West Hill Cemetery

West Hill Cemetery
Shunk, PA

Dec. 02, 2000
Contributed by Elaine Frey
Note: Located just West of Shunk on L.R. 56031.

There are many fieldstones in this cemetery. Some stones are broken, some sunk in the ground. Elaine did her best to read the ones she could. The word "None" is introduced into the listing wherever it is necessary to distinguish between birth and death dates. There are also partial words or parenthetical words in the text that are just as they appear on the stone. Beginning in May 2008 and again on several later occasions, William Albert "Bill" Brenchley sent us a set of photos of grave markers of his Brenchley and related family grave markers. They are linked to those listings below with occasional notes, and we are grateful to Bill for his contribution. We also append an anecdote at the end of the page, wherein we describe how use of the Internet can help resolve historical issues when grave markers themselves may be uninformative.

Editor's Note: Beginning in December 2009, the Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum (SCHS&M) provided an update that includes previously unlisted interments, as well as addtional information and obituaries on several of the interments that we did have. This information was extracted from current and old records in the possesssion of that organization. We have color coded those entries in crimson, and express our sincere appreciaton for this information to our colleagues at SCHS&M.

Note: Alice (Brenchley) King was the daughter of the first James Brenchley the immigrant. Sanford T. King [see marker below] was a son of Alice and Septer King. Sanford was out in the field raking hay with a team and a metal hay rake; the old kind was called a dump rake. He was trying to get the hay in before it got rained on, but he never made it. A storm came and he and the team got a lightning bolt that killed them all. John Brenchley told Bill Brnechley this story in late 2008 when he was 96 and still pretty sharp for his age. John's father and mother were Henry and Lottie ( King) Brenchley.. Henry was a son of Solomon Brenchley.

Note: Per Bill Brenchley, Lorena (Stone) Predmore came home to Shunk with two children and told her Dad she could not live with her husband. Her father, Loren Stone, keep telling her she had to go back and try to live with. This argument went on for a few days, then they found her hanging out back of the house. THis story was told by Bill's Aunt Eudora Brenchley and his mother M Grace (King) Brenchley.

In some local political deal, the Shadduck Cemetery was renamed West Hill Cemetery. The nearby Brown Cemetery was to be renamed East Hill Cemetery, but it seems only half of the deal ever happened since the latter cemetery has kept its original name.

Historical Footnote: In late September 2008, a postcard published by W. L. Hoffmann went up for auction on eBay and was purchased by Mike Clarke, one of our contributors. The postcard presents a view of Hillsgrove Township taken from nearby Proctor Mountain about 1905. On the back is a handwritten note addressed to Mrs. Hulda Gurner of "Watkins, N. Y." The note, postmarked August 15, 1910 from Wheelerville, PA, is from a cousin. Unfortunately, the signature line is missing, so we didn't know at the time who this cousin was. As you will discover below, we may have a better idea of her identity now. However, in any case, the subject of the note was quite useful in helping us to determine a death date at the West Hill Cemetery.

You can see the postcard itself by clicking on these links:

Hillsgrove Postcard 1905--Back

Prior to the posting of this postcard for auction, which Bill Brenchley was fortunate to notice, the listing for this cemetery had no birth or death date for Malinda Kilmer, because her stone was sunk in the ground and the dates were not visible. This postcard refers to the death of "Malinda K", which can be traced, given the date of this postcard, to Thursday, August 11, 2010. She died a few days after suffering a stroke in the Williamsport Hospital, Lycoming County, PA. The services, according to the card, were held at Shunk, PA. It was a fairly simple matter for Bill to ascertain that the only "Malinda K" buried locally was Malinda Kilmer. We also located her in the 1900 Federal Census for Fox Township, PA, where she is identified as Malinda E. Kilmer. That census record also makes it clear that she was the wife, not daughter as suggested on the grave marker abover, of Zackary [sic] T. Kilmer. We updated this cemetery page to show her birth and death years. Here is an example of how the use of the Internet can help with family and historical research.

Bill and Mike Clarke have since returned to the West Hill Cemetery, excavated this stone, and repositioned it carefully so as to show the dates on the foundation. We appreciate their efforts in this regard.

In October 2008, Mike Clarke let us know that he might have some evidence about the author of the above mentioned postcard message. Remember that Mike was the actual pruchaser of the 1905 postcard on eBay. Well, as it turns out, Mike also won the bidding on another postcard at the same time, this one showing a picture of Forksville in 1908. You can see the front and back by clicking on these links:
Forksville Postcard 1908--Front
Forksville Postcard 1908--Back

According to Mike, this second postcard is an identically made card, but it's a panoramic view of Forksville, dated 1908, two years before the Hillsgrove postcard was sent. This second card was signed by a "Libbie" Kilmer. The handwriting is extremely similar on both cards, with some letters being virtually identical. Both cards are filled with the same very tiny script, and both cards were sent to Watkins, NY, but to two different recipients. The handwriting appears to show the difference between a young girl's writing in 1908 versus that same young girl's handwriting two yrs later in 1910. Mike is assuming "young" but maybe we can ascertain how old Libbie Kilmer was in 1908, if we can identify her in the 1900 or 1910 census. Any help would be appreciated.
