- John C. BUCK, conductor on the State Line
& Sullivan Railroad was stricken with
paralysis, Saturday, as the train was
about pulling away from Barclay depot at
Towanda. He died at his home on Monday
afternoon. He was 44 years of age and
leaves a wife and children. Funeral held
Wed. in Towanda. He belonged to the Loyal
Sock Lodge No. 1854 K. of H.
- Geo. BIRDSEL, of Millview and Miss Mary
BIRD, of Elkland, were married Jan. 2nd
in the road near the bride's residence.
- A. B. WADER and Miss Mary C., d/o H.
DENNISON, Esq. were married Jan. 8th
>at the residence of the bride's
parents by Rev. R. E. Dennison. All of
Geneva, NY
- Horace, youngest s/o H. D. FREEMAN and
Miss Annie FELLOWS, married at the
residence of the bride's parents on Dec.
24th, by Rev. B. H. Hayden, all of Alba,
PA
- Rt. Rev. Bishop Gilbert HAVEN, of the ME
Church died at Malden on Saturday, 3rd
inst, after an illness of several weeks.
- Miss Mary HOVEY of Lyons, shot her father
and then herself last Saturday. Her mind
was unsettled by the death of her lover,
and the tragedy occurred on the day
appointed for the wedding
- John GUNNING, an old man in Centraia, was
murdered on July 26, 1876 by Edward
CURLEY, a Mollie Maguire of Columbia Co.
Curley surrendered to authorities on the
4th inst. and committed to jail at
Bloomsburg for trial.
- The only son of Mr. & Mrs. O. A.
BLACK died from croup on Tuesday, aged
about 5 years. The funeral took place
this forenoon (Journal, 9th)
- John MC DONALD, farmer, ca. 40 years,
residing about two miles south of Cherry
Mills was found dead in the road leading
from his house toward Patrick Wall's on
Saturday morning. An inquest was held and
information given by Mary Collins,
Michael Doyl, James Gilligan, John
Collins, Jno Jordan and Patrick McDonald.
Verdict was his death came by an
appoplectic fit caused my intemperance.
- Fox Center Mr. Henry TRIPP, wife
and babe have taken up their abode in the
Center. Since the arrival of that little
chap, Hand has been the proudest fellow
in town.
21 Jan. 1880
- Two Centenarians Joseph GAINER,
born in Montreal in 1771, married in that
city in 1789. In 1801 moved to Scottsburg
(now Scottsville) Monroe Co., NY. They
had six children, and she died a year ago
at the age of 103. She was 14 when they
married. He has 8 children living, 38
grand children, 23 great grandchildren,
13 great great grandchildren, 8 great
great great grandchildren, 6 great great
great great grandchildren
ninety-six descendants living.
- Lewis ROCKWELL, of Green Twp., Pike Co.,
is 101. He had been sheriff and treasurer
until he lost his eyesight 12 years ago.
His wife is still living, 95 years of
age, the old gentleman had used tobacco
all his life and his wife was an
inveterate tea drinker.
- Charles NEY, formerly of Stroudsburg and
Miss Anna J. FLEMING, were married at the
home of the bride in Forks Twp., Jan. 8th
by Rev. J. C. Moyer
- Miss Nancy SHARP, died in DuShore on Jan.
17th, aged about 87. Burial on Monday at
the Catholic Church.

- Old Mrs. RICHART is quite sick at the
residence of her son, Oscar J. and
considering her age, fears are
entertained that she will not recover
- Joseph E. DIEFFENBAU, of Overton,
Bradford Co., and Miss Laura WANCK, of
Campbellsville, Sullivan Co., married at
Monroetton, 21 Jan. 1880 by Rev. E. H.
Cranmer

- Henry E. FAWCETT and Miss Arvilla MULLAN,
both of Elkland, Sullivan Co., married at
Monroeton, by Rev. E. H. Cranmer, Jan.
28th
- George MILLER, resident of Albany Twp.,
died Thursday, 29th ult., aged 83 years.
He had been a member of the Masonic
fraternity for the past 60 years
11 Feb. 1880
- Tunkhannock young EVANS, the son
of the old man who was found frozen to
death, will be tried at the next term of
court. The son had been directed by the
court to maintain his father and so
placed him in a rude shed built of
railroad ties with no fire. There is much
indignation against Evans for his
inhumanity.

- E. ?. GRIGGS, of Grundy Centre, Iowa and
Miss Esther ST LEON MYER, married at the
home of the bride near Monroeton, Feb.
10th by Rev. Hallock Armstrong.
- Stephen SHORES, of Cora, Smith Co., Kan.,
and Miss Eliza GRIFFIN, of Towanda at the
parsonage, Monroeton, Feb. 11th by Rev.
Hallock Armstrong
- E. M. WILSON, of Wyalusing and Miss
Elizabeth L. SUBER, of Dushore, married
at the parsonage, Monroeton, Feb. 12th by
Rev. Hallock Armstrong
- John Michael REBHALZ, 101 years, died at
Reading on Sunday. He drank lager up to a
short time before his death, and his last
word was "beer". If it hadn't
been for beer, his life would probably
have been prolonged to a green old age.
25 Feb. 1880
- D. D. DeWitt died in Tunkhannock on
Thursday evening from a stroke of
paralysis. He was 62, and a man of
considerable prominence
