East Forks Union Cemetery
Warburton Hill
Forks Township, PA

August 19, 2001
Transcribed by our local cemetery research team
and subsequently updated by
Bob Sweeney and June Howard.

Note: Warburton Hill Cemetery is located on a gravel road # 4013, SR (State Route) 130. The location is named for the Warburton family that originally lived here. There is one stone our transcriber was not sure about because there were two stones for the same person, but different dates for each stone. That individual is Sadie Sherman Grange.

At first in March 2005 and then in April and August 2010, June Howard contributed several pictures of several tombstones and markers from this cemetery. We have linked these pictures in the listing below. Naturally, we are much appreciative of June's efforts in this regard. She is a descendant of the Rowe, Molyneux and Tomlinson families of Sullivan County, and is related by marriage to the Vough family. You can learn more about these families at
The Grain of Salt in Streby...Early Settlers of Lycoming County.

To quote June:

"I have a big interest in Vough genealogy and my dad's first cousin is still living there in Forks township: Helen Grace Vough Treaster. Here are pictures of the markers and stones of some of my ancestors in Warburton Hill. For example, Richard and Ann Rowe was my great-great grandparents. Ezra Rowe was my great grandfather and his wife, Margaret Ann (Molyneux) Rowe was my great grandmother. Here is a Photo of the couple. On another branch, Mary Tomlinson was my great-great-great grandmother, and the mother of my great-great-grandmother Esther Tomlinson Molyneux, wife of James Molyneux. They in turn were the parents of my great-grandmother Margaret Ann (Molyneux) Rowe. My maiden name was Rowe."

June Rowe Howard

Editor's Note: You can learn more about June's Molyneux branch and see more pictures of her ancestors at The Molyneux, Fleming and Whelan Families.

Also, in January 2011, Lyle Rockwell filled in nine missing photos for this cemetery site, including a few listings we had not picked up before. These entries are marked with a "#" sign. Lyle makes a lot of valuable contributions to our site, and we surely appreciate his contributions.

Beginning in November 2009, the Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum (SCHS&M) provided an update that includes previously unlisted interments, as well as addtional information on several of the interments that we did have. This information was extracted from current and old records in the possesssion of that organization. We have color coded those entries in crimson, and express our sincere appreciaton for this information to our colleagues at SCHS&M.

* Editor's Note: Here is the e-mail communication from Dave Carpenter that we received on August 28, 2014:

I am a descendent of Thomas Grange and Sarah Buck by way of his 1st son William. Thomas' brother John is the grandfather of Lyle Grange. William's wife was Anna Anderson and they had a son named William who married Harriet Jane Thomas. William and Harriet's youngest son was Floyd Francis Grange who married Julia Irene Cowley. Their son was Stoddard Martin William Grange who married Lydia May Hamsher. Their oldest daughter is Sue Carole Grange, my mother. I have a tree listed with Ancestry.com (Grange) and can provide a username upon request.

Here also is a response from Larry Pardoe that touches on several Grange family issues:

I'm attaching the Death Certificate record (linked to the name above) for Sadie A. (Sherman) Grange - from the Ancestry.com website, which clearly shows her b. and d. dates as David indicates.

Interesting about "Lyle" name. He was apparently born as John Nelson Grange as shown in 1870 and 1880 census records, but between 1880 and 1900 he picked up the "Lyle" name as reflected in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Federal censuses. (I'm "pasting" in below my notes - including my thoughts as to a possible reason why and when he picked up the "Lyle" nickname).

My notes for John Nelson "Lyle" Grange

"The Grange Family Record for the Family of John W. and Eliza (Vough) Grange" shows his name as John Nelson Lyle Grange.
I haven't been able to determine the reason why John Nelson Grange was also known as Lyle Grange, but having discovered that his first cousin was Lyle Nelson Vough, b. May 30, 1867 and d. October 3, 1871, maybe that has a part in this mystery. Apparently he picked up the "Lyle" name between 1880 and 1900 according to census records.

1880 Elkland Twp., Sullivan Co., PA census shows name as John N. Grange, age 12, b. PA.
1900 Forks Twp., Sullivan Co., PA census shows: Grange, Lisle N., head, b. 12/1867, PA., age 32, farmer & bark jobber, married 5 years.

1920 Wheaton, Milton Twp., DuPage Co., Illinois census shows: Grange, John N. L., head, age 50, b. PA., widowed, Chief of Police - City of Wheaton, Illinois.
