James Farley, 44, widely known
Dushore Farmer, passed away in the Robert Packer Hospital on Saturday evening
after an extended illness.
A son of the late John and Catherine O’Neill Farley, he was born in Cherry Township
on Nov. 29, 1905, on the same farm where his family now resides.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Sick Farley; two daughters, Ann and Mary Lou at
home; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Taffe of Dushore.
Funeral services were held at the family home Wednesday at 9 a.m., and from St.
Basil’s Church in Dushore at 9:30. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery at Cummiskey.

Mildred Louise Sick Farley, 90, of Dushore, Pa. passed away
on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at the Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella, Pa.
Mildred was born May 22, 1913 in Dushore, daughter of the late John C. &
Louise Ambs Sick. She attended the Cherry
Mills School
and married James Farley of Cherry
Township on April 16,
1934 at St. Basil's Church. James predeceased her on April 8, 1950.
Mildred was a homemaker and after her husband's death worked for many years at
the Endicott-Johnson Mfg. Co. in Mildred,
Pa. and Sull-Craft Mfg. Co. of
Dushore. After retirement Mildred was an Avon Lady and also groomed dogs. She
was a member of the Cherry Mills Homemakers, where she made many crafts and
quilts.
Mildred was a very active member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, and a member
of the former Altar and Rosary Society.
Surviving are his two daughters: Ann Dehler of Dushore, and Mary Lou Murray of
Dushore; six grandchildren: Mitchell Dehler of Pasadena, Calif., John Dehler of
New Albany, Stacey Fiester Ceely of Los Angeles, James Farley Fiester of
Mildred, Kristie Murray of Dushore, and Jennifer Kiess of Dushore; five great
grandchildren: Tyler Murray, Alexis Kiess, Daniel Dehler, Sonia Dehler,
Nicholas Dehler, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Farrell and Margaret Gainer and two
brothers, Francis Sick and Joseph Sick and a special friend, Elwood Arey.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2004 at 10 a.m. from the P.
Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water
St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of
Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil's Church, Dushore, with the Rev.
David R. Betts, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery,
Cummiskey, Pa.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St.,
Dushore, from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the
service.
The Catholic Women's Guild will recite the Rosary on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Charles Elwood "Woody" Arey,
82, of Dushore, died June 3, 1998, at Robert Packer
Hospital, Sayre.
He was born September 10, 1915, in Cherry
Township, a son of John D.
and Elsie Kneller Arey.
He was a dairy farmer all of his life and one of the founders of the former
Eastern Milk Producers Association. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran
Church, Zion Chapel,
Dushore.
During World War II (1945-1946) he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army and
saw action in the Philippines.
He was a 50 year member of Loyalsock Post 996 and a member of V.F.W. Post 384
of New Albany.
Surviving are two sisters Mrs. Laura Arey Downes of Annville; and Miss Lois A.
Arey of Dushore; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends Mildred Farley, Kenneth Adams,
Richard Ryan, and Robert Coombs.
He was preceded in death by brothers James and Paul and a niece Linda
Charnitski.
Funeral services were held June 6 at the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home,
Dushore, with Rev. Rodney H. Saylor presiding. Burial was in Zion Lutheran
Cemetery, Dushore. Full
military honors were accorded by the members of Post 996 and V.F. W. 384.

Siegfried “Sig” Dehier, 69, well known Sullivan County Realtor, died October 1,
2000, while appraising a property in Laporte
Township near the top of Sonestown Mountain.
He was born Dec. 12, 1930, in
The Bronx, New York,
a son of Hans and Mathilda Kaufman Dehler.
He served in the US Air Force
for 20 years, serving overseas in Germany
and New Zealand
as well as at stations in The United States.
Retiring to Dushore in 1971,
he and his wife, Ann, opened Dehler’s Decorating Center
on Main Street
(now the site of Pam’s Restaurant) and operated this for 10 years.
Beginning in 1981, he started
a real estate business and in 1985 received his broker’s license and formed
Dehler Realty. He was one of two
certified real estate appraisers in Sullivan
County.
He was a former member and
past president of The Dushore Lions Club and served on the borough council.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Ann Farley; two sons,
Mitchell of Pasadena, CA, and John of New Albany; and three grandchildren. He
was predeceased by a sister, Goodrun Vandegrift.
Funeral services were
private.

Sayre, passed away at home April 10, 1998, following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 9, 1929, in
Sayre the daughter of Thomas and Marie Sick Farrell. She received all

of the Epiphany.
She was a graduate of Epiphany School
and Sayre High School, Class of 1948. Mrs. Donlin
married James E. Donlin on June 19, 1948. A member of the Tioga Country Club,
she enjoyed golfing very much. Mrs. Donlin was a devoted wife and loving
mother. She was predeceased. By her husband, James E. Donlin, on Nov. 23, 1987.
Survivors are her daughter

She was born in Dushore, where she had been engaged as a schoolteacher for some
time.
Surviving are her husband and the following children, John and Ann Marie, her

township and a sister Mrs. Thomas Taffe of Dushore.
Funeral was held from her late home, Saturday, September 4th at 10:30 o’clock
followed with solemn high mass at 11 o’clock in St. Gabriel’s church, Hazleton.
Interment in St. Gabriel’s cemetery.

Nicholas J. Falsey of Sayre, a yard
conductor for the Lehigh Valley and
highly esteemed by all who knew him died April 2nd at the Robert Packer
hospital as a result of burns received
the previous morning.
Mr. Falsey was born near Dushore and on Nov. 5 of last year he was forty-three
years of age. His wife, who was formerly Miss Agatha Litzelman of Sheshequin,
died about six months ago.
He is survived by two daughters and three sons his father and mother, Mr. and
Mrs. Martin Falsey, two sisters and six brothers. Funeral was held Friday.

James Vincent Farrell, 64, of 526
Lincoln St., Sayre, passed away Monday, Dec. 20,
1999, at home following an extended illness.
Born Aug. 19, 1935, in Sayre, Pa.,
the son of Thomas and Marie Sick Farrell. He was a member of the Church of the
Epiphany. He coached the Epiphany basketball team, helped with Little League
baseball in Sayre, helped with the construction of the Valley Playland, where
his name is on the plaque erected in honor of the volunteers. He was member of
the Brick Layers Local No. 8 Union for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of
37 years, Frances, at home; his daughter, Jamie Hess of Athens; his sons, Mark
Farrell and Matthew Farrell, both of Sayre; five grandchildren; his brother and
sister-in-law, Paul and Marian Farrell of Elmira, N.Y. his sisters, Frances
DeCarlo of Long Island, N.Y., Teresa Ware of Mesa, Ariz., and Mary Novak of
Sayre, Pa.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Fred Horn of Sayre,
Genevieve and Dale Woith of Mesa, Ariz., Sally and George Stohlman of Tampa,

He was predeceased by his

Thomas J. Farrell, 87, of Sayre, died at the Bradford County Manor, W. Burlington, Aug. 13, 1978.
Mr. Farrell was born in
Dushore, a son of the late John L. Farrell and Theresa Fries Farrell. He
resided in Dushore until his marriage when he and his wife went to Sayre in
1917.
Mr. Farrell was a
self-employed concrete contractor for 18 years. He then was employed by
Ingersoll-Rand in Athens
as a maintenance foreman until he retired in 1958.
He was a member of the Church
of the Epiphany in Sayre and the Waverly Moose Lodge No. 1490.
His wife, the former Marie
Sick, died March 9, 1948.
He is survived by eight
daughters, Mrs. Frances Decarlo of Long Island, NY; ; Mary Novak of Sayre; Mrs.
Therese Ware, Hemet, CA; Mrs. Jean Donlin, Sayre; Mrs. Genevieve Worth, Mesa,
AR; Mrs. Catherine Horn, Sayre; Mrs. Sally Stohlman, Temple Terrace, FL; Mrs.
Rita Nossal, Apalachin, NY: two sons, T. Paul Farrell of Elmira and James V.
Farrell of Sayre; 36 grandchildren; 10 .great-grandchildren; five brothers,

Long Beach, Calif.; Jean, Genevieve, Catherine, Sally and Rita, all at home;

Valeria T. Farrell, age 90, of
Dushore, PA passed away on Monday evening, October 17, 2005 at the Memorial
Hospital, Towanda, PA.
Valeria was born on December 25, 1914 in Mildred,
PA daughter of the late Sebastian
(Busty) Stortini and Anna Paganucci Stortini. She graduated from the Dushore High School a member of the class of
1938. She worked in her dad’s Soda Fountain and Tavern in Mildred for eight
years. She married Joseph G. Farrell of Dushore,
PA on November 26, 1946 and moved
to the family farm outside of Dushore. Joe predeceased her on February 19,
1985.
Valeria was an extraordinary spouse, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She took care of her mother-in-law, farmed, cooked and cleaned for her husband,
two brothers-in-law and her four sons. After her children were graduated from
school, she worked as a cook and waitress at Frank Bernatavitz’s Lunch for
several years and then for Minier’s Corner Luncheonette from 1976 until 1991
when she retired. At the same time Valeria was still cooking at home and had
dinner prepared each evening for children and grandchildren.
Valeria was a very active member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore, PA
and a member of its Altar & Rosary Society. She was very active with the
church picnics and especially with the Hunter’s Spaghetti Supper held at St.
Basils on the first Sunday of hunting season. She was a lifetime member of
Loyalsock Post #996 American Legion Auxiliary, Dushore, PA.

Augustine (Nick) Gainer, 88, of
Dushore, died January 31, 1986, at Memorial
Hospital, Towanda.
He
was born in Cherry Mills, Cherry township, February 13, 1897, a son of James
and Bridget Farley Gainer.
For most of his life Mr. Gainer was a dairy farmer, but also kept a nice flock
of sheep. He also worked for Pennsylvania Department of Highways before his
retirement.
He was a member of St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret Sick of Dushore, whom he married
November 21, 1921; three sons, Eugene of New Alexandria, PA William of
Endicott, NY and John of Dushore; two daughters Mrs. Rosemary Walsh of Dushore
and Mrs. Jo Ann Merge of Pittsburgh; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held February 3 from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home,

Laporte. She was born In Mildred, March 25, 1902, a daughter of John C. and
Louise Ambs Sick. She was the widow of Augustine (Nick) Gainer who died in
1986. A 1920 graduate of St. Basil’s High School, she was an active member of
St. Basil’s Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.
Surviving are three sons,
Eugene of New Alexandria; William of Endicott, NY; and John (Jack) of Dushore;
two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Rosemary) Walsh of Dushore; and Mrs. Gene (JoAnn)
Merge of Pittsburgh; a sister, Mildred
Farley of Dushore: 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren,
She was predeceased by a
sister, Marie Sick Farrell of Sayre; and two brothers, Francis A. Sick and
Joseph J. Sick both of Dushore.

July 18 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial at her church, with Rev. Michael B. Harris presiding. Burial was in the
parish cemetery.

John J. Gainer, age 70,
well known Dushore businessman passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Robert Packer
Hospital, Sayre, PA.
Jack
was born in Dushore, July 15, 1938 son of the late Augustine (Nick) and
Margaret Sick Gainer. He graduated from St. Basil’s High School a member of the
Class of 1956. He married the former Virginia Ruth Bullock of Wilmot on June
18, 1960; she predeceased him last April 7th, 2008 after 47 years of marriage.
On
Valentine’s Day in 1962 he and Virginia purchased Hamer’s Atlantic Service
Station from John Hamer in Dushore. He operated the business until 1990 when he
moved the Stihl and Cub Cadet Franchise businesses to his home.
Jack
was a member of St. Basil’s Church in Dushore,
PA.

Virginia
Ruth Bullock Gainer, age 70, of Dushore, PA passed away peacefully on Monday,
April 07, 2008 at her home with her loving family at her side.
Virginia was born November 7, 1937 in Wyalusing Township a daughter of the late Charles
W. and Edna M. Adams Bullock. She graduated from Turnpike
High School, Mildred, PA
a member of the class of 1955. Following graduation she started working for the
Endicott Johnson Shoe Company in Mildred. She left the shoe factory after a few
years and worked in the Ben Franklin Store in Dushore. She married John J.
Gainer of Dushore, PA on June 18, 1960. On Valentine’s Day 1962
she and Jack purchased Hamer’s Atlantic Service Station from John Hamer in
Dushore. Virginia
helped in the garage from 1962 until 1990. Virginia then went to work for the Sullivan
Review where she learned the printing press and became a master printer. She
worked at her printing job until July of 2007 when her illness forced her to
retire.
Virginia was a very active member
of St. Basil’s Church and Altar and Rosary Society and also the Dushore Fire
Co. She would help at every church activity, especially the 4th of July Picnic
and the fall hunters’ spaghetti Dinner. She solicited ads for the Picnic Ad
Book for many years and then set it up and printed it. She was an indispensible
member of the Dushore Fire Co., who worked incessantly and quietly in the
background, answering ambulance calls for many years before the number 911was
installed. She would coordinate and help make sandwiches, and prepare coffee
for the firemen when they were out on a late night or early morning fire. She
ran the cake wheel and helped with the auction at the yearly fireman’s carnival
in June of each year. In 1978 the fire company had a huge fundraiser to pay off
long term debt and rehabilitate the fire house. She not only helped with the
fundraising but every year since, she has helped maintain the database of folks
in the fire and ambulance coverage area, but also printed the raffle tickets,
letters and then labeled the packets before going to the post office for
mailing. She did all this up to last summer when her health began to fail her.

He was born in Sayre, PA
on January 26, 1931 a son of Augustine (Nick) and Margaret Sick Gainer. He graduated from St. Basil’s High School,
Dushore, a member of the Class of 1949.
He served with the U.S. Navy
and returned home and married Joyce A. Barry of Albany Township,
on April 12, 1958. Joyce pre-deceased him in 1996. He resided in the
Towanda/Monroeton area for several years before moving to Endicott, NY
where he was employed as an electrician for over 30 years until his retirement.
He was an avid golfer and out
doors man who enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was a member of Our Lady
of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Endicott,
NY.
Surviving are a son, Stephen,
of Baltimore, MD;
daughters, Lori Baraldi of Tampa, FL: and Nancy of Endlcott, NY; brothers,

Mary Kay “Mamie” Holcombe
Confar, 63, of Dushore,
PA, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2006 at
the Williamsport Hospital. Mamie was born Nov. 8, 1942, a daughter of
Richard L. and Ann Driscoll Holcombe of Dushore. She graduated from St. Basil’s
High School, a member of the Class of 1960. She graduated from Mansfield University with a B.A. and M.S. in Art.
Mamie taught elementary school art in the Troy
and Sullivan County School Districts
until her retirement in 2004. She was a superb teacher and was greatly admired
by her students.
She was a member of St. Basil’s Church in Dushore and a member of St. Basil’s
and St. Francis Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of Alpha Zeta
Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of women educators and an outstanding
member of the Red Hat Society.
Mamie had a great sense of humor and enjoyed the company of her many friends
and colleagues.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a daughter, Eileen A. Metheny of
King of Prussia; a son, Benjamin Radencic of Williamsport; husband, John
Patrick Confar of Seattle, WA; brother and sister-in-law, Richard J. and Paula
Holcombe of Laporte; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie A. and Thomas Gorsky
of Penn Yan, NY; five granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; several nieces,
nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, George A. Radencic,
Jr., on June 20, 1996.

COOK HOLCOMBE, 89 of Dushore died Aug. 18, 1992 at her home. She was born June
1, 1903 in Dushore, a daughter of Vell B. Holcombe and R. Jennie Cook
Holcombe. Miss Holcombe, a well-known educator/teacher and historian in
Sullivan, Bradford and Tioga counties, was a graduate of Dushore High School,
where she later taught and served as principal. She graduated from Temple University
in Philadelphia and received a master’s degree
at Cornell University,
Ithaca, N.Y.
She also taught school in Canton and Mansfield, where she
supervised student teachers. Following her service at Mansfield she taught at Towanda and retired
from teaching in the late 1960s. Miss Holcombe was a founder of the
Sullivan County Historical Society and its museum, where she was active until
her death. During World War II she was a member of the United States
Armed Forces. She was a charter member of the Dushore Music Club, a
member of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and a
member of St. Basil’s Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She
assisted many Boy Scouts in obtaining Eagle Merit Badges in nature and citizenship
studies. Miss Holcombe wrote a column for The Sullivan Review called
“What’s Blooming?” in which she described the many wild flowers and ferns
native to Sullivan
County. She also
gave slide presentations on flowers and ferns using photographs she took
herself. Surviving are three brothers, P.J. Holcombe of Bloomsburg, V.C.
Holcombe of Laporte and R.L. Holcombe of Dushore. She was predeceased by
a sister, Alice Holcombe McCarty. Several nieces and nephews, grandnieces
and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews also
survive. Friends may call at the Russell P. McHenry funeral Home, Dushore
this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow, Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9

Pierson J. “Si” Holcombe, 95,
formerly of Benton and Bloomsburg, and currently of Brighton Gardens, Cherry
Hill, NJ died August 21, 2002 at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in
Philadelphia where he had been a patient since August 17. He had been in
failing health for the past several years.
Born February 2, 1907 in Dushore, Sullivan
County, he was a son of
Vell B. Holcombe and R. Jennie (Cook) Holcombe. He and his wife, the former Ada
Lucille Comfort of Troy,
celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary this past July 4th.
Mr. Holcombe was a longtime Benton
businessman. He owned and operated the P.J. Holcombe Funeral Home in Benton and
also The Holcombe Furniture Store. He and his wife moved to Benton in 1947 when they took over the former
Chapin Funeral Home, which they operated until 1965.
He later opened an accounting business on Main Street in Benton until his final retirement.
Mr. Holcombe served in WWII as a Technician Fifth Grade, Company C in the 66th
infantry Training Battalion. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was
discharged on September 4, 1945.
While living in Benton, Mr. Holcombe was an
active member of the Benton
United Methodist
Church. After moving to
Bloomsburg in 1981 he and his wife joined St. Matthew Lutheran Church. In 1997
they moved to Cherry Hill.
Mr. Holcombe was a 1925 graduate of Dushore
High School and a 1930 graduate of Penn State
University where he
earned his B.S. in Commerce and Finance.
He received his mortuary school training at the Renard School of Embalming in Manhattan, NY,
graduating in 1936.
Long active in community and civic affairs, MR. Holcombe was a 50-year member
of Washington Lodge, No. 265, F. & A.M. of Bloomsburg. He was also a member
of the Bloomsburg American Legion; the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge; a former member
of the Chimney Stack Rod and Gun Club in Red Rick; the “Stuffer’s Club” of Benton
and the former Kiwanis Club of Benton.
Mr. Holcombe served on the board of directors for the Benton Cemetery
Association for many years.
He was involved with several professional organizations including the National
Funeral Directors Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association
and he was a past president of the Central Pennsylvania Funeral Directors
Association.
An avid Penn State fan, he was also a life member of
the Penn State Alumni Association.
His hobbies included making furniture and woodworking. He was also a Civil War
History buff.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Ada,
are three children; Pierson J. Holcombe, JR. of Advance, NC; Mrs. Michael
(Susan L.) Rhoads, of Medford, NJ;
Mrs. Gary (Marianne) Bettis, of Prescott,
AZ.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a
brother, Richard L. Holcombe of Dushore.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Holcombe and Alice McCarthy
and by a brother, Vell H. Holcombe and by an infant grandson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 24th, 2002 at St. Matthew Lutheran
Church, Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Ralph D. Sigler, presiding. Burial was in the
Benton Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by
the Benton V.F.W. and Benton Masonic Lodge conducted services at the graveside
as well.

Ann
was born in Towanda, PA on July 16, 1918 the youngest and last
surviving of 10 children born to James & Clara Bird Driscoll. She graduated
from St. Agnes
High School a member of the class of
1935. She married Richard L. Holcombe of Dushore,
PA on June 15, 1937. They would
have celebrated their 73nd Wedding Anniversary next week.
Ann
was a homemaker and a loving spouse, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was very active in her community with her church and civic associations.
She was the first Den Mother of the Cub Scouts, Den1, Pack 48 and very instrumental
in organizing bloodmobiles for many years.
Ann
was a very active member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, PA
where was a lifelong member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a very long and
active member of the church choir. She also taught CCD for over 20 years
preparing the youth for the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. She
was also a member of Loyalsock American Legion Post 996 Ladies Auxiliary and a
member of the Sullivan County Republican Women and the Laporte Women's Club.

He was a graduate of Dushore High School and he attended Pennsylvania
State College for two years.
A retired funeral director
and merchant, Vell was active in the Dushore community until moving to Laporte
in 1987. He was a charter member of the

of the originators of the Bow Hunters Festival.
Surviving are a son Vell H.
Holcombe, of Milton, PA; two daughers, Jean Gottas of Springfield, Missouri,
and Irene Tubach of Laporte; two brothers, Pierson of Southampton, N.J. and
Richard of Dushore, three first cousins, Mary Litzelman and Joseph Lynch of
Dushore and Mary Conkling of Virginia Beach, VA; eleven grandchildren and
nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents
and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice McCarthy and Pauline
Holcombe.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Mildred on
November 24th with the Rev. Michael Harris as celebrant.
Interment was in Mountain Ash
Cemetery, Laporte.

Rosemary Gainer Walsh, 84, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at Robert Packer
Hospital in Sayre, PA.
Rosie was born Aug. 28, 1922 in Dushore, a daughter of the late Augustine N.
and Margaret Sick Gainer. She graduated from St. Basil’s High School in
Dushore, a member of the Class of 1940.
She was an active member of St. Basil’s Church and belonged to the Altar and
Rosary Society, a member of the church choir and for over 20 years, taught the
First Communion Class. She and her family have baked beans for the St. Basil’s
and St. Francis (Overton) picnics for over 30 years.
Rose was elected for over 40 years as a Cherry Township Auditor. She also was
very involved with the Sullivan
County 4-H and was an
accomplished seamstress and quilter. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross
Bloodmobile, a member of the Tuesday Book Club and a volunteer at the Sullivan
County Library.
On June 26, 1943, she married Bernard W. Walsh of Murraytown; he predeceased
her on Jan. 23 of this year. They were the parents of four children *: Mary Lou
Meehan (John McCarthy), Wyalusing, James Walsh, Dushore, Eileen Walsh (Jordan
Langelier), Denver, CO and Peggy (William) Black, Laporte; six grandchildren
and three great-grandsons; two brothers and sister-in-law; John (Jack) and
Virginia Gainer of Dushore and Eugene Gainer of New Alexandria, PA; a sister
and brother-in-law, Jo Ann and Gene Merge, Pittsburgh; a sister-in law, Martina
Cavanaugh of Concord, NC, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY, and numerous nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William E. Gainer.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. from the P.
Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water
St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of
Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Bert
S. Kozen, her pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 8 from 2 to
4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Members of St. Basil’s St. Francis of Assisi Altar and
Rosary Society will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. There will
be a Vigil Service on Friday at the funeral home.

Bernard William Walsh, 91,
well-known former Sullivan County Commissioner, passed away on Monday, Jan. 23,
2006 at The Highlands Care Center in Laporte, PA.
Bernie was born May 27, 1914 in Murraytown, a son of the late James and Evelena
Bonci Walsh. In 1920, he went to work in the Murraytown mines as a breaker boy
and later worked on the shaker chutes. He graduated from the three-year Lopez High School
in 1931 and from Dushore
High School in 1932.
Following graduation, he took a business course at St. Basil’s. For a short
time, he worked at Elmira
Bridge and for the state
as an equipment clerk.
Bernie went to work at Fitzpatrick & Connelly in 1945. He was there when it
became Fitzpatrick & Lambert and retired in 1978. He served on the Cherry
Township Election Board as Judge of Election and also served as Sullivan County
Commissioner from 1960-1968 and 1972-1976. Bernie served on the Sullivan County
Board of Elections during his terms as commissioner and later served with other
retired commissioners supervising the election process when the commissioners’
office was on the ballot. He joined the Dushore Fire Company in 1958 and served
as fire police captain for many years and began driving the ambulance in 1978.
Bernie drove the ambulance for many years and continued through his retirement
years, almost on a daily basis, until his 90th birthday. He became a member of
the Sullivan County Board of Assistance in 1998 and retired from that post
earlier this year.
He was an active member of St. Basil’s Church and belonged to the former Holy
Name Society. He and his family have baked beans for the St. Basil’s and St.
Francis (Overton) picnics for over thirty years.
On June 26, 1943, he married Rosemary Gainer of Dushore. They are the parents
of four children: Mary Lou Meehan, Wyalusing, Jim Walsh, Dushore, Eileen Walsh,
Denver, CO and Peggy (Bill) Black, Laporte. They have six grandchildren and two
great-grandsons; a sister, Martina Cavanaugh of Concord,
NC, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY,
and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph
Walsh, Lewis Walsh, Mark Walsh and James Walsh.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. from the P. Dean
Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St.,
Dushore, and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St. Basil’s
Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Bert S. Kozen, his pastor, presiding. Interment
will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
Friends called at the Homer Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 4 and
7 to 9 p.m. There was a Vigil Service on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral
home.

Patrick A. Walsh, one of the pioneer
settlers of Lopez, died at his home Wednesday November 10, after an illness of
fourteen weeks, at the age of 81 years.
Mr. Walsh is survived by his wife and the following children: John V. Walsh of Fredericksburg, Va., Wm.
E. Walsh of Hopedale, Ohio;
Walter J. Walsh of Pittsburgh;
Misses Alice and Kathryn of Binghamton, N.Y.; Margaret a teacher in the Bernice
schools, and Teresa a teacher in the Lopez, school.
A Requiem High Mass was celebrated in St. Francis’ church at Mildred, Saturday,
By Rev. M.C. King, and burial was made in St. Basil’s cemetery at Dushore,
where the final benediction was pronounced by Rev. M.F. Sweeney, pastor of St.
Basil’s.
The following nephews, acted as pallbearers: Jas. W. Walsh, Joseph A. Walsh,

I'm descended from the oldest child of Evert and Amy Porter Shadduck and from
the oldest child of Pierson and Sophi Mott Holcomb of LeRoy whose son Vell
Holcombe of Dushore married a Sick descendant. Their daughter, Pauline Holcombe
collected genealogical information about her mother's family that is included
in a book that her nieces put together from her information, called "Aunt
Paulie's Book". I've found the Sick information you've included on the
site interesting as it relates to what is included in her book.
I noticed somewhere on the site that you are in Memphis. My uncle pastored a church in Memphis for years, he's
now retired. I found it interesting that both your path and his went thru Binghamton NY.
You two would probably have a good time remembering Sullivan Co and Broome
Co. Thanks again!

In the death of William Fairchild,
at his home on the Turnpike road near town on Monday May 3, the community has
lost one if its highly respected citizens.
Last autumn he had the misfortune to break his leg while attending to his work
on the farm and was for many weeks a sufferer in the Packer hospital at Sayre,
from which place he was removed to his home on Christmas eve.
His death was caused by paralysis, the warning coming only a few days before
the final summons.
The last years of his life were saddened by the tragic death of his wife, who
was burned to death in an attempt to extinguish a fire caused by a spark from a
passing train, on the road which runs past their farm.
He is survived by five children; Adrian, of Cadillac, Michigan, Mrs. Snell, of
Hillsgrove, Mrs. William Landon, of Mildred, Laura and Freeman, of Dushore,
also two sisters, Charlotte at home and Mrs. William Yonkin, of Cherry.
In his active days he was one of the famous hunters of this vicinity, and many
are the droll stories told the neighbors of strange experiences in surrounding
forests.
The funeral will be held Thursday morning from his late residence, with
interment in Cadwallader cemetery, where rest many members of the Fairchild
family.
Freeman Fairchild, the grandfather of the subject of this sketch, came to
Dushore in 1819, while the country was yet a wilderness, and established the
first permanent settlement. He was the keeper of the first hotel, as well as
the first post master of Dushore, and was instrumental in bringing the first school
master to the place and in starting the first newspaper which was known as the
Sullivan Eagle.

Freeman Fairchild, 78, lifelong
Dushore RD resident, died Friday morning at the veterans Hospital, Wilkes-Barre
where he had been a patient since 1964.
Mr. Fairchild was a World War I veteran, having served in the Army, Company M.
329th Infantry. He was born in Cherry Township, Sullivan
County, February 16,
1889, the son of the late William and Anna Hall Fairchild.
He was a member of the American Legion, Loyalsock Post 996 of Dushore.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Carrie N. Landon of Long Beach, Calif.
Graveside Military services were conducted by members of the Dushore American
Legion, Loyalsock Post 996.
Pallbearers were: Leo Barry, William Barth, Sr., John Chatburn, Leo O’Neil,
Edward Radka, James Reagan, all Legioneers.

KENNETH
EUGENE GUNTHER, 45, of Wysox, died Thursday morning, June
28, 2001, at Memorial
Hospital, Towanda.
Born July 8, 1955, in Laporte, he was a son of the late Howard B. and Mary
Elizabeth Phillips Gunther. Kenneth was a graduate of Sullivan County
High School, class of
1974. He was formerly employed by Memorial Hospital,
Towanda and Taylor Packing, Wyalusing, and served as a security office for the
Wysox Family Drive-In. At the time of his passing, Kenneth was employed
by P.T.I. Security at E.I. Dupont in Towanda. He was a member of the
Wysox Ambulance Association, where he formerly served as captain. He was
also a member of the Wysox Fire Department. Following the division of the
Wysox Ambulance Association from the Wysox Fired Department, Ken maintained the
ambulance service from his home in Wysox. He also was very active with
the Boy Scouts of America Troop 50, Wysox, and was a leader with Bud
Secules. Ken volunteered as a medic for the Towanda Pee Wee Midget
Football Association. He was a member of the Heritage Bible
Church. Ken enjoyed
bowling and was a Young American Bowlers’ association Coach in Towanda League
at Starlight Bowling Lanes, North Towanda.
He is survived by his: wife, LaVeda Chilson Gunther of Wysox; two sons, Jacob
J. and David J. Gunther, both of Wysox; four sisters, Katherine Andies of
Virginia, Ruth Fulmer of Laporte, Doris Gunther of West Virginia and Mary
Walters of Montoursville; four brothers, William Gunther of South Carolina,
Jack Gunther of Williamsport, Donald Gunther of Williamsport, John Gunther of
Maryland. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Gunther Jr., and
a sister, Anna Green. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 330,
2001, at 7 p.m. at the Wysox Ambulance Association garage, with the Rev. Dennis
Fox, officiating. Interment will be at the Laddsburg Cemetery
at a later date. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be
directed to the Wysox Ambulance Association, Wysox,
PA or the Five Rivers Council, Boys Scouts of
America, Horseheads, NY in Kenneth E. Gunther’s memory.

Mrs. Emma E. Hartford, 88, of
Dushore, R.D. 2, died January 24, 1974.
She was born June 9, 1885 in Cherry Twp, Sullivan County,
daughter of the late Edward and Ella Smith Yonkin.
She was a lifetime resident of Sullivan
County and was a member
of the Redeemer United Church of Christ, Dushore and its Ladies Guild. Her
husband, the late George Hartford, preceded her in death by 12 years.
She is survived by a son-in-law, Donald Fetherbay at home; several
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. Also
surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, Dushore,
with the Rev. James E. Johnson, a former pastor of the church, officiating.
Interment was in the Peace
Cemetery, Dushore, RD2.

Donald M Hunsinger age 68, of Dushore went
home to be with the Lord on Wednesday January 12, 2005,
He
was born on April 29,1936 in Ithaca, New York, a son of the late Merle Hunsinger
and Pearl Harney.
On
October 23, 1965 he married the former Gladys Swain Hunsinger. They have
celebrated 39 years of marriage.
Mr.
Hunsinger was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion
Chapel of Dushore, and was a former member of the Estella Grange.
He
was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed watching sports. He enjoyed being in the
out doors, and especially time spent with his family.
He
leaves surviving his wife Gladys Swain Hunsinger at home: three sons: Raymond
and Sandra Greene, of Dushore, Brian and Lori Hunsinger, of Dushore, Mark
Hunsinger at home; two grandchildren Dawn Greene of Dushore, Raymond Greene of
Elk Lake; his mother Pearl Harney of Dushore: two half brothers Joe Harney and
Richard Harney and a half sister Marie McKernan, all of Dushore; and numerous
niece and nephews.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold
Hunsinger.
Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15, in the Shepherd of the
Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel, of Dushore, with his pastor Rev. Randele
Albers, officiating.
Interment
will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Dushore.
Friends
and family are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening, January 14, in
the Russell P McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter Street, Dushore, and on
Saturday from 10 to the time of the funeral service.

Harold M. Hunsinger, 65, of Meshoppen died
July 16, 1999 at tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.
He
was born July 11, 1934, in Sayre, a son of Pearl Rinebold Harney and the late
Merle Hunsinger.
He
was a farmer and worked on farms in Towanda, Meshoppen and Laceyville; and was
also employed by the Meshoppen Township superviosers.
Surviving
are his wife, the former Doris E. Swain of Meshoppen to whom he was married 45
years; his mother, of Dushore a duaghter Judy Jaynes of Meshoppen; two sons,
Dale of Orth Rome; and Bruce of Laceyville; a steoson Ronald McCormick of
Dallas; a brother, Donald Hunsinger of Dushore; half-brothers, Richard and
Joseph Harney, both of Dusore; a half-sister, Mairie McKernan of Dushore; 12
grandchyildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeal
servies were held July 20 at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Meshoppen, with Rev.
Dave Hinkley presiding. Burial was in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luther's
Mills.

Harry E. Hunsinger, Of Elmira, NY Was born May
17, 1921 in Dushore, PA, the son of the late Harry B. and Agnes (Karge)
Hunsinger. He was reunited with his beloved wife, Viola B. (Reinbold)
Hunsinger, who preceded him in death in 1987, on Monday, June 26, 2006, at the
Bath VA Medical Center Nursing Care Unit. His brothers, Bert and Richard
Hunsinger; sisters, Violet Dieffenbach and Frances Kinsley; son-in-law, David
Taylor predeceased him. He is survived by his loving daughters, Donna Mae
Taylor of Elmira, NY, Dawn (B. J.) Dildine, also of Elmira, NY; much-loved
grandchildren, Duane Taylor, Denise Slusser, Tiffany Dildine and Taylor
Dildine; adored great-grandsons, Keith and Kyle Slusser and J. J. Dildine;
sisters, Evalda (William) Black of
Dushore, PA; Emily (Paul) Rohe of
Rushville, PA; sister-in-law, Hila Hunsinger of Elmira Heights, NY; along with
several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Harry retired from
American Bridge in 1983 after 30+ dedicated years of service as a machinist. He
was a Staff Sergeant with the US Army proudly serving his country during WWII.
Harry was a lifetime member of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department. He had
a longtime love of the game of Euchre and played at the Millerton Senior Center
often. Cribbage was also another one of his favorite games. Family and friends

Elmira, NY, on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00

Merle Levy Hunsinger The Sullivan Review December 10, 1936
Merle Hunsinger of Cherry Township,
died Tuesday, December 29th, the result of injuries he received while cutting
props for Kline Richie, near Bernice. He had felled the tree, when it kicked
back, striking him on the head with a limb. His skull was crushed. An ambulance
was called but he died before he could be taken t the hospital. He was born
March 27, 1910. Mr. Hunsinger is survived by his wife, Pearle Rinebold
Hunsinger, and two children, two months and two years of age. Also his father,
a brother and sister. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30
o'clock in the Holcombe funeral parlor on Main Street. Rev. H. Deisher will
officiate. Burial in the Zion Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Rose Farrell Bahr, 64, of
Mildred, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1976, at the Robert Packer Hospital.
She was born in Dushore Nov. 4, 1911, the daughter of the late John L. and Frances M. Fries Farrell. A
lifelong resident of Sullivan County, she was a graduate of St. Basil’s High
School, and a member of St. Basil’s Church.
Mrs. Bahr is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James (Marlene) Spence of Mildred;
six brothers, Thomas and Patrick of Sayre, John, Eugene, Joseph and William,
all of Dushore; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Cecilia) Collins of Elmira; four
grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband Dane Bahr died May
3, 1965.
The funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 9:15 a.m. from the Regina Tubach
Homer Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Francis of
Assisi Church, Mildred.
Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore.

Theodore C. Farrell, junior member
of the Farrell Auto Co, of Brooklyn, NY and Miss Anna Lavelle of Dushore, former home and
birthplace of the groom, were joined in marriage on Tuesday, July 8, by the
Rev. Henry C. Jordon, pastor of St. Patrick's Church, Bay
Shore, L.I.
The couple kept their plans a secret and Tuesday evening went to Bay Shore,
from Brooklyn, where they were quietly married.
The bride and groom have many friends in Dushore and vicinity who join The
Review with best wishes.
Mr. Farrell and his bride grew up together in Dushore, where Father Jordon also
lived. Some years ago, however Mr. Farrell went to Indiana, where he started
his connection with the automobile business. About six years ago he went to
Brooklyn. He is a mechanic and expert on automobiles and has a wide and varied
experience in the developing and promotion of the automobile business from a
manufacturing standpoint.
The bridal party left on a tour through the Catskills in their new car and will
be at home after August 1, in Brooklyn.
Obituary for John H. McDonald
(The Review, Dushore, Pa., Jume 6 1900). "Once more has the grim reaper,
Death, been among us. This time the victim was John H. McDonald, who had passed
three score and ten mile stones during his journey on this earth. Mr. McDonald
came to this country with his father 63 years ago. One year later his father
died and was buried in St. Basil's Cemetery at Dushore. For a number of years
Mr. McDonald followed the lumber woods for a living, after which he was engaged
in the hotel business for a number of years in Towanda and Dushore. He was
employed at Thorndale for sometime, from where he came to Bernice, where he
followed the vocation of mining for 17 or 18 years before his death. He was
married in 1852 to Miss Julia Sheridan and to them have been born 15 children,
5 of whom are dead. The following children survive him:Mrs. Daniel Clark, of
Cortez, Mrs. Richard Clark, Marielle, Mich., Mrs. F. H. Farrell, Dushore, Mrs.
John Daly, Mildred, Mrs.Thomas Fitzgerald, Bernice, Miss Clara, Cortez, Misses
Mildred and Florence and Mr. Lawrence, of Bernice. Mr. McDonald was always a
friend to the laboring men and when he came to Bernice he joined Local Assembly
1730, K. of L.. and remained a member until his death, which occured on the
evening of May 31, 1900. During life he was a friend to everyone with whom he
came in contact, and at the funeral Monday, June 3rd, the large consort that
followed his remains to their last resting place was an indication of his
popularity. The funeral services were held in St. Francis' church, Mildred,
where a requiem mass was read and a beautiful sermon delivered by Rev. J. A.
Euright, after which the body was placed in the hearse and taken to Dushore,
followed by a large number of people, and laid to rest in the St. Basil's
Cemetery. By his death his wife has lost a kind and loving husband, his
children a father who never forget his duty towards them, and the people of
Bernice have lost a kind and obligating neighbor, and the state one of their
best citizens, The people of Bernice and vicinity extend to the bereaved family
their heartfelt sympathy."

Death of A.E. FARRELL, Sullivan
Review, 3-19-1896
This community was startled and inexpressibly grieved last Thursday morning to
learn of the sudden death at about two o'clock that morning, of Ambrose E. FARRELL, of Lopez. He was
one of the proprietors of the Hotel Lopez at that place, and retired at about
ten o'clock in his usual state of health. He awakened his wife about two
o'clock complaining of an alarming pain in his heart. Rev. Father ENRIGHT slept
in the hotel and she went to summon him, but before the priest could reach his
bedside he was dead. The funeral was held Saturday, March 14, Mass being said
in the chapel at Lopez, and the body was brought to Dushore on the 9:13 a.m.
train, and interred in St. Basil's cemetery, hundreds of sorrowing relatives
and friends following the casket that contained all that was mortal of warm
hearted, generous and true Ambrose E. FARRELL.
Ambrose Edward FARRELL was born in Cherry township, this county, September 1,
1848, and at the time of his death, March 12, 1896, was consequently 47 years,
6 months and 11 days old. His early life was spent as a farmer's boy, and he
drifted from that occupation to mining. The years of 1872, '73 and '74 he spent
in the vicinity of Houtzdale, following the occupation of a coal miner. He was
first married in May, 1880 to Mary
BERGAN.
This union was a particularly happy one, but was cut short by the death of the
young wife in March of the following year, leaving a girl baby to inherit the
wealth of affection lavished on the mother. This child was ever his tenderest
care, and as she grew in years and beauty, all that money could buy or love
suggest, was hers at the slightest wish.
He gave up the occupation of miner at Bernice in 1885 and opened a livery
stable in Dushore, changing his business a year later to that of running the
Exchange Hotel. Always prudent and a close financier he succeeded in making and
saving money, and in 1889, in partnership with Jerry DEEGAN, he purchased Hotel
Lopez, at the then newly founded and rapidly growing town. This hotel was a
veritable gold mine for a number of years, and at his death Mr. FARRELL, while
not positively wealthy as wealth is counted nowadays, could count his dollars
by the thousands, and his wife and children are left in very comfortable
circumstances.
He was married three years ago to Hannah
GILLIGAN, and as the fruits of this union there are two children a boy and
a girl. The heart broken wife has the sympathy of all in her severe affliction.
In 1894 he received the nomination of the Democratic party for Member of
Assembly, but owing to dissensions within the party was defeated. Four
brothers, John H., of Dushore, James K., of Cherry, and Frank and Peter of
Corning, survive him. He was eminently respected by all, and a firm friend, a
kind hearted, genial, generous man, whose sudden death has cast a gloom over
all the eastern part of Sullivan county.

Mr. Frank Middendorf, The

Mr. Frank Middendorf, of this place,
and Miss Mary Farrell, of Cherry, were married at St. Basil’s church this
Wednesday morning by Rev. Fr. Walsh.
They left on the morning train for Philadelphia
on a wedding tour.
Mr. Middendorf is well known in this section and much respected for his steady
and industrious habits. Miss Farrell is the daughter of James K. Farrell, of Cherry. She has won the respect and esteem of
a large circle of friends.
That their journey through life may be accompanied with prosperity and
happiness is the wishes of their numerous friends including the Gazette.

am looking for information on the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Sullivan Co. I
believe there were two divisions started before 1900 . Division Two was
organized according to the Sullivan Review of Nov.22, 1894:
Ancient Order of Hibernians: Division No. 2 A.O.H. of Sullivan County, was
organized in this place Sunday afternoon, November 18, with thirty or forty
members, and the following officers: President, E.H. FARRELL; Vice President
D. KEEFE; Secretary, (?) HOPE; Assistant Secretary, W.L. FARRELL; Treasurer,
Frank COYLE.
I have no real information at all on Division One, possibly Laporte, other than
there was a Division Two. If you have any

Frank Farrell The
Republican, 5-22-1891
Frank Farrell of Dushore, while
working in the bark woods in the employ of Pat Sweeney on or near the Mehoopany
Creek in Colley twp. Was instantly killed on Monday at about 8:30 a.m. by a
fallen limb or a piece of a tree top which had lodged in the tree he and his
brother Jerry were in the act of cutting down.
Jerry saw the limb about 12 feet in the air sprang and informed Frank at the
same time. Frank made a desperate struggle for life, but was too late. The limb
came down like a cannon ball striking him on the head crushing it to a mash and
one limb piercing his side.
Decease was brought to Dushore on the same day of the accident and the burial
took place on Wednesday in the Catholic cemetery at said place.
Frank and Jerry are sons of James Farrell of Dushore, and were not old
experienced woodsmen. Frank having served but one season in the bark woods
requested of Mr. Sweeney that he and his brother Jerry who was receiving his
first lesson, be allowed to work in the same gang, as he desired to make it as
easy as possible for his younger brother.
Mr. Sweeney granted them this favor knowing at the time that it would be better
for them to divide and each accept an old woodsman as their companion, but not
wishing to confront the boys granted them the request as above state.
Deceased was a model young man of about 24 years of age and had hosts of
friends throughout the county who speak of him in the kindest of terms. The
bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sad
affliction.

Frank Farrell Dushore

Frank Farrell, a sober and industrious young man, eldest son of James Farrell
of this place met with a fatal accident Monday morning. He was employed in the
woods at Mehoopany Creek beyond Lopez by Patrick Sweeney and fell a tree, which
tore a large branch from a maple near by. The limb from the maple struck the
unfortunate young man on the head and he lived but a few minutes. The remains
were brought to this place Monday afternoon and interred in St. Basil’s
cemetery on Wednesday.
Patrick Sweeney, the camp manager for this incident, was the nephew of my
great-great-grandparents Michael and Catherine Sweeney. He was orphaned at two
years old in 1854 when his father, also Patrick Sweeney, died or was killed.
Both are buried at St. Basil's in Dushore.
The younger Patrick later became a teamster in the Connell mines. He died in
1922 after being kicked in the head by a mule the December before that. He was
married to Elizabeth Kinsley of Stowell and they had three daughters whose
descendants I would love to locate.

Mrs. Mary M. Oliver, 77, of Monroeville died Jan. 20, 1995, at Shadyside
Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of
William O’Rourke and Anastasia Farrell
O’Rourke Murray.
She
was raised in Pittsburgh and worked as a hostess and cashier at numerous
nightclubs in the Pittsburgh area. In
1954 she married Patsy Oliver, a band leader and music instructor specializing
in music from the “Big Band” era.
Mrs.
Oliver had numerous relatives and friends in Dushore and Wyalusing and visited
here almost every summer.
She
was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Monroeville.
Surviving
are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marianne) Mitchell of Bethel Park;
three grandchildren, Robert M. Mitchell, Kathleen Robbins, and Lorraine Bogden,
all of Pittsburgh; five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two
brothers, William O’Rourke and Edward
Murray.
A
Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 23 at her church. Burial was in Shepherd Hills Cemetery,
Monroeville.

Father Jordan passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, Far Rockaway, in his
seventy-ninth year. He had been active in all parochial work until ten days ago
when he suffered an attack of grippe. This developed into pneumonia resulting
in his death early Sunday {Editors' Note: Februrary 8, 1931].
Father Jordan was born in La Grange, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania on Feburary
5, 1852. He attended the State Normal School in the Diocese of Scranton. After
graduation, he was appointed a public school teacher in Williamsport, Pa.
In 1888, he entered Mt. St. Mary's Seminary at Emmitsburg, Maryland, to study
for the priesthood. He was adopted for the Diocese of Brooklyn and was ordained
here on June 29, 1893, his 41st year. As an assistant, Father Jordan served in
St. Malachy's Church for three months, in the Visitation Church for seven
months and in St. Raphael's church, Blissville, for six and a half years. On
Dec. 8, 1902, he was appointed pastor of St. Andrew's Church, Sag Harbor; on
June 14, 1904, he was transferred to St. Patrick's Church, Bayshore, and on
Aug. 16, 1916, he was sent to St. Joachim's Church, Cedarhurst, where he
remained until his death.
On Monday the remains were taken to the recovery [sic--perhaps intended to mean
"rectory"]. On Tuesday, hundreds visited the church to pay a last
mark of respect to their pastor. On Wednesday at ten o'clock, the solemn
Requiem Mass was celebrated. Rev. John Donlan, Ph. D., sang the Mass; Rev.
James J. O'Reilly , C. M., was deacon; Rev. Jeremiah King was sub-deacon; Rev.
John Farrell was master of ceremonies; and Very Rev. John J. F. RObisnon, V.
F., preached the sermon. The Right Reverend Bishop gave the final Absolution.
Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrence.
Dean Robinson in his eulogy said there were three parts to every priest's
career. First, prayer; second, instruction; and third, neighborliness. He then
applied the points to the deceased prelate. Seventy-five priests were present
at the Mass. Among the Monsignors attending were Rt. Revs. David Hickey, V. G.;
Francis Ludeke and Peter Quealy, V. F.; Very Revs. John Kiley, John Oppel, John
Gorman and Joseph McClancy.
Father Jordan's death last Sunday was the first of two sad occurrences that
just befell the priesthood of the diocese. It also figured in the sad toll fo
1930, when thirteen of our diocesan clergy passed away. It is a record that far
outstrips that of 1929, when only five priests were called to Heaven for
reward. It is noteworthy that the deaths in 1930 fell to the lot of pastors.
Every one of the thirteen had charge of a parish. This is the normal way in
which things happen [Editor's Note: It may be that the author left out the word
"not" in the last sentence here].
There was something striking about the personal appearance of Father Jordan. He
carried the bearing of the pioneer priests of an older generation. A man
nearing his eighties, a teahcer in his younger days, he has closed a career of
thirty-seven years spent at the altar. His curate days were passed at St.
Malachy's Parish, East New York, and at the Visitation Parish and at St.
Raphael's Parish, Blissville. As pastor, he served at Sag Harbor, Bay Shore
[sic] and Cedarhurst. At the last post, he was head of a thriving parish for
over fourteen years. The new church at Bay Shore [sic] and the convent at
Cedarhurst are the offerings of his zeal to the diocese. He had a real devotion
to Catholic education and took pride in his school.
Father Jordan earned the respect of his fellow priests, the love of his people
and the admiration of his neighbors. Truly he upheld the choicest traditons of
the priesthood. In his grave he lies now, surrounded by the thoughts of his
flock and the incense of their prayers. And it is the wish and the hope many a
priest that his spirit may live on [in] a newer generation of Catholic
clergymen whose very act and every thought may reflect the grandeur of the
vocation which is in them.

Father Jordan was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Jordan, who moved from
Beaver Meadows to a farm on Ringer Hill, about 8 miles from Dushore, about
seventy years ago.
Besides Father Jordan, the family was composed of one brother, Patrick Jordan,
who died about 14 years ago in St. Mary's, Elk county, and two sisters,
Catherine Jordan, who joined ths sisterhood in the St. Joseph Order and was
known as Sister Simpletia. She died some years ago in Philadelphia, and one
other sister, Miss Margaret Jordan, who died at home.
Father Jordan received his early education in the common schools of Sullivan
county and for many years was a teacher in the country
[sic--"county"?] schools. By frugal habits and patient industry, he
managed to pursue his studies at home and later with very little help worked
his way through school and finally entered the priesthood.
Mrs. Charles Cain of German street is a cousin of Father Jordan.

Mrs. Rose Farrell Bahr, 64, of Mildred, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1976, at the
Robert Packer Hospital.
She was born in Dushore Nov. 4, 1911, the daughter of the late John L. and
Frances M. Fries Farrell. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, she was a
graduate of St. Basil’s High School, and a member of St. Basil’s Church.

William E. McDonald died at his home in Coveytown, Cherry township Friday
afternoon, August 25th at the age of 54. He had been ill for some time. He was
a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, a prosperous farmer who will be missed
by his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Anna K. McDonald; his mother, Mrs. Alice McDonald;
two sisters, Miss Betty McDonald of Dushore and Mrs. James Fauls of Ithaca, NY;
three brothers, Patrick McDonald of Mildred, Joseph and George McDonald of
Endicott.
The funeral service was held from the home Monday morning at 10 o'clock with
mass at St. Basil's church at 10:30. Burial in St. Basil's cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Francis and Charles McMahon, Edward Silverstrim, Ivan

Mrs. Lucy Murphy died suddenly Friday afternoon at her home in Mildred
following an attack of indigestion. She was 61 years of age.
Besides her husband, four children survive her, James Murphy, Paul Murphy, Miss
Della Murphy and Francis Murphy all of Mildred. Also four sisters, Mrs. Thos.
Sexton of Renovo, Mrs. Thos McKernan of Albany township, Mrs. William Landback
of Elmira and Mrs. John F. Farrell of Dushore, and one brother, Peter L.
Whalen of Dushore.
Funeral Service was held in St. Francis’ church, Mildred, Monday morning, with
interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Raymond L. Farrell, of Endicott, died Monday, September 5th at the Wilson
Memorial hospital, Johnson City.
Mr. Farrell was born in Dushore, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank H.
Farrell, and for a number of years has made his home at Endicott.
He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Agnes Sullivan of Towanda, a
daughter, Mrs. Margaret Haggerty; a son, William Farrell, and a grandson,
Timothy Haggerty.
Funeral services were held Thrusday morning at St. Katherine's Church, Hillcrest,
Endicott.

The
story of Frank Farrell begins with the death of an old lady in 1975, ELIZABETH MIDDENDORF WATSON. Elizabeth
was born in 1892 in Dushore and was the daughter of Frank Middendorf and Mary
Catherine FARRELL. The Middendorf
family had its own story of emigration and growth in Sullivan County, but that
is for another tale. You can find some of this information at The
Middendorf and Waples Families. In our story, we are particularly
interested in Mary Catherine Farrell and her siblings. She had twelve brothers
and sisters for a total of 13 children. The parents of this large but typical
brood were James Farrell and Ann O'DONOVAN.
Frank Farrell's father James Farrell was a son of Patrick Farrell, of County
Longford, Ireland. Patrick married Bridget Kinsley, and they arrived in Cherry
in 1840. They had seven boys, including James. Patrick died in 1865 at the age
of 64. Bridget's death is recorded in the Sullivan Review for March 3, 1881.
Frank Farrell, born in 1866, was one of these children and therefore the
brother of Mary Catherine Farrell and the uncle of Elizabeth Middendorf. In
1998 or thereabouts, 23 years after Elizabeth had passed away, her
grand-daughter Donna Mclaughlin came into some of her old papers and
possessions. Among those was a poem that Elizabeth had written as a little

I am a land that has seen trouble
and sorrow, many accidents occurred
I will sing to you the latest.
No doubt that you have heard
It was out in Sullivan County
and known to all throughout the land
is that famous lumbering town.
The robins were singing in the
merry month of May
Frank Farrell left his home so
happy and so gay, and little
thinking about the danger
in the forest, trees so tall and sound,
that swept away many a loving son
in that famous lumbering town.
It was on a Monday morning
he began his daily toil.
Little did his brother think, he
soon would lie beneath the soil,
parted from a loving father and
laid by his mother's mound,
never to hear those stately hemlocks
fall in that famous lumbering town.
The brothers a tree were cutting
and to the earth did fall.
It caught a limb of a maple,
Jerry, to his brother did call.
It shot down like an arrow,
and it crushed Frank to the ground
and killed, there by his brother's
side, in the famous lumbering town.
Now, Frank in his grave is sleeping
and the hemlocks creak and wave,
and little we know which one of
us will next go to the grave.
Whenever we visit this sun sweet
tree, that strove by Frank's mound
Who met his grave in Sweeny's
Camp, in that famous lumber town.
When
Donna first sent me a a copy of this handwritten simple poem, I was overwhelmed
with sadness and nostalgia, simultaneously. Sadness for the little girl who
worte this poem, perhaps after a visit to the accident or grave site with her
mother! Nostalgia for the grandfather and great uncles I never knew who cut the
lumber and lived life in the forest when Frank met his fate, and perhaps were
even at his side in "Sweeny's Camp"! While I had no idea where the
camp had been located and even less of an idea the identify of "that
famous lumbering town", it became a personal obsession to find the ghost
of Frank Farrell in the pages of Sullivan
County history. But where
to start? The accident could have happened any time between approximately 1860,
when Farrell families lived in the area and the sons and grandsons of Michael
Sweeney began to cut lumber to supplement their incomes, and the mid-1920's
when the lumber industry died out in Sullivan County.
To
the rescue rode Fred and Jenny Everetts who identified a note in the Towanda
Weekly Review for May 22, 1891. The report said that a Frank Farrell
was reported dead in Dushore at age 25. Another note from the Reporter
Journal, dated May 28, 1891, said that a Frank Farrell, age 25, was
killed last week in Ricketts! So, now we had a good presumption that the
accident happened in May 1891 in or near Ricketts,
PA,, which had to be "that
famous lumbering town". The next thing I did was contact my McDonald
cousins still living in Sullivan
County--Ray and Linda
Karge McDonald. They sat down and began to scan the old records of the Sullivan
Review for the time period of interest. Soon enough they had the whole
story from the old Dushore newspaper archives.

May 28, 1891
A young man by the name of Merrick traveled the nine miles between Ricketts and
Lopez in one hour and fifteen minutes Monday morning to bring news of the
unfortunate death of Frank Farrell. He made the distance on foot over the ties
of the rail way track and reached there in time to send an engine and car after
the body of his fellow workman. A professional runner couldn't have done
better.
Killed in the Woods- Frank
Farrell was killed Monday morning about 7:00 o'clock while chopping trees on
Sweeney's job one mile above Ricketts. He had just cut a large hemlock and in
felling it broke a dead limb about one foot in diameter from a large maple
nearby, and the maple limb struck young Farrell on the head. He died in about
20 minutes, but was unconscious from the first. His brother was alone with him
at the time of the accident. The remains were brought to Dushore on the
afternoon train and conveyed to his father's residence in Cherry. The funeral
and interment occurred on Wednesday at St. Basil's.
Deceased was a highly
exemplary young man, a son of James F. Farrell, aged about 24 years, whose
sudden and violent death has cast a gloom over his large circle of friends and
relatives. Truly, in the midst of life, we are in death.
The funeral of Frank Farrell
on Wednesday last was one of the largest in this place for years. There were
over 80 carriages in line and the church was packed to its utmost capacity by
the Patrick T. _______, group of people.
In
the 1870 federal census for Cherry
Township (page 19B, Reel
# 593-1453), the Farrell family can be found. There was Frank, born in 1866,
and his sister Mary Catherine, future mother of Elizabeth, born in 1868. We also find Anna
and George and an adopted daughter named Ann Donovan, presumably the child of a
previous marriage by her mother. The family was young then and tragedy had not
descended on the oldest son. Clearly from the newspaper story, Frank would grow
up to be a popular and widely respected citizen of Cherry. also, from what else
we know, he joined the Sweeney family in their annual campaigns to the woods as
lumber men. What was it like in the forest? We don't know but we do have some
pictures that give us at least a reasonable impression. Take a look at the next
picture, provided graciously by Don Collins, that shows a turn-of-the-century
lumber gang on break. We believe that at least some of these men are members of
the Collins family, but do not know for sure. What we do know is that the
background, dress and equipment are typical for what Frank Farrell would have
encountered and been familiar with.
