The database page for Raymond Paul Mc Mahon

Ray Mc Mahon was a kind and gentle soul who was full of great potential. He gave the last full measure of devotion to his country in Cambodia on June 4, 1970. Charlie Company lost 18 other young men between March and June of that year in both Vietnam and Cambodia. Our unit, the 7th Regiment of the 1st Cavalry was the unit George Custer commanded at the Little Big Horn massacre a century before and it seemed we enjoyed much of the same luck.

I feel that Mac saved my life by his kindness and the life of Jimmy Smith by his heroism the day he was killed. We had humped 5 clicks or so that day and were in the process of establishing our perimeter and night defensive positions when one of our automatics exploded. Ray told our squad to saddle up to check it out. Since I was digging our hole and “short” with a month left Mac told me to stay in and finish the NPD. Within 10 minutes I heard AK, M16 and M60 fire along with grenade explosions. Ray was alive when they carried him into the perimeter but he died before the Med-a-Vac chopper arrived. He drowned as his lungs filled with blood from his chest wound. I was told that they had found a dead NVA regular at the automatic site and blood trails leading away. Mac and Smitty were in the process of removing intelligence from the dead NVA when other NVA appeared on the trail and started firing.

Mac pushed Smitty down and in doing so took a round in the chest.

I went back to D.C. to thank Mac and also visit the others on June 4, 2000, three decades after his death. I still think about Mac every day. Had he lived he would have made a positive difference in this world. I know he did for Smitty and I that day in Cambodia.

God bless you and keep you, Mac.

MURPHY~ FINAN  misc.

Murphy/Sweeney, POSTED BY BOB SWEENEY  ON      Ancestry.com

Sharon: There were at least two major Murphy families in Sullivan County. I would suggest you first look at the 1880 and 1900 partial censuses that we have on the site and see if you can find a John Murphy in the right age cohort. You could even go back as far as 1870.
My great aunt Ella Sweeney married Chris Murphy, who was a son of one of one of these families. However, I do not have personal knowledge of which one. Another prospect, if you know or can guess the marriage date, is that we can ask one of our regular researchers to check the Sullivan Review for that time period and see what we can find out.
The Streby History of 1903, which we have also posted on our site, provides some biographical information on a Murphy family as well. You might look there.  Bob Sweeney

For Pennsylvania marriages prior to 1790:  " September 8 1772, Elizabeth Pollard Married Daniel Cadden"
(I don't know where.)
My Caddens settled in N.E. Pennsylvania, but we are missing a brother of our immigrant Cadden, who we believe may have been named Patrick, and my Grandfather's Uncle John Cadden went missing from records in Sullivan Co,. PA. There were only 6 Cadden births in Ireland about 100 years ago, and there is some derivation on the origin of the name. I have a very old Gaelic genealogy that says the name was originally from Mayo area, and was CAITHAN. They were baronial land overseers for the pope about 800 years ago. (if not longer) But I have seen claims made that the name is from Co. Armagh, and was from the Gaelic Machoiden. And is now connected to the MacAdam name. I am not in agreement with this. I believe the Caithan to be correct. For one thing the English phonetic pronounciation is CADDEN, and I think the other is for those using the name MacCadden.

Jerome N. Ortlieb                                                                                The Sullivan Review, 11-14-1928
Jerome N. Ortlieb died Wednesday morning at his home on Carpenter Street following an illness of about two years at the age of 70 years. He is survived by his wife, one daughter,
Miss Coloma Ortlieb, R.N., three sons, John of San Francisco, Calif., Otto and Bernard J. Ortlieb of this place, also three grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in Zion Lutheran Church, with interment in the Thrasher cemetery.
An appreciation of the late Jerome N. Ortlieb (contributed by his Pastor)     The Sullivan Review. 11-28-1928
Jerome Napoleon Ortlieb came from German ancestry; his father Benedict having been an immigrant married

Lena Litzelman. Jerome born in Dushore, February 3, 1859 was one of the children of this union and who in childhood became identified with the Lutheran church and was brought up under its spiritual and moral nurture.
Not always but frequently men choose the calling of their fathers. Jerome followed his father’s trade and took up apprenticeship; learned carpentering and cabinet making and in the use of saw, plane and chisel became a master, displaying the skill and talent of a great artist in wood.
His late residence on Carpenter Street stands as a splendid witness to his genius. The hardwood floors of checkerboard design tongued and grooved; the doors and window frames of cherry inlaid with ash and trimmed with walnut; the molding and corners, and the grills and scrolls of woodwork; the massive office desks, tables, bookracks, and other accessories, all of them the product of his patient, untiring handiwork present a project of accomplishment that amazes anyone who understands the nature of such workmanship. It reveals a unique constructive capacity.
In brother Jerome, honesty was coupled with genius. Whether he built a barn or made a parlor ornament he applied the same pains and produced a finished job, well done. Surely in words of Holy writ he was a “workman that needeth not to be ashamed”. The Almighty Maker could say of His creation: “It is very good.” In some such spirit of satisfaction this human mechanic was wont to look upon his “creations”
We remember the subject of this sketch as head member of the firm known as the Dushore Construction Company.
During an illness of more than a year, which slowly sapped his strength, Mr. Ortlieb displayed the same calmness of temperament and unfailing patience as in his days of activity at the carpenter bench never murmuring he bore his sufferings like a Christian martyr. The remembrance of this good man, now departed, remains with us like the precious odor of spikenard.
A gentle husband, kind father, accommodating neighbor and upright citizen, he was respected and highly esteemed, for the substantial qualities of character he possessed. Released from all earthly sufferings at eleven o’clock Wednesday, November 14, 1928, our friend entered into life.
The funeral services were held in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor W.H. Fehr officiating. The funeral address was based on the words of St. Paul 2 Cor. 5:1 “We know… we have a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.”
Mr. Ortlieb was married twice. His first wife was Diana Frey daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Frey. Six years after her death Jerome was wedded to his surviving widow, Jenny McHenry Ortlieb. A daughter Miss Coloma Ortlieb, R.N., three sons, John, of San Francisco, Calif., Otto and Bernard of Dushore; two sisters Miss Mary Ortlieb, and Mrs. Floyd Palmer of Auburn, NY and two brothers Morris Ortlieb of Rochester and Victor of Hollenback and three grandchildren remain to mourn his demise.
His age was 69 years 9 months and 11 days.
It is a big thing to have lived this life aright; to have met the obligations of manhood squarely, and to have borne its responsibilities in an honorable way. Many and trying are petty aggravations. Heavy and grievous to be borne is the cross. “Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Dear madam, sir,
I am looking for the parents of my great-great-grandmother Cornelia RADJA.
She was the mother of Louise Carolina Geertruida SICK, born at Kupang on Timor on February 11 1864.
Her nickname was Lies. She married my great grandfather Pieter POSTHUMUS in 1882 at Koepang.
The familystory is that Cornelia RADJA is the daughter of the Radja of Savu and the princes of Seba, the (main) harbourtown of the island Savu neat Timor.
As it is virtually impossible to obtain information from the Indonesian State archives due to the riots on the island, I wonder if there is another possibility to find out this information?   my email address is: [email protected]
I would appreciate any assistance given.    Kind regards,      Nickolas Posthumus (Castricum, the Netherlands)
