The 1880 census shows "Louiza Bowers" 19, living with Frederick and Fredericka Smith along with other family members. Louiza's mother did marry Frederick Smith after her husband Frederick Bower died.
On the 1880 census, my gr.gr. grandmother Rosalia Hugo, Louise's sister, is living next door. The age is correct for Louise. I'm guessing now that her name was Mary Louise and she went by Mary. I'm assumming that she married first James Hannon. who died in 1906, and then married William Sick who's wife died after her 10th child. I just "discovered" this today and have no proof but it is a lead. I Brenda

Miss Clara A. Saxer                                                                                         Daily Review, 1-31-2002
Miss Clara A. Saxer, 97, of Dushore, an esteemed Sullivan County teacher, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at the Dar-Way Nursing Home, Estella.
Miss Saxer was born Feb. 16, 1904, in Cherry Township on the family farm, a daughter of the late Fred R. and Anastasia C. Litzelman Saxer. She attended elementary school at the King School on Ringer Hill and graduated from St. Basil's High School, a member of the class of 1920. At her death, she was the oldest member of St. Basil's Alumni Association.
She continued her education at Juniata College, traveling there on the train. She graduated in 1925 with a B.S. in science. Mathematics was her main area of concentration and in later days she attended courses at Penn State and became certified to teach many other subjects. She taught chemistry, French, Latin, English and bookkeeping, but mathematics was always her preference. Miss Saxer was also fluent in speaking and reading German.
Miss Saxer taught for 44 years in Sullivan County. She began at the Cherry Township High School, and also taught at the Dushore High School, and Sullivan Highland High School, Sonestown, and retired in 1969 from the Sullivan County High School, Laporte, where she spent the last six years of her career teaching mathematics.
Miss Saxer was a lifelong member of St. Basil's Church in Dushore, and a member of the former Altar and Rosary Society and a member of the Sullivan County Teacher's Association.
Surviving are:     Ann and Sebastian Trapani and family.
Clara was predeceased by a brother, F. Ralph Saxer, on Oct. 8, 1972, and a sister, Agnes Saxer, on Sept. 11, 1971.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Funeral home, 206 Water St., Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Basil's Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Eugene R. Carr, her former pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Friends may call at the P. Dean Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
A recitation of the Rosary by members of the Catholic Women's Guild will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the funeral home.

Fred R. Saxer                                                                                      The Sullivan Review, 2-2-1950
Fred R. Saxer of Center street died Tuesday evening at his home following an illness of some time.
Mr. Saxer was born in Cherry Township, a son of the late George and Madeline Rohe Saxer.
He was united in marriage with Miss Anastasia Litzelman a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Litzelman, of Cherry Township. They settled on a farm where they resided for a number of years. Later they moved to their present home in Dushore where they have since lived.
Mr. Saxer is survived by his wife, a son Raphael Saxer, and two daughters, Miss Clara Saxer, a teacher in the Dushore Public school, and Miss Agnes Saxer at home; a sister Mrs. Richard Williams of Williamsport.

Mrs.  William P. Shoemaker, M.Jennie Rohe Shoemaker                                  The Sullivan Review, 2-24-1944
Mrs. M. Jennie Shoemaker , wife of Attorney William P. Shoemaker of Laporte, died Friday, February 18th in the Robert packer hospital at the age of 67 years.
She had been a hospital patient for four weeks.
Mrs. Shoemaker was born in Cherry Township, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rohe.
She lived a very active home life, making her own clothing, and making dresses for many others, also piecing many beautiful quilts, which are considered a work of art.
For fourteen years she was a member of the town council of Laporte borough. Following the death of her brother, William A. Rohe, about seven months ago she failed rapidly in health.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter Miss Ettie Shoemaker who is employed in the Auditor General’s Department at Harrisburg and a brother John C. Rohe who resides on the homestead in Cherry township.
Funeral services were held at the Tubach Funeral Parlor at Dushore Monday afternoon at one o’clock.
Rev. Clement B. Meyers, Pastor of the Reformed church officiated. Interment in the family plot in the Muncy cemetery.

George Streby,                                                                                    The Sullivan Review, 11-23-1921
George Streby, editor of the Gazette and Herald, died Saturday night in the packer hospital at Sayre after an illness of two weeks.
Streby contracted a severe cold, which affected his kidneys, and on Saturday, November 12, he was taken to the hospital for treatment. One week later pneumonia developed which caused his death.
Mr. Streby was born in Forks Township, January 7, 1855. In 1881 he married Mary J. Woodley, who with two daughters, Mrs. Clara Ring of Waverly and Mrs. Martha Weisbrod of Cherry and one son, George W. at home survive.
Shortly after his marriage Mr. Streby engaged in farming and school teaching in Elkland township where he remained until 1887, when he moved to Dushore and established the Sullivan Gazette which he conducted to voice the principles of the Democratic party in the county. In 1904 he purchased the Sullivan Herald of John G. Scouton, combining the two papers into the Gazette and Herald.
Mr. Streby always took an active interest in the Welfare of his home town; was a zealous worker in the Reformed church, of which he was a member, and was a kind neighbor and friend.

Mrs. June E. Christman Taylor,        Daily Review, 2-8-2004
Mrs. June E. Taylor, age 85 of 274 S. German St., Dushore, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at the Green Home in Wellsboro.
June was born in Sonestown, Pa. on April 30, 1918, one of eleven children of the late Asher and Esther Whayln Christman. She graduated from Sullivan Highland High School, a member of the class of 1936 and married Alfred G. Taylor of Dushore on November 24, 1939. Alfred predeceased her on January 26, 1996.
June served as the Sullivan County Jury Commissioner for over 50 years and served as a Director of Eighth Class Counties Jury Commissioners Association. She was the former president of the Sullivan County Democrat Women's Club and held various offices in the Sullivan County Democrat Party. She also served as the Dushore Borough Committee Woman for many years.
June was an active member of St. Basil's Catholic Church and a member the former Altar and Rosary Society. June operated the Country Store booth at both St. Basil's picnics and Harvest Bazaars for many years. She was also a former Girl Scout leader and cooked for the Sullivan County Day Care Center at the Turnpike Elementary School in Mildred.
Surviving are: Three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard A. Taylor & Carolyn D. Leljedal of New Albany, Robert G. & Linda B. Taylor of Dushore, Patrick W & Lorrie Taylor of Dushore; Two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia T. (Trish) & Donald E. Knowlton of Wellsboro, Roberta M. (Robin) & Mark A. Dieffenbach of Wellsboro; Brother-in-law, William C. Taylor of Lancasterl; Sisters-in-law, Jane Taylor of Boca Raton, Fla., Cordelia Sammon of Lancaster, Patricia Murphy of Lancaster, Alice Taylor of Upland, CA, Mary Taylor of Lancaster, Alice Cristman of CA; Two Special Friends, Helen Evangelisti and Rita Rohe of Dushore; Fifteen grandchildren, Twelve great grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant son, Wayne Taylor and by her ten brothers and sisters.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Basil's Church, Dushore, with the Rev. David R. Betts, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, on Monday, Feb. 9, from 2:00 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The Catholic Women's Guild will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon at the funeral home.

Chad Christopher Taylor, age 36, of Dushore (Cherry Township), Pa., passed away on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1971, in Towanda, Pa., a son of Robert Gregory and Linda (Bennett) Taylor. Chad was a 1990 graduate of Sullivan County High School, and also a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology. He was employed at the Benton Foundry as an assistant supervisor in the Melt Department. Chad was a member of St. Basil's Church, in Dushore. He enjoyed hunting, cars and NASCAR and found pleasure in time spent with his family and friends. He is survived by his parents: Robert G. and Linda Taylor of Dushore; by his maternal grandfather: Eugene Bennett of Glade Springs, Va.; by three children: Logan, McKenna and Shannon Taylor of Dushore; by a sister: Michele Myers of Jersey Shore, Pa.; by two brothers: Michael Taylor of Millerstown, Pa., and Gregory Taylor of Canton, Pa.; and by seven nieces and nephews. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Basil's Catholic Church. Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Russell P. Martha M. TEETER, 64, Overton resident, died Saturday morning at her home following a short illness.
She was born in Sonestown, Oct. 12, 1917, daughter of the late Edwin and Amanda C. RADER SNYDER.
At the age of 12 she moved to Dushore and later to Overton.
She was an employee of the Herman Rynveld Son's Corp., New Albany, for over 20 years.
Her husband Lyle TEETER, died in 1978.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur W. SICK, Jr., and Edwin J. SICK, both of Dushore; a daughter, Mrs Nancy BARTON of New Albany; a brother, Martin SNYDER of Lyle, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs Jennie WAGNER of Hugesville and Mrs. Harriet SHARROW of Normont; five grandchildren; numerous neices and nephews.
The funeral service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer funeral Home, 206 Water Street, Dushore with the Rev. Phillip SABAS, pastor of the St. Paul's Untied Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be in the Warburton Hill cemetery in Overton.

Anthony (Tony) Trasco, 70, of Dushore, PA died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Tony was born in Mildred on Dec. 9, 1934, a son of the late Anna Trasco of Dushore. He married the former Mary Jane Litzelman of Dushore on Dec. 28, 1957. Tony served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was employed in union construction most of his life and was a member of Labor’s Local # 215, Wilkes-Barre. Tony also served as an elected Cherry Township Supervisor. He was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, and the AJ Bird Memorial VFW Post #384, New Albany. Surviving are his spouse, Mary Jane, at home; sons, Robert Trasco, Sugar Run, Joe Trasco, Dushore, Steven Trasco, Bedford, IN; daughters and son-in-law, Vicki and Jerry Krzan Dushore, Shari Yarnall, Dushore, brother and sister-in-law, William and Jane Trasco, Monroeton; mother-in-law, Loretta Litzelman , Dushore; nephews, Michael Trasco, William Trasco and a niece Linda Trasco; several brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. Elmer Guy Traver, age 39 of Dushore RD 1 died Sunday morning at his home following a lingering illness.

Mr. Traver was born Sept. 14, 1929 at Beaumont, Wyoming Co., Penna., and had spent most of his lifetime in the Sullivan County area. He was the son of Ralph Traver and the late Helen May Traver.

He was a member of  Paul’s United Methodist Church at Dushore. He attended the Cherry Township public school and was a 1948 graduate of Dushore High School. He had formerly been employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a track man at Auburn. N.Y., and was an employee of the Meehan Co. in Dushore until illness forced his retirement.

Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Marie Manahan Traver; two sons, David Earl, aged 16, and Duane Edward, aged 4, both at home; his father, Ralph Traver, at home; three sisters, Mrs.Samuel (Alice) Fulmer of District Heights, Md,, Mrs. Robert (Norma) Shaffer of Jamaica Plains, Mass., and Mrs. Joseph (Marjorie) Huray of Johnson City, N.Y.; several cousins, nieces and nephews and two uncles.

Funeral services will beheld Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Russell P. Mc Henry Funeral Home in Dushore. Interment will be in the Fairview cemetery at Dushore.

Emil F. Tubach                                                                                                The Sullivan Review, 7-12-1922
Emil F. Tubach died suddenly on Tuesday morning at his home on German street, of heart failure.
Monday, he attended to his duties at the Tubach furniture store and seemed to be in his usual health. About three o’clock in the morning his wife noticed his heavy breathing and called him. Receiving no answer she aroused Dorson Sick who was boarding with them and sent for a physician, but Mr. Tubach had passed away before the doctor arrived.
Mr. Tubach was born in Dushore, sixty years ago, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip Tubach. In the year of 1875 Philip Tubach, together with his sons, Philip, Charles and Emil, formed a partnership and commenced the Tubach furniture business in the building now occupied by P. Daly.
During the summer of 1876 they built the building now occupied by A.L. Tubach and enlarged their business, combining undertaking with the furniture business.
After the death of Philip Tubach Sr. E.F. Tubach took charge of the business and later sold out. For about ten years he lived in Bernice working in the carpenter shop of the Connell Coal Co.
About three years ago he returned to this place and has since been engaged with his nephew as repairman in the A.L. Tubach furniture store.
Mr. Tubach was of an inventive turn of mind and succeeding in securing patents on several devices.
The wire hoods used universally on all rough boxes is one of his inventions. He invented the lowering device used by most undertakers but by some slip while he was in Washington trying to get it patented it was taken from him.
A few years ago he invented a mine car door and had it patented. This is now being placed on the market by Tubach & Tubach. This invention is being pushed by the firm and some big repeat orders have been received.
He leaves a wife and one daughter Mrs. Etta Hatton, and one adopted daughter.
Funeral services will e held on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 in the Reformed church with interment in Bahr Hill cemetery.

Gordon P. Tubach                                                                                              The Sullivan Review, 5-31-2001
Gordon P. Tubach, 92, one of Dushore's most distinguished citizens, died on May 23, 2001, at The Highlands in Laporte.
Born Philip Gordon Tubach on January 16, 1909, in Colley, he was the eldest child of William P. and Edith Weaver Tubach.
He received his early education in the Colley schools and was valedictorian of the fist graduation class in the new St. Basil's High School building, Dushore, in 1927.
During high school he boarded and worked in Dushore for Tubach's Furniture Factory and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and afterwards held positions in Scranton, New Jersey and California.
After returning to Pennsylvania, he married the former Marian E. Sick of Mildred in 1931. He began working for the Prudential Insurance Co. as an agent in Bradford and Sullivan counties shortly afterwards and retired from that company in 1969 after 37 years of service. His insurance career was interrupted when he became the first Sullivan County father to be drafted to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. During his two year tour as an Army infantryman in Virginia, Maryland and Texas, his wife, Marian, took over his insurance responsibilities to secure his position for his return.
Always very active in community affairs, Gordon was mayor of Dushore for 32 years, a charter member of the Dushore Lions Club, life member of the American Legion post No. 996, and one of the founding fathers of the Dushore Fire Company and Little League. He served on the Sullivan County Development Committee, which was instrumental in bringing both the Sull-Craft Manufacturing and Endicott Johnson Shoe factories to the county. He was also a member of the Dushore Borough Council and the Centennial Committee and was on the boards of the Dushore Water Co. and the First National Bank.
A devoted member of the St. Basil's Church, he was very active in its Holy Name Society and a chairman on its July 4 picnic committee for many years. Gordon was also an avid sportsman, particularly enjoying fishing, hunting and golf, and was a member of the Wolfe Island Club.
He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Marian, in 1973; his second wife, Pauline McGee Hassen; brothers Raymond and Earl; and sister, Leona (Francis) Kaminsky.
Survivors include sons Wayne of Laporte, Paul of Glen Allen, VA; daughters Sister Jeanne, IHM,of Cresco, Lucille Christini of Towanda, and Mary Frances Cummiskey of Endicott, NY; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on May 26, from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Frances of Assisi Catholic Church, Mildred, with the Rev. Michael B.Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment followed in St. Basil's Cemetery, Dushore.

Mrs. Regina Ella Tubach Homer                                                                      Wyalusing Rocket,  10-3-2002
Mrs. Regina Ella Tubach Homer, age 85, well-respected funeral director for 60 years, of Dushore, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002Oct. 2, 2002.
Regina was born on March 2, 1917, daughter of the late Arthur Leo and Marcella Brogan Tubach of Dushore. She graduated from St. Basil’s High School, a member of the Class of 1933. She began working by teaching ballroom and tap dancing for 50 cents an hour at St. Basil’s Hall. In 1935, she and her mother, her brother, Cyril and friend, Arlene North traveled to California by bus. In California she attended Pasadena Junior College and graduated from the Pasadena Beauty School where she was a teacher and also graduated from Siegelman’s Make-up Studio in Hollywood. In 1939, her parents spent the winter in California where they purchased a beauty college in Los Angeles, where Regina taught and also was the manager.
After the beauty school was sold in 1941, Regina returned home in May, and in September entered Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. She graduated in 1942 and served her year’s apprenticeship under her father. She received her Pennsylvania Funeral Director’s License in 1943. Regina managed the funeral business, the furniture store and rural bottled gas service for her father. She expanded and modernized the facilities in 1954. She succeeded to the ownership of the family funeral home in 1960. Regina operated the funeral home with the help of the late Paul North and the late Tony Recupero until her son Dean, who served his apprenticeship with her, was licensed in 1972. Dean succeeded to ownership in 1979. She was actively engaged in the business until her death.
Regina was an avid fisher woman and fished at her ponds and other locations every chance she had. She loved to listen to other fishermen tell tall tales of luck from casting and trolling from a boat, while she (using a bobber from shore) almost always came home with a full creel, which she immediately cleaned, scaled and prepared for freezing. She was also very accomplished at needlepoint. She completed several large pieces until her eyesight prevented her from discerning the very fine color changes in the fabrics.
Regina was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church in Dushore and a member of its former Altar and Rosary Society. She was a past president and member of Tri-County Funeral Directors Association and a member of P.F.D.A. and N.F.D.A. Regina also served on the Dushore Sewer Authority for five years from its inception.
She cherished her membership in the Dushore Music Club and friendships made there. She hosted the group once a year at her home.
Regina was well known for her stylish attire and hat when at work and at mass.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, P. Dean and A. Kay Welles Homer, Dushore; three grandsons, J. Jeffrey Homer, Dushore, Nicholas C. Homer, Baltimore, MD, J. Bradford W. Homer, Dushore; one granddaughter, Amelia Regina Homer, Dushore, and several very loved cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother, Cyril on Nov. 28, 1941.
Funeral services will be held from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Eugene R. Carr, her former pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, Oct. 6 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Mary Regina Tubach                                                                               The Sullivan Review, 5-4-2000
Mary Regina Tubach Kirsch, 97, of Palm Desert, CA, died April 27, 2000, in Palm Desert.
She was born in Colley, PA, July 30, 1902, a daughter of Phillip A. and Adeline Elizabeth Saxe Tubach.
Her father died in a fall from the roof of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Cummiskey (Wilmot Township). Her mother later married Phillip Steafather of Dushore, and moved to Califorina in 1909 with children Walter, Regina and Caroline.
Mary Regina married John F. Kirsch of Pineview, MN in 1919. They resided in Anaheim, CA, many years before retiring to Palm Desert. Mr. Kirsch died in 1990.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Louis Catholic Church.
Surviving are three children, a son, John F. Kirsch of Sequin, WA two daughters, Patricia Roman, of Cathedral City, CA; and Betty Geotz of Beaumont, TX; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a niece Regina Tubach Homer of Dushore; and nephew, Gordon Tubach of Laporte.
She was predeceased by brothers William, Arthur L. and Walter S.; and a sister Caroline Nellesen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 2 at St. Louis Catholic Church. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Orange County, CA.

Wayne Tubach, age 71, of Laporte, PA passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Highlands Care Center.

Wayne was born on February 3, 1934 son of the late Gordon P. and Marian Elizabeth Sick Tubach of Dushore, PA. He graduated from St. Basil’s High School, a member of the class of 1951, and later from King’s College class of 1955. He served in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict. He married the former Mary Irene Holcombe of Dushore on September 14, 1957. Wayne worked for Moore Business Forms as a regional sales manager, for 35 years before retiring and moving to Laporte.

Wayne was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Laporte, PA. He was also a member of Lake Mokoma Association, the Eagles Mere Country Club, and the Eagles Mere/Laporte Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Friday, April 8, 2005 at St. Basil’s Church in Dushore, PA at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Mountain Ash Cemetery, Laporte, PA.

The family will provide the flowers and direct Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 63 N. Franklin Street Wilkes-Barre, PA 18071 or to the Laporte Volunteer Fire Co., PO Box 31 Laporte, PA 18626.

I'm descended from the oldest child of Evert and Amy Porter Shadduck and from the oldest child of Pierson and Sophi Mott Holcomb of LeRoy whose son Vell Holcombe of Dushore married a Sick descendant. Their daughter, Pauline Holcombe collected genealogical information about her mother's family that is included in a book that her nieces put together from her information, called "Aunt Paulie's Book". I've found the Sick information you've included on the site interesting as it relates to what is included in her book.
I noticed somewhere on the site that you are in Memphis. My uncle pastored a church in Memphis for years, he's now retired. I found it interesting that both your path and his went thru Binghamton NY. You two would probably have a good time remembering Sullivan Co and Broome Co.

Mrs. Sarah Sick died Friday morning at her home in Cherry township, near Dushore following an illness of a few days at the age of 74 years.
Mrs. Sick was born in Cherry township, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John McDonald, who came to America from Dublin, Ireland, in 1850. Mrs. Sick before her marriage taught several successful terms of school in the county.
She was united in marriage to Wendell Sick in 1873, and to this union were born five children: John C. of Cherry township; Francis J. of Mildred, Jennie,
now Sister M. Kostka, stationed at Olyphant, Pa., William P, and Leo J. Sick of Dushore. Also one sister, Mrs. Edward Donegan of Sayre and one brother Francis McDonald of Elmira.
Funeral service was held Monday morning in St. Basil's church and was largely attended. Burial was made in the family plot in adjoining cemetery.Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. N.

Sally had tight dark curls, was a small woman who was nice to children.  She and Wendell were in love and wanted to get married but her parents objected to the young shoemaker of “German” extraction.  She was 22 and he was 24 when they went to Overton where the priest said he would marry them.  Her mother went in the church, up the aisle, and tried to take her out by the hair of her head.  The priest said they were already married.

Sarah’s mother, Mrs. McDonald went home and had nothing to do with Sally until the first child was born.

At this time, Mrs. McDonald walked from just north of Ringdale to Overton to her daughters home, a distance of 10 to 15 miles or more.  Mrs. McDonald was carrying a high chair as a gift.

McDonald line:  John and Mary Gainer McDonald were from Dublin, Ireland.  John emigrated to the U.S. in 1846 and his wife and five children in 1850.  During Mary’s trip the vessel was blown back by storms six times. One son (William Patrick?) died at sea on the last attempt and was buried in Liverpool, England.  On the seventh attempt, they were successful.  John and Mary McDonald lived on a farm on the LaPorte road in Cherry, south of Dushore or what is now Rt. 220.  John was a trailor by trade and practiced his trade as well as farming.    Children:

1. William Patrick McDonald name?          died at sea, buried in Liverpool, England

2. Ellen McDonald                                   married ……..Porter, lived in Williamsport, PA

3. Francis McDonald                               married Anne Jordon, lived in Cherry Mills

4. John McDonald                                   lived in Dubois, PA

5. Catherine born 1846 or 1848               married John Cahill in late 1860, lived in Bernice, PA,

They had 7 children:  5 who lived, she was a school teacher died of an accident Feb. 1, 1894 at 47 yrs. 6 mos. 19 days.

However, death record of May 18, 1894, age is 46 yrs.

Duration of illness: 1 hour, .Cause of death: accident.

Above all born in Ireland, and came here with their mother.

6. Sarah (Sally) McDonald                       born 1851, married Wendell Sick Feb. 14, 1873, Valentines Day, had 5 children.

7. Mary McDonald                                   married Donegan,

at her son’s at 119 Cliff Street, Sayre, PA

(parents: Patrick McDonald and Mary Ganon?)

                                                            Age 74 yrs. 2 months, 28 days.  Widow of Alphonse Donegan,

Doesn’t agree with tomstones.

Not:

Peter McDonald              born. 1851 married Rosa Fitzgerald in 1894, farmed in Cherry no children.

 

Catherine McDonald Cahill accident was the result of her being kicked by a cow while she was trying to get milk.

After this when Sally had to milk a cow, she started to said Hail Mary’s in a loud voice and would wind down as she finished.  Apparently Wendell (her husband) couldn’t get the cow to give him any milk, but Sarah could.

Gene and I would sit on the fence and giggle when Sarah started her prayers until Sarah either insisted they hush or sent them away.  She did not want them to scare the cow.

Other anecdotal info includes  Mary Gainer McDonald walking twice a year from Cherry Township through the woods with a basket of whatever the farm had at the time to visit her daughter, Ellen Porter in Williamsport.  The trip took 24 hours.

She would stay a couple weeks and then walk back home.

Ellen PORTER in her older years became addicted to paregoric along with alcohol.  Some time in the late 50s or early 60s she was staying with my grandparents; William P. and Katie Sick in Dushore.  Katie was beside herself trying to find people to go uptown to buy the paregoric since it’s purchase was restricted.  I do not know when she died, but it wasn’t too long afterwards.

Mary also reportedly did not tolerate any card playing or drinking in her own home.

William Patrick Sick always told me he was named after the McDonald youngster that died at sea and was buried in Liverpool.  The “Patrick” part sounds reasonable since his father’s family was German.  His mother would dress William P. in dresses and in rather long curls for a boy until Wendell put his foot down while watching him play.

Any other anecdotal from Mary Kay:  Sarah McDonald Sick was very old and ill, and at that time very deaf, pointing to a picture on the wall until finally someone took it down, opened the back and in it were individual $100 bank checks for each of her adult children.  It’s one Mary heard over the years from her mother as she would describe Sarah keeping her coin money earned from selling the farm’s produce under the oilcloth kitchen tablecloth.  Mary’s mother said that Sarah would push some coins towards Wendell telling him that was the day’s earnings, while she kept a little for herself under the tablecloth and wink at Mary’s mother.  On occasions, Katie would share this with the children and tell them not to mention it to “Will” as apparently she called Wendell as did Sr. Kostka.

His great grandfather was John Cahill born in Ireland 1833 or 1835, married Catherine McDonald in the late 1860s at St.Basil’s, Dushore.  John also had a brother Patrick Cahill. 

Jerry writes John's wife Catherine had a sister Sally who married a Sick,

a sister Mary who married a Donough,                               

another sister who married a Kelly, all from the Dushore area. 

There was also at least one brother, a Frank McDonald. 

Some of these relations supposedly lived in the Williamsport or Dubois area of PA.

Patrick Donegan                                                                     The Sullivan Gazette  July 16, 1891
Patrick Donegan of this place died Saturday morning at the age of 79 years. Mr. Donegan settled in Cherry Township in July 1854.
He leaves three children: E.J. Donegan, of Cherry; Mrs. Joseph Middendorf, of Dushore, and Mrs. Guyrie, of Long Valley, Bradford County.
The remains were interred at the Catholic Cemetery Monday.

I have gone through my Streby History with a fine-tooth comb and only found a reference to John & Mary Gainer McDonald
relative to their daughter, Sarah, on her marriage to
Wendell Sick. No mention of other children. On
various census, I have found only Sarah and Mary.
Elsewhere, I have found Catherine who married John Cahill and Francis and Anna Jordan McDonald. Haven't been able to identify or locate just where son John went. Have found nothing about a son Patrick except in your
family pages. Will look more in the Reynoldsville-Clearfield areas since it looks like that's where Patrick went after he left home at age 15, after serving as a mail carrier in Sullivan Co. at age 13. That seems peculiar, but funnier things have happened in history. Family lore has members going "out west" to the Dubois, PA area. Will let you know when & if I find anything.

John Cahill died at his home at Murray's Mines June 27, aged 69 years.
The cause of death was consumption.
Deceased was born in Ireland and came to this country while still a young man, and had for years been a well known resident of Bernice and vicinity.
He is survived by three sons and three daughters.
His funeral and interment was at St. Basil's in this place on Monday June 30, and was very largely attended, the funeral procession being one of the longest that has come to town for some time.

Mr. Cahill was well known in this locality, having spent his early manhood in Bernice and later moving to Murraytown where he spent many years in the employ of the Murray Mines, before moving to Athens where he has recently made his home.
He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Henry Palmer of Lopez; Mrs. Francis Murphy, Athens; Mrs. Paul Coveney of Athens; four sons, Thomas Cahill, Lopez; John Cahill, Washington, D.C.; Charles Cahill, Athens; Francis Cahill, Bellaire, Ohio; one brother, James Cahill, Sayre; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Fell and Mrs. William Fitzharris, of Sayre; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Church, Athens, Rev. Thomas P. Durkin, officiated.
Interment in the family plot in St. Francis cemetery at Mildred.

That was a interesting contact you had with Joanne Perrault. I met her mother Genevieve Nailen last year when Joe Rouss was so sick. I wrote her a short E-mail and she wrote back that Abigail (Jordan) McDonald died during
child birth or right after the baby was born in 1891. The baby was Alice (Dorner) and I have a date for her birth as April 14, 1891.
You gave me a guesstimate date of between March 4, 1892 and 1899 for Abigail's death. So I will look in old Sullivan Reviews for her death around April 14, 1891. If I don't find that, I will look around March 4, 1892. She mentioned that Abigail and Michael lost a 16 year old daughter, Bridget, and a 7 year old, Annie, to Scarlet fever. I have
some papers on these deaths but I need to find them. I never new which Michael McDonald they belonged to.

we are all delighted to find out so much about the family. my mother , genevieve nailen, would have been the one who met Bart Cavanaugh at joe rouss place. i just visited his sister mary last week with mother in waverly. she is in the tioga nursing home- mentally fine but needing assisted living.
my mother as a child stayed with mary and john cook and their children, florence and mary (cook) litzelman. she also said uncle tom jordan lived with them. i have a picture of all of them at the farm in dushore. we have no pictures of abigail and michael mcdonald but we do have one of the children. i don't think i've ever seen any other of jordans. abigail died in childbirth or shortly after in 1891 when my grandmother,margaret, was 14. she was the oldest surviving girl and raised the new baby,alice(dorner) and the rest of the family.
she said her mother died of a broken heart because she had sent her two daughters, bridget aged 16 and annie age 7, to help her sister(which one?). they both died of scarlet fever while they were there.
i will try to organize as much info and pictures as possible to bring to the reunion as i can. i am barely computer literate but enjoy email! i am a semi-retired nurse, age 61, 6 children and 6 grandchildren. i have a sister in binghamton, n.y., a sister in canisteo, n.y. and a brother in ogden, utah. hopefully my sisters will go to the reunion too.     Joanne

Looking for Ellen, Francis J., John, and Mary, sibs of Sarah and Catherine, and children of John & Mary. John Sr. was a tailor and his wife taught school in Dublin. John came to Sullivan Co. about 1846 and bought land to farm. His wife and 5 children followed in 1850 with one child dying at sea. From the Reynoldsville census info from Mary Scott and from the obit of Sarah McDonald Sick, it looks as though J.S. McDonald and Ella McDonald who attended Sarah's funeral, are the children of Patrick & Mary Wilhelm McDonald.

The J.JH (sic) McDonald who attended could be the John Jewel McDonald, son of John S. & Myrtle Jewel McDonald who are written up in a Reynoldsville obit and are all listed in the inscription book of St. Mary's cemetery, Reynoldsville, PA. John S. McDonald also appears to be a son of Patrick.

I obtained a death certificate from Durango, CO on a John L. McDonald, died 2/13/1924 at age about 82, but listed as born in Canada. Married, but no wife's name; no info about parents. Buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Durango. Mary Scott you probably have better info about the John you are looking for than what I was able to obtain.

Able to confirm that Mary McDonald, daughter of John & Mary Gainer McDonald, did marry Edward Donegan. Confirmed via a death certificate of their son, Alphonse Edward Donegan, d. 2/19/1924 Sayre, PA.

Still looking for a John McDonald, brother of Sarah, if one ever existed.

For anyone who is interested, in 1985 I received two genealogies from descendants of the Steuben County, NY Sick families. James B. DeWolfe of Marshall, MI whose gggrandfather was Franz Sick, b. 1815 in the Ottweiler area of Germany, emigrated betweem 1840 - 1845, settling in Wayland, NY. Mr. DeWolfe referred me to an Elva W. Kluener of Cincinnati, OH. She wrote that there were 4 Sick families who emigrated in 1845: Philip 1,2,3 and Johan Jacob who were from Hangard and Ottweiler, Germany, which she said is north of Saarbrucken. They settled in Steuben County. Neither Mr. DeWolfe nor Mrs. Kluener were aware of any Sicks in Sullivan County, and with the info I had, they could not make a connection at that time and I could not either.

I am a descendant of Patrick and Catherine (Burns) McDonald, from Sullivan County.
On the John and Mary Gainer McDonald, they did have a son Patrick.

There is a nice biographical write-up but it is not in the Streby History. It is is a large biographical book covering, I believe, Clearfield, Jefferson, Center and Elk County, Pa. Patrick was married to Mary Wilhelm from Elk County, Pa.
I had, at one time a copy of this write-up but apparently it has been misplaced. It is a very good write-up you should have Mary since you are researching this family. I do not know where you live but I first picked it up in the New Castle, Pa. library and my library here in Warren may have a copy. I will check and let you know. I also hope to get to the New Castle
library soon and if my library does not have it, I will pick it up in New Castle when I go and make you a copy.
Patrick moved to Reynoldsville, Jefferson County, Pa. and ran a lumber business. The following is what I have from census records on this family from Reynoldsville, Jefferson County, Pa. (By the way, that is the town I grew up in).

I have no idea what happened to Willie. I also had copies of the obits for the son Lawrence and I believe George at one time and probably still do but I have so many binders with papers in them I will have to do a search and see if I can find them for you. If I find anything else on this family I will forward it to you. I had separated them from my family papers for less confusion.
I have always felt that John was probably a brother to my Patrick because they both came over from Ireland, settled in Sullivan County, and Patrick's son William went to Reynoldsville. William's daughter Anna was my grandmother. Also, my family has the names, John, Francis, George, Mary, Lawrence, Terrance and Ellen.
I will research the papers I have here and see what else I may have that might help you out. Mary

Here is the obituary for Lawrence McDonald, son of Patrick and Mary Wilhelm McDonald.
March 29, 1962 - Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, Pa. Newspaper
A funeral Mass will be sung tomorrow morning in Reynoldsville for Lawrence McDonald of Reynoldsvile, who died in his home Thursday of a coronary embolism. Mr. McDonald, 77, was found dead in his home Thursday afternoon.
He was born July 17, 1884, in Reynoldsville, a son of Patrick and Mary Wilhelm McDonald. A retired railroader, he lived his entire life in the Reynoldsville area. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church there.
Surviving are a brother, Terrence, of Reynoldsville, and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Harris, of Reynoldsville R.D. 2, and Mrs. Ernest Miller, of East Lake, O.
The funeral Mass will be sung in St. Marys Church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. The Reverend Raymond Dugan will be the celebrant and interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends are being received in the Ober Funeral
Home in Reynoldsville.
I also have some pages from the cemetery inscription books from Jefferson County. Buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winslow Twp., Reynoldsville are the following:

Thanks so much for the copies of the Reynoldsville Borough census for 1880 & 1890 for George McDonald & Patrick McDonald. I found the census on the Jefferson Co genweb site but could not read it.
The info on Patrick & Catherine McDonald & John & Mary McDonald was taken from the 1850 & 1860 census from Sullivan Co. When comparing the two, it does look like Patrick and John could have been brothers. Interestingly, none of Patrick's children were born in Ireland, while John & Mary had 5 of theirs born in Ireland. If one of Patrick's children were born in Canada & the next in New York, do you think he may have worked in lumbering or on the canals for money to buy land in Sullivan Co.? In the 1850 census for Sullivan Co. his occupation is "shoemaker". I wonder where he was in 1840?
The McDonald obituaries are much appreciated. I was quite excited to read about J. Jewel McDonald of Blawnox because there were a # of McDonalds at the funeral of Sally McDonald Sick, my greatgrandmother from Blawnox & Pittsburgh. But I haven't been able to make a connection.
I looked for more info about McDonalds in Bradford County, and found William & Ellen McDonald in the 1880 census of the Village of Carbon Run, Barclay Township. You may already have this info. In the "Romance of Barclay", a priest named Rev. Patrick Toner was the pastor in Towanda and had the church built in Barclay. Perhaps your Ellen Toner was a relative???
I was trying to see if either Patrick or John (sons of John & Mary) were involved in any mining in Sullivan Co or the Barclay area in Bradford Co but came up empty. I am curious about the John L. McDonald (buried in Durango Co. Colorado) you mentioned in your family history on the Sullivan Co website. I still haven't found out what happened to John & Mary's son John after he left Sullivan Co. although family history says he went west also---but out west in PA or out west as in Colorado? PATRICK MCDONALD is engaged in the lumber business in Reynoldsville, Jefferson county. His career well exempifies the saying that "merit always commands its reward." Making the most of his opportunities through life, he has overcome many obstacles in his path, and has steadily advanced on the high road to success. His is now numbered among the most enterprising and progressive business men of his adopted city, and is well worthy of representation in this volume.

Mr. McDonald was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1848, and is a son of John and Mary (Gaynor) McDonald, who were natives of the Emerald Isle, whence they came to America in 1856. For several years they resided in New York, and then removed to Sullivan County, Penn., where the father worked at the tailor's trade, which he had learned in his native land. He also carried on agricultural pursuits, and developed a farm, to the further cultivation of which he was directing his energies at the time of his death, in 1890. His wife passed away the year previous.

Patrick McDonald was the fifth child in their family. His educational opportunities were limited to the privileges afforded by the district schools of Sullivan County, Penna. At the early age of thirteen years he left the parental roof to make his own way in the world, and has since been dependent entirely upon his own efforts; so that whatever success he has achieved is justly merited. He was first employed as a mail carrier, and followed that pursuit for eighteen months, after which he secured work in the lumber woods of Clearfield County. He was industrious and energetic, and after four years was enabled to embark in lumbering on his own account, since which time he has successfully followed that calling, continually adding to the competence which is the merited reward of earnest labor. For twenty-four years he has been associated in business with Hon. A. C. Hopkins, member of Congress from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.

In June, 1873, Mr. McDonald was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Wilhelm, of St. Mary's, Elk Co., Penn., and their union has been blessed with nine children, eight of whom are still living, namely; John, Francis, George, Mary, Thomas, Brady, Terrence and Ellen. Mr. McDonald and his family are members of Roman Catholic Church, and in politics he is a stanch Democrat, warmly advocating the free coinage of silver. He occupies a prominent position in business circles, and his life record is in many respects worthy of

This weekend I had an opportunity to review the information from the great web site you developed. I have three items that I would like to contribute to the web site, if possible. A fourth item, concerning Miles McDonald
and the role our ancestors played in the Civil War will come next.
Background of My Find:
My company has a New York operation that employees over 300 people in the upstate New York areas of
Owego, Johnson City, Endicott and Corning in software development. It is great for me because it is a short trip down to Sullivan County to see my relatives whenever I fly up to conduct business. In the late 80's, while
on a business trip to the area, I found an old bookstore. While spending time looking through their collection, I found the "History of Sullivan
County" by Thomas J. Ingram. Imagine my further surprise when I found the biography of my great,great grandfather George McDonald, son of Patrick McDonald and
Catherine Burns McDonald. Also in the book were biographies of Ambrose Farrell (related to me through my great-great grandmother Mary Alice Farrell) and Owen Sweeney (also related through the McDonald side of the
family . Of course, I had to purchase the book even with its hefty $100 price tag. It was a once in a lifetime find. I will post these three important biographies on the Bio section of thispage for all to see.  Joanne McDonald

Joanne McDonald posted, 3-13-2000        Miles McDonald joined the 5th Pennsylvania Volunteers
Infantry Regiment. The company formed in Sullivan County and surrounding counties were part of this Regiment. Miles was 19 when he volunteered and enlisted for a 3 year term.
Papers describe him as 5'7" grey eyes and light hair. He started as a private and was later listed as a corporal. He enlisted in 1861 and saw action at Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Brandy Station. He was wounded in 1861 at the Battle of Bull Run. Papers indicate that he was discharged for desertion in 1863. It appeared that he was trying to go home for some reason and they picked him up in Williamsport and took him back to his regiment
We know that his father (Patrick) died in 1865 . I don't know if someone in the family died or if he had seen too much carnage or what the story was. I know it was not
uncommon in those days for men to just walk away from the battles and return home. We can't imagine what he saw and what he endured. I know at the 1st Battle of Bull Run, ladies and gentlemen from Washington rode out in their carriages and packed picnic lunches expecting to witness
the first and only battle of the war and see the Confederate forces soundly beaten. Even the troops were naïve and ill prepared for the horrors of war and the carnage. At the end of the day, 900 men lay dead, 1229
missing, and 2593 wounded.
Miles has always fascinated me. He is also listed
in the "History of Sullivan County" as one of the "boys in blue" who volunteered to fight for the preservation of the Union.
We don't know right now where Miles is buried, most likely in Leadville, Colorado, where he moved to become a hotel keeper. Mary Scott has a a patent application to mine gold for Miles for Aug. 1895.

Mary also reports that several of his relatives are buried at Greemount, Durango, Co. in the same mortuary plot:

with a George S.

Mary also has the Marriage Record for Miles to Sarah E. Hensley in Alma, Colorado dated August 30, 1876.

John McDonald The Sullivan Review September 30, 1936
John McDonald, died in the Wilkes-Barre hospital, Monday, the result of an accident which he suffered while working in the mines about a week ago.
he was 58 years of age and until a few years ago was a resident of Cherry township.
He is survived by his wife, four daughters, and four sons, one sister, Mrs. John Fitzgerald to Towanda and one brother Patrick McDonald of Scranton.
Funeral service will be held in Wilkes-Barre Friday morning with interment in the family plot in St. Basil's cemetery

John McDonald                The Sullivan Review October 7, 1936
Many relatives and friends attended the funeral of John McDonald which took place Friday morning at 9 o'clock from the family home, 660 Warren Avenue, Kingston, thence to St. Ignatius' Church, Kingston, where a solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. Charles McElwee was celebrant of the mass, Rev. W. F. Sweeney was deacon, and Rev. M. J. Maher was sub-deacon. Rev. William Mulligan was master of ceremonies. Rev. Eugene Caulfield, pastor of St. Ignatius' Church, was seated in the sanctuary. John Bergen of Wilkes-Barre, the soloist, sang "Ave Maria" at the offertory and "Mother, At Thy Feet I'm Kneeling" as the procession was leaving the church. The organist was Miss Elizabeth Lavis. There were numerous floral tributes. Interment was in St. Basil's Cemetery at Dushore. The pall bearers were John Shovlin, Joseph Burns, John Mielco, Eugene Farrell, Joseph Thall, William Lamoreaux, Arthur McMahon and Robert Callahan.

William E. McDonald                 The Sullivan Review August 31, 1944
William E. McDonald died at his home in Coveytown, Cherry township Friday afternoon, August 25th at the age of 54. He had been ill for some time. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, a prosperous farmer who will be missed by his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Anna K. McDonald; his mother, Mrs. Alice McDonald; two sisters, Miss Betty McDonald of Dushore and Mrs. James Fauls of Ithaca, NY; three brothers, Patrick McDonald of Mildred, Joseph and George McDonald of Endicott.
The funeral service was held from the home Monday morning at 10 o'clock with mass at St. Basil's church at 10:30. Burial in St. Basil's cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Francis and Charles McMahon, Edward Silverstrim, Ivan Cullen, Joseph Marshall, Matthew Thall.

On Feb. 8, 2007, Minerva Mae (nee Allen) Sick, beloved wife of Walter G. Sick Sr., passed away.
She was the mother of Richard MacPhee and his wife, Gloria, Walter G. Sick Jr. and his wife, Michele, and Melanie Hughes and Allen Sick; grandmother of Timothy and his wife, Carrie, Brett, David, and Kyle Hughes and Caitlin Sick; and great-grandmother of Colin Hughes.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, at the Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road (at Franklin Blvd.), Reisterstown, Md.       A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m.
