THE JAMES McNEAL FAMILY
With an Addendum on Family of James Santee and Margaret Cortright

By David Lear

November 2010

Updated by Jim MacNeal November 2019

Preface: In November 2010, David Lear wrote to us concerning the McNeal family records referenced in the records of Old Zion and Peace Church. These records can be found at: Peace Church and Old Zion Church: The Founders. We made some corrections based on his inquiry, but also offered to post his McNeal family records, which we have done so below. The McNeals seem to have had a presence in both Luzerne and Coumbia Counties prior to their appearance in Sullivan County in the 1830s. This type of crossover from one area to another is typical in our county history and indicates once again the common social and economic heritage of the entire northeastern Pennsylvania region. Please address any comments, questions, or additonal information to David Lear, with a copy to Bob Sweeney, the page coordinator.

First Generation

1. James1 McNeal was born in Scotland circa 1744.

He married Sarah Webb 7 March 1772 in Douglassville, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Sarah was born 1 July 1753. She was the daughter of John Webb and Rachel Willets. Sarah died before 16 April 1805.

A brief account of this family is found on page 61 of A History of the Wapwallopen Region, undated, published by the Wapwallopen Historical Society. The account was written by Elma C. Bishop of Berwick. Much of the information was donated to Miss Bishop by unidentified sources and was undocumented.

James McNeal is said to have come from Scotland aboard the ship Catharine, landing in Philadelphia on 20 December 1774, but this is contradicted by a handwritten note on the bottom of page 61, by an unknown person, which reads as follows: "Sarah Webb, daughter of John Webb Jr. and his wife Rachel Willets was born July 1, 1753 and married March 7, 1772 in St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, Douglassville, Pa to James McNeal. She was 'disowned' by Exeter Monthly Meeting in 1772." This is confirmed by Hazel A. Spraker on page 85 of The Boone Family. "4-29, 1772. Sarah Webb, dtr. of John, for marrying out and by a priest." He could not have been married in Berks County more than a year before he arrived from Scotland.

James McNeal and Sarah Webb had the following children:

2 i. Rachel2 McNeal was born 14 October 1772.

ii. Sarah McNeal.

She married Mr. Hughes.

3 iii. John McNeal was born 1 March 1780.

iv. Janet McNeal.

4 v. Samuel McNeal was born circa 1788.

vi. Margaret McNeal was born 13 September 1790.

She married Mr. Shiner.

Margaret died 27 October 1856.

vii. William McNeal.

ix. Wallace McNeal.

Update:

I am the great, great, great, great grandson of James McNeal. This is the very James McNeal you document in your 2010 genealogy, which I discovered recently.
I am sending a photo of his gravesite at Old River Road Church in Wapwallopen PA (see head of the page).
My son, adopted brother, grandson and I placed the Revolutionary War Veteran bronze marker there after receiving it from the US Veterans Administration about 2005 or so.
You may be a aware of this but the half stone to the left of the bronze is that of Sarah Webb McNeal. Next in line is that of Margaret McNeal, presumably his daughter.
James sold his land to James Santee, excepting for an area (forgot the number of rods and perches) wherein lie the bodies of Sarah McNeal, Martin Harter and others. How much of it IS still technically James McNeal's land remains to be reestablished when I re-examine the bill of sale in the Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre. I also recall that I recorded the text of the documents in my notes. I just need to open the safe and re-examine them.
There is a fascinating story to the rediscovery of his actual grave site which occurred about 1975.
Please respond if you receive my email and I can fill in what I know. James' son John moved over the mountain to Black Creek Township where my line of McNeals continued. Many of them are buried at Red Rock Cemetary at St. Paul's Church in Black Creek, PA. I have much history of those McNeals and see that you have traced many of them.
My name's spelling as "MacNeal". My Grandmother born in Germany convinced the entire family, then in West Hazleton, to change spelling to reinforce that we were Scottish, not Irish. I'd love to know if you have a Scotland origin other than Barra. Barra would seem logical as the clan stronghold but there remain questions especially of religion. Barra is majorly Catholic and most McNeals appear to have been pretty strong Protestants. My whole line has been strongly Protestant.

Second Generation

2. Rachel2 McNeal (James1) was born 14 October 1772.

She married James Santee circa 1790. An online source gives the marriage date as 15 April 1794, after the birth of their first two children, raising the possibility that he had an earlier wife.

James was born 25 February 1763 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Valentine Santee and Margaret Funston. He married [2] Margaret Cortright 19 April 1818. She was the widow of Samuel Seely. James died 24 December 1828 in Salem Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was interred in Old River Church Cemetery, Wapwallopen, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

A brief account of this family is found on page 67 of A History of the Wapwallopen Region, undated, published by the Wapwallopen Historical Society. The account was written by Lillie Harter Cameron. It references the Santee Genealogy by Ellis M. Santee. It incorrectly assigns a wife Mary Tucker to his son Robert, who was Rachel's twin. Margaret Tucker married Robert's half brother, also named Robert. See ADDENDUM for James' sons by his second wife, Margaret Cortright.
