PEACE CHURCH and OLD ZION CHURCH: THE FOUNDERS
Peace Church Cemetery Cherry Township, Sullivan County, PA On a cold winter's day--December 19, 2007. The graveyard is just off Route 220, not far from Route 87 on an old road that runs parallel to 220.

The cemetery at Peace Church contains the mortal remains of many of the earliest German and German-American settlers who came to
what is now Sullivan County. At the time these records were first created, the area was actually part of
Lycoming County. The original church was a log cabin built in 1825 and called "Friedens" or "Peace Church". You can learn more about the actual history of Peace Church, an also see pictures and cemetery listings at:

(3) Peace Cemetery
For many years, an informal rumor among researchers in Sullivan County was that the original
records of Peace Church, Old Zion Church and the early Lutheran community existed in the cellar of an
old church builidng on an open shelf, subject to the whims of time, dampness and potential fire, theft or destruction. We are told that efforts by local historical researchers to persuade the
owners of the facility to permit the creation of a permanent repository for the documents were to no
avail. As a result, many of us feared that the original records of our ancestors
and an essential part of the community's religious heritage would sooner or later suffer the fate of much other old history--to be destroyed, lost or damaged due to
ignorance or carelessness.
A more difficult comment to understand is the suggestion by some parties that publishing these records would
somehow impair the reputations of families or individuals whose members might have had unfortunate marriages, children out of wedlock, or other events in their lives and deaths. Why it should matter to people dead for over 100 years is
difficult to understand. A rule of thumb for historians and for those making records of the past is that events more than 75 years old are in the public domain. Along the same lines, the Federal
government bases its copyright laws on the presumption that anything more than 75 years old is in the public domain. We shall take the same position here. The records of these ancestors are
public documents for the benefit of history and the knowledge of our children and grandchildren. In fact, we are aware that representatives of the Latter Day Saints copied some portion of the records many years ago and that copies can be requested for a fee via the Family History network. However, it would make a lot more sense to make the original records and a translation available locally, for example, at the Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum (SCHS&M) in Laporte, PA. Once a complete set of translations of the documents in the possession of the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Page is available, we will contribute a copy to SCHS&M as well.
Let's digress momentarily to talk about a much more famous case of an excess of possessiveness with historical records. The case we are referring to is the discovery and translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Holy Land in the late 1940s and 1950s. The documents were for many years inaccessible to historians and religious scholars because the organization that held physical control of them refused to permit copies to be made. This situation was corrected within the last ten years when copies and then an online scan of the documents became available. Despite much gnashing of teeth from the those trying to keep control of these priceless records, the world historical and religious community can now see for themselves what the authors of these ancient records lived like and, in translated form, what they thought at a time critical to the history of Western religions.
We do not claim that the records of Peace Church, Old Zion Church and other early records will tell us things of such magnitude. However, they do reveal for us the patterns of marriage, birth, baptism, sponsorship, death and other family interactions at a time when the social and religious culture of northern Pennsylvania was coming into being. We are honored to be able to make the bulk of these documents available here.
For those who can read German, it may also be of value to examine a German language site on the
origins of families in West Prussia, Germany. This site, entitled Familienforschung in Westprussen is managed by Hans-Jurgen Wolf, who would be pleased to answer any questions as best he can.
In 2004, an anonymous donor contributed a copy of some of the original Peach Church and
Old Zion Church records to Bob Sweeney, the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Page administrator.
By the luck of fate, shortly therafter, Bob became aware of DG, a Swiss born
German-speaking resident individual, who was researching the old Kokensparger
families of Sullivan and Bradford Counties. He wishes to remain anonymous. This family, whose surname is also spelled
"Cogansparger", "Kochersperger" and so forth, married with the Keeler family, m
embers of both families living and dying in the area between Laporte and Nordmont.
You can learn more about them
at The Kohensparger Clan.
With the assistance of Carol Brotzman, Deb Wilson and others, we were able to
help DG locate records, graves and other information about his Kokensparger ancestors. He, in turn helped
us with additional detail about the Kokensparger origins in Europe. He also volunteered,
at Bob Sweeney's request, to translate the records presented here.
More or less simultaneously, Frank Thrasher, a descendant of the Thrasher family of old Sullivan County, also came into and scanned an even larger selection of these records. Working on his own and, when needed, with the assistance of a local German born neighbor, Frank provided translations of the records in his possession. You can learn more here about The Thrasher Heritage.
Frank Thrasher With His Wife Dessie Florida 2005
Source: Frank Thrasher
It is through DG's and Frank's invaluable assistance that these documents, written largely by hand in
the traditional nineteenth century Germanic script common to old church records in eastern and northern Pennsylvania,
have been preserved. Keep in mind that the copy from which DG and Frank have worked is often hard to read,
darkened by the copying process, faint in places and likely to be incomplete. Should the individuals who possess
the originals wish to improve or correct our translations, any such contribution would be gratefully appreciated.
Bob has also employed his own elementary German and basic knowledge of the local families to "fill in some blanks"
where DG or Frank could not make a clear decision about a name or place, but was able to come up with a partial reading. You may wish to play around
with reading the original German yourself; if you so desire, you may find it useful to look at this German Script Tutorial brought to our attention by Frank. Another helpful source is the German Genealogical Word List. In any case, we now present the Peace Church and Old Zion Church Records--the voice of Sullivan County's German ancestry speaking through the family records of their church. We will first present in their entirety the translations by DG; then we will present the translations by Frank Thrasher. As mentioned, these files overlap, so duplicate translations are present in each set of files.
Finally, as time passes, we often periodically receive updates or commentaries about specific families or surnames in these records. If the remarks are fairly brief, then it is usually sufficient to introduce an Editor's Note encapsulating the substance of the comments. Where there is an extensive commentary, such as with the Mader ** family, we will both color the surname in bold with asterisks, as just shown, and provide a footnote at the end of the page with the fuller body of the remarks.
The Guggisberg Translations
Editor's Note: The cover or Dedication Page is only partially legible. On this page, the Translator and the Editor have tried to suggest or fill in missing components by using [bracketed] wording. Elsewhere in the following translation, the Editor has provided a bracketed anglicized version of the originally written name on the documents. To be explicit, anything within [brackets] is a comment or
remark provided by the Translator or Editor. Anything else is a direct translation of the text.

Editor's Note: In November 2006, Carol Novak Beverlin wrote to us:How very interesting, Bob. I was named for my maternal grandmother (Caroline Hunsinger Stewart), who was named for her materal grandmother (Caroline Thrasher Landback). Wish my mother and maternal grandmother were alive so I could share this information with them. We always thought Caroline Landback's birth name was spelled with a "C", but the records at Peace Church replicated here show that it was entered with a "K" at her birth. At age 17, on January 16, 1859, she was married at Zion Lutheran Church, Dushore, PA, to Harvey Landback. |

childbirth. Also, on 28th May, 1846, several Hunsingers appear to have joined this
congregation. We have an adult baptismal as well as several others with older
children. |

The Thrasher Translations
Editor's Note: The order of presentation for this group of translations is somewhat different. We will begin with what we call Church Records, most of which appear to be birth or baptismal records. Then, we will present Birth and Baptism Records, Marriage Records, and finally Death Records in that order. For each translation into English, the original record is linked to that translation. You can examine the original by simply clicking on the link. Wherever the Editor or Translator has made a comment that is not part of the translation, the comment will appear in [brackets]. Anything else is a direct translation of the original text.

3rd Tochterlein Maria Elisabetha (Luetzelschwab) was born ?? ???? ?? ??
???? baptized ___ ___ Novbr:
Baptismal witnesses were Georg Boehm and his Wife Christiana born. of Brier Creek
[Note: Tochterlein = Infant or very young Daughter.]
* Editor's Note: Marie Brasington has provided several information points for this entry. As she also observes, this child is without a doubt the
same Maria who will marry Friederich Trunt. In turn, their child will be baptized at the foot of her coffin on February 13, 1846. See entry # 122 below in the Births and Baptisms section.

?? ???? . ?? Kestler Febr:
Baptismal witnesses were ?? Nicolaus Hahn and ???? Elisabetha ??
both of ???.
* Editor's Note: Marie Brasington has also provided several information points
for this entry. As she notes, this is undoubtedly the same Catherine Litzelswope who later married Daniel Reeser. Ironically, the parents were Catholics and are
buried at St. Basil's Cemetery in Dushore [click to see their Grave Marker]. This is an example of how the local
German Lutherans and Catholics collaborated in the common use of religious facilities in the period when Peace Church was the only "German church" in the area.

Baptismal witnesses were ?? Jacob Mueller and his wife
born Beichenbach both of Cherry Towns: Lycom:
*^* Editor's Note: Tony Kaney observed in August 2010 that this entry and the one right below this entry
are in fact for two MORE children of Joseph and Maria Kahni Litzelswope: Susannah and Anthony. Susanna became the wife of George Baumgartner, Sr., and his widow after he
was killed in the Civil War. Susannah and George were first cousins. Their mothers were sisters.
See The Ancestors of Gladys Clara Smithgall
for more specific information on the Litzelswope/Kahni descent. Also, you can read more and see photos of
George and Susanna in The
Baumgartner Emigration.

?????? ??????? ???????
baptized ??? ? ??? : ??
Kestler ___ ___ ___ April
Baptismal witnesses were ?? Georg Eberlin and his wife
born:
[Note: Sohnlein = Infant or very young Son ]
*^* Editor's Note: See commnent with previous entry. Anthony subsequently
married Catherine Bahl, and they had eight children. A younger sibling, Catherine Litzelswope, eventually married Peter Bahl, a brother
of Catherine Bahl, and they had 14 children. So we have the not uncommon occasion of siblings marrying siblings. You can learn more about the Bahl
family history in The
Frawley Collection. The entire web of relationships among Litzelswope, Kahni, Bahl and Baumgartner is laid out in the the Streby History of Cherry Township.

* Editor's Note: In February 2010, Larry Pardoe sent the following comment on this listing:
Some historians show this George as a son of Gabriel Litzelman, b. 1839. But, in fact, that was a different "George Litzelman".
Gabriel's son, George, was born in 1866 and died in 1886 per the Streby History of Cherry.
Bob Sweeney posted the Obituary for George Litzelman (1855-1928) on the Ancestry.com message boards for Sullivan Co., PA on January 24, 2007.
This morning while researching information on the Vollmer (a.k.a. Folmer) family, I accidently stumbled across this
Peach Church Records page, which clarifies just who the parents were for George J. Litzelman.
I interpret this as meaning the father to be George Litzelman (1829-1920) who went on in 1858
to marry Lavina Hollenbeck (1836-1881) and the mother to be Anna M. Bahr (1835-1907) who went on to
marry Henry Reinbold in 1875.

** Editor's Remarks:In December 2007, we received the following comments from William Little,
the administrator of the Little-Wentz Family Site. In addition
to their intrinsic merit for understanding these families, they also throw light on the history of the "Martin"
surname in our county and how it came to be associated with a German-American tradition. You will also
find, on the Peace Church Cemetery and Thrashers
(Old Zion) Cemetery pages, that Mike Clarke has photographed many of the markers for these and related families, for which we
are all very grateful.
Dear Mr. Sweeney:
Our patriarch Conrad Wentz married Sharlotte Mader January 1, 1850 in Sullivan County, PA, I presume in the township of Cherry.
One of my cousins came across your Thrasher family transcriptions from German to English of the Register of the German Lutheran
and Reformed Congregation at Cherry Township, Lycoming Co., PA, Old Lutheran Church Records, translated from German to English,
Peace Church and Old Zion Church, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, 1838 - 1878, that record their marriage as well as a
baptismal record for their first son, Adam Heinrich Wentz, born Sept 22, 1852, baptised Oct 23, 1852. The baptismal
sponsors were Michael Mader and his wife Margretha (Margaret) Mader, the grandparents of the child Adam Heinrich (Henry) Wentz. The Wentz
family later left Sullivan County for Mitchell County, Kansas in 1870. Below you will see a photo of Hannah Elizabeth Wentz,
one of their children, born September 29, 1860 in Sullivan County, at the time of her marriage to John Ailers in 1877.
While the Mader families were living in Cherry in the 1850 Census, they were using the last name of "Martin".
Conrad and Charlotte were noted as part of the Martin household. Sharlotte's parents, the Michael Martin family, stayed in Cherry, while Sharlotte and Conrad Wentz moved down the road to the township of Forks, Sullivan Co., PA by the 1860 Federal Census.
It appears that Michael's wife, Stone, R4, S4, Mawder, Margaret, born unknown, died May 9, 1867, wife of Michael
Mawder, is buried in the Peace Cemetery. After she died, Michael remarried and it is not known at this time where he is buried.
Your photographic team has provided us with digital pictures of Margaret's
grave marker and that which is likely the now illegible marker of her granddaughter, Angeline Elizabeth.
It also appears the Mader family married into the Hoffa families and Messersmith families of Cherry, based on other records that your team has translated. I elaborate in the following separate message.

*********************************
The Mader family immigrated to America in 1836 from Germany. The Wentz family of Bayern, Bavaria, Germany, migrated across Europe, first to Holland and then to England, coming to America in 1848, settling in Pennsylvania.
I believe the Conrad Wentz side of the family must have had ties, all along, in Schuykill, as their second child, Mary Wentz, was born December 15, 1856, in Schuylkill, PA, even though the Wentz family was noted as living in Sullivan County between 1850 - 1870. Charlotte or Sharlotte Mader Wentz, may have gone to her in-laws to have the child, and then returned home to Cherry in the 1850 Census. Later they were in Forks in the 1860 Census where they remained through the 1870 Census.
I have placed links on my site to your Thrasher transcriptions and to your Peace Cemetery link. Your site and researchers' efforts have uncovered what I would equate to as discovering the "Holy Grail" in unlocking at lot of Mader and Wentz history for our family. More extensive information about them and their descendants can be found on my site. We thank you very much.
Obits for Sharlotte Mader Wentz and Conrad Wentz of Mitchell County, Kansas are noted below. They left Sullivan County, after the June 1870 Census, arrving in Mitchell County, KS, October 1870.

Conrad Wentz, died at his residence on Granite Creek, three miles east of Cawker City, Nov. 28, 1882, aged 63 years, five months and 24 days. He leaves a wife and eleven children; five of the children are at home with the mother in needy circumstances. He came from Reinpfalz, Bayern, Germany to Pennsylvania in 1848 where he was married to Charlotte Mader, Jan 1, 1850. He located at this place with the rest of the Pennsylvania colony Oct. 15, 1870. He was greatly afflicted for many years with gravel, and was once operated upon by Dr. D. C. Everson and two other physicians. He was a Presbyterian. This last sickness, with a complication of diseases creating intense suffering, he bore with Christian fortitude and submission. One of simple, earnest faith has gone to rest. May the blessing of God rest upon the bereaved family."
