A young German, John ROHA, in the employ of S. H. TREON, Esq., of this place, while chopping in the woods, on Friday last, met with an accident which caused his death on the following day. ROHA, with several others, were engaged in chopping and after a tree had been felled, he mounted the log for the purpose of cutting it in two. The end of the log on which he stood projected over another, and when he had chopped it off, it fell nearly to the ground, hanging by some small slivers. In attempting to cut off the slivers, it suddenly became separated and being on a side hill, rolled down catching him between that and another log. The Rev. James J. Ruddick    Died 3-18-2007 age 83

The Rev. James J. Ruddick, professor emeritus at Canisius College and a counselor and spiritual director to fellow priests and women religious, died Sunday, March 18, 2007; he was 83.
The son of Mary Cordelia Litzelman and James H. Ruddick, he is survived by three sisters, Helen (Arnold) Bentley in Elmira, Madeline Dailey in Bethlehem and Sister Theresa Rutty and one brother, John (Joyce) in Wilmington.
His mother grew up on the Litzelman homestead at the top of Gainer Hill. Fr. Jim spoke of many happy visits with his family to the farm and never failed when in the area to reminisce at that site.
Father Jim celebrated his first mass in the area at St. Basil’s Church in June 1955 and again on July 17, 2005 as part of his 50th anniversary celebration as a Jesuit priest. He made several visits to the area in conjunction with family and related genealogy gatherings at the Forksville Fairgrounds. His contributions to these genealogies can be viewed on the Sullivan County web site.
He taught physics at Canisius for nearly 40 years and was the director of the college’s Braum Seismograph Station. He also served as associate vicar for religious for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
The Elmira native was a 1940 graduate of Elmira Catholic High School and entered the Society of Jesus the same year. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Woodstock College in 1946 and a master’s and doctoral degree from St. Louis University in 1950 and 1952. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1955 at Fordham University Chapel in the Bronx.
He joined Canisius’ physics department as an assistant professor in 1957. A seismologist, he served as chairman of the department from 1959 to 1970. He was rector of the Canisius Jesuit community from 1971 to 1977, a time period during which he also served on the college’s board of trustees.
Fr. Ruddick also enjoyed the study of genealogy and necrology. In 1994, he was promoted to professor emeritus at Canisius.
Since 1989, he served in the office of religious for the diocese and helped organize the annual Retirement Fund for Religious drive. He assisted for the past five years at St. Ann parish on Broadway, where he lived in the parish residence.
Fr. Ruddick rarely missed a jubilee celebration for fellow priests and women religious, and he was a constant presence at wakes and funerals, always gravitating toward people in good times and bad, said the Rev. Patrick J. Lynch, chairman of the department of religious studies and theology at the college.
“He was a conversationalist without equal in the Jesuit Community at Canisius College,” said Lynch. If he had chosen another path in life, he would probably have been a politician.

Dr. William F. Randall,   (In hunting picture with Wendell Sick)                The Sullivan Review July 24, 1913
DR. W.F. RANDALL LOSES HIS LIFE IN TRYING TO RESCUE ANOTHER
Met Death Bravely in a Well at His Headley Ave Home
Dr. William F. Randall of Dushore, one of the best known physicians in Northern Pennsylvania met his death in the most tragic way, last Thursday evening, in a well at his Headley avenue home. He was overcome by gas in the well while trying to rescue Zack Cole who had also been over-come.
Story of Accident
The water from the Water Company's reservoir has been unfit for use for some time and Dr. Randall like others in town, decided to establish a supply of his own. An abandoned well at the side of his house was opened and repairs were being made whereby a supply of water could be had. The well is about 90 feet deep; 35 feet of it being dug and the remainder drilled. On Saturday, six days before the accident, a blast of dynamite was used at the bottom of the well to produce a supply of water.
After waiting six days, Thursday afternoon at about 5:30 o'clock Zack Cole went down to the bottom of the dug part of the well to make pipe connections.
Cole completed his work and ready to ascend when he became dizzy and then collapsed.
Dr. Randall seeing the condition Cole was in quickly decended on a rope, hoping to rescure him. The doctor tied the rope around Cole's body and by the aid of half a dozen women, who sat on the legs of the tri-pod to keep them from slipping, Jerome O'Neil, two other men pulled the doctor and Cole up about 10 feet to the top of the curbing. Here Dr. Randall called up that he felt faint and wanted to rest a moment.
The telephone had been made use of and just at this time Harland McCarty, clerk in Pealer's drug store, appeared on the scene.
McCarty decended into the well and before he could get a rope around Dr. Randall's body, he, the doctor, either slipped or became unconscious from the gas, and fell the distance of about 10 feet to the bottom of the well.
Cole was then pulled out and the rope lowered to McCarty who put it around his own body. He was pulled out and on reaching the top fell to the ground in an unconscious, condition, but was soon revived by willing hands.
Mr. Cole remained unconscious for over two hours and was in a dangerous condition all the next day.
As soon as McCarty and Cole were out of the well, the rope was placed around Robert Pealer, who had at that moment arrived, and he was lowered to the bottom of the well, where he found Dr. Randall lying in a crouched position with his head under water.
Pealer was unable to make use of the rope so locking his arms around Dr. Randall's body they were both pulled from the well. Pealer, Like McCarty, was nearly overcome with gas.
Dr. Randall's body was taken onto the porch of his home and there six doctors and other willing hands worked for three hours and fifty minutes, in a heroic effort to revive him.
While Dr. Randall was dead in all appearances, yet every means was resorted to in hopes of reviving him. Artificial respiration and the administering of oxygen were of no avail. It was not until nearly four hours had passed that the doctors ceased work and even then they were loath to give up the fight to save Dr. Randall's life.
The exact cause of Dr. Randall's death is unknown, but it is believed his being overcome with gas and the fall coupled together were the cause. A statement by the doctors was that it was not due to drowning as they found no water in his lungs.
The doctor's head and body were badly bruised. There were five bad knocks on his head, two of which were fractures of the skull.
WAS WELL KNOWN
Dr. Randall was very well known all through Sullivan and adjoining counties and had a wide acquaintance throughout Northern Pennsylvania. He was a man of sterling character, and an honor and credit to his profession and the community.
As has truthfully been said, he never shirked a duty, never turned his back on a person in distress and died a hero. It was without thought of his own safety or debate of what the consequences might be, that he rushed to the rescue of another, at the cost of his own life in the noble effort.
Dr. Randall had two very close calls before. One was at the breaker at Bernice several years ago and just about a year ago he was badly burned when gasoline in his auto took fire. His clothing ignited and he leaped ten feet into the creek just south of Main street bridge, where extinguished the flames by rolling into the water his ankle was fractured when he leaped into the creek.
DR. WM. F. RANDALL
Dr. Wm. Floyd Randall was born at Forksville, February 7, 1867 and died at Dushore on Thursday, July 17, 1913 at the age of 46 years, 5, months and 10 days. He was the oldest son of Dr. Wallace Joseph and Sarah A. Randall of Forksville.

He was an honored member of the Bradford County Medical Society and also of the State Medical Society and the National Medical Society. He was a member of the Sullivan County Medical Society and served as this society's secretary from the time of organization.
Dr. Randall was a member of the following Masonic bodies; Evergreen Lodge No. 163, Monroeton; Royal Arch Chapter No. 161; Northern Commandry No. 16; Towanda; Scottish Rite, 32nd degree, Valley of Williamsport; and also a member of the local lodge of Maccabees.
He was member of the Methodist Espiscopal church of Forksville, and since coming to Dushore, attended the services and took active part in the Evangelical church.
Dr. Randall's father died when he was 14 years of age, leaving a wife and six little children. He being the oldest it fell upon him to resume the responsibilities of a father which he ever after held. Dr. Randall and his father both died in their 46th year of life.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o'clock from his late home on Headley avenue, Rev. R.S. Starr pastor of the United Evangelical church officiating. Rev. I am posting Kay's e-mail message to me. Bob Sweeney:
Susan Knable married a Mathias Kees, not Keyes.

In going over Family Treemaker researching on the internet, I found a descendant of her's from CA. He says that Susan married Mathias Kees, b 27 Sept 1839 in Kirchweiler, Germany. They married in Mpls on 27 Sept 1866. Lynn Blazek from the query page on Sullivan Co. ([email protected]) states that Andrew Knable wrote that they left Sullivan Co. on 24 Oct 1865, which was only a month after Margaret died. Also that a sister of Margaret's married an uncle of Hannah Rohe, and I believe that Hannah's father was Valentine Rohe according to census records for 1850 and 1860.

Our family seems to think her sister, besides Caroline, which we know is true, was Sabrina. I also think that upon reading the writing on the will of Charles Napoleon Lefever, his wife's name may be Sabina instead of Sabrina.

Louisa, dau of Andrew and Margaret married a Patrick Gallagher, no date, but she was born June, 1854, so she couldn't have married before they moved. Lynn has the baptismal dates and sponsors for the children of Andrew and Margaret and that is hers to give to you as she wishes.

Your mail should arrive Monday. Best wishes, Kay      Also, Charles Knable, bro of Susan Knaeble Kees, married Susan, sister of Mathias Kees. I will try to contact the Rohe connection. She refused me e-mail last time, so will try again.

Got an e-mail from [email protected] about the Rohe family and the aol postmaster sent it back as undeliverable.

Again, Kay

Rohe by Donna Olsen, 2001

Magdalena Muller was married to Valentine Rohe in PA.

Their oldest child was Valentine Rohe born in Boston in 1802, ?????    others followed.

She and Valentine were born in Europe, probably Germany but I don't have that documentation at this time.

From Kay Ostertag, Aug. 1999

Valentine Rohe was the father of Hannah Rohe, who married Henry Knable first. She was 17 on the 1860 census and had a two month old daughter, Hannah S. with Henry, 27. He only lived a few years, so the family says, and she married William. There is an article from the paper here in Minnesota when he was 82 telling about the couple and his company in the civil war, etc. Anyway, I am trying to find a death record for the boy's mother, Margaret Lefever Knable who died 24 Sept 1865. By the way, William was the brother of Henry, age 26 in 1860 and not living in Sullivan County, PA, any longer that I can see.

From Kay Ostertag,

Looking especially for information on these families who lived in Dushore, Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA - especially Margaret Lefever Knable, wife of Andrew Knable, born in France ca 1808,

lady-in-waiting to the Queen of France before she came over.

I believe they came to Cherry Twp in the late 1830's from NYC and they had 11-14 children. Margaret died 24 Sept 1865 at her home there and then husband Andrew moved to Minnesota with some or most or all of their children. Some would have been old enough then to have stayed behind.

I am led to believe that Margaret was the niece of Joseph Francois Lefever,

Marschal of Napoleon's and made Duke of Danzig by him,

and later made a Peer of the Realm by the King of France.

I am looking for Margaret's birthplace in France and her parent's names.

She supposedly came with a sister, Caroline who married James Thall, a sister Sabrina who married and L. Rohe and a brother Charles, who I think is the Charles Lefever from Montoursville, Lycoming County, PA who died in 1863 and had a wife Sabrina. Any information I have I will share. Henry Knable married Hannah Rohe ca 1858, died a few years later and his brother William married her then. They came to Minnensota also.
