MEMBERSHIP RECORDS OF BEAVER MEADOWS

Supplemental Records for Beaver Meadows Church
by Carol Brotzman

Beaver Meadows has a sketchy history of membership records covered here from 1875 to about 2005. The record books were almost always kept in various members home, rarely in the parsonage. The same story kept coming up when Glenn Bennett, Grace Bennett and I were searching for them, lost in a fire. Many have been lost over the years for various unknown to us reasons. The original membership book from 1850- 1875 has never been located. Ruth Culver was the last one known to have had it, and she did have a small fire in her home too. She told me herself that she had no idea where it was. I have compiled these listings from various sources and are subject to errors but I have done my best to strive for accuracy.

MEMBERSHIP RECORDS

Mrs. Mae Fassett compiled the following list of members from records found in the old membership book and with records from Fairdale, Pennsylvania, the parsonage for the Rush Charge and records found at the Wyoming Conference headquarters in Endicott, New. I have no idea if there were other church members recorded with these records as Mae Fassett typed off only Beaver Meadows.  They are now copied as they were recorded. The names in the parenthesis are the maiden names of the young ladies.

Yurgatis, Mary Ann, (Mrs. Dennis Dale Wetherhold), March 31, 1991, Rev William Nelson

Historian’s note:  The obituary of Olin Cobb recorded he was a member of the Beaver Meadows United Methodist Church.  I find no proof. He was born August 27, 1886 to William and Rose Babcock Corby, and raised by his Great Aunt and Uncle Nathan and Josephine Cobb after his mother died.  I have never found his name on church records but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a member. All of Nathan’s families were members!

Historian’s note: I find in the obituary of Mary Schweitzer she is also listed as a member. In our hearts Mary was a member, however she never officially joined the church.  She regularly attended and faithfully played that organ by ear nearly every Sunday from about 1985 to 1994.

Historian’s note:  The obituary of Barbara Clapper Salsman records she was a member.  However I find this information incorrect also.  She helped with Bible school and grew up here as the daughter of Clifford and Helen Brown Clapper but never officially joined the church.

Keep in mind that any person who joins the Methodist Church is required by the church to be baptized.  There were some transposes of dates that have been corrected by the family; otherwise they are recorded as found in the church record books.  An * means the person joined the church here at Beaver Meadows.

Canfield, Frederick  (Jr. maybe), baptism date March 21, 1933, Frederick Canfield maybe the father. The book records “LeRaysville Congregational Junior” where the fathers name is to be listed. Where the mothers name is to appear is “received by letter”, There is a date March 21, 1933 recorded under birth date, Rev Clarence Andrew recorded this information.   Frederick was enrolled for instruction in 1933 and received for membership June 4, 1934 but not here. It records transferred to the LeRaysville Congregational Church.  He was certainly not an infant being baptized.  He is not on any of our numerous membership lists, however he is listed as completing membership classes on the 1924 book page 32 and 33.  That book records his preparatory membership completed June 4, 1934, and records his transfer to the LeRaysville Congregational Church.  So much for the confusion of Frederick Canfield!

* Rev James A Hudgins recorded in Rush Church records that he married in the church at Beaver Meadows 17 year old Miss Lillian Denson of Beaver Meadows and John Sterling of New York on December 25, 1909.

An * indicates that an actual church records exists.  All the other marriages have been collected by myself Carol Brotzman in my quest to find missing church records.

* Historian’s note: There is an old legend here at Beaver Meadows that goes something like this: Doug and Ginny were the first couple to actually be married in the church many, many moons!  It must be true; as they are the first people I can find actually married in the church and not the parsonage, which was the customary procedure to be married in the parsonage or the brides home.

I left the church in August 2005 but I am making an attempt to continue marriages.

There was a wedding April 22, 2006. I was not sure who got married. Reverend Nelson is not able to perform a marriage at this date. He is still recovering from his stroke. I have been told it was one of the Button Grandchildren.

                                                 RENEWAL OF WEDDING VOWS

There were some renewals of vows at our church, which are just as important as a wedding.

Rev William Nelson officiated for Daniel and Joan Clapper DeGaramo June 27, 1992.  They just wanted to share their commitment to their marriage in front of family again.

Rev William Nelson officiated for Kevin Barrett and Amanda Louise Brotzman Kingsbury December 23, 1995.  They were married in Folkston, Georgia by Rev Clancy July 3, 1995.  Kevin was stationed with the United States Army Ranger Unit in Savannah, Georgia at the time of their marriage.  They wanted family present at their marriage.

Rev William Nelson officiated for William and Shannon Kelley Brown September 14, 1996.  A Justice of the Peace married them September 5, 1995.  Bill wanted a minister to perform the ceremony.

Rev William Nelson officiated at the renewal of vows of Marvin and Elsie Crawford Brotzman October 30, 1998.  They were sharing a new commitment to life and God.

Updated in 2013

I helped Laura Herman Benson get in touch with Pastor Vickie Ellis for a renewal of wedding vows in the fall of 2013. This message found its way to me in August 2013:

Hello,

My name is Laura Benson, daughter of Roy Alfred Herman, Sr. (RIP at Beaver Meadows).  With that, I have a very unusual request.

I was married to my darling husband (Zak Benson) 10 years ago, on 22 August 2003, and with a very hectic military life, we were not able to marry before both our families.  We married before my husband's family and 20 days later I sent my new groom off to war in Iraq.  We since then tried to make plans to have a ceremony before my family; however, Washington D.C. life just kept getting in the way.  I made it a point to provide my family the same opportunity to see us marry (particularly my mother and father).

Unfortunately, much time has passed and my father is no longer with us, so the best I could do is seek a place where my mother and father can both witness us renew our vows; Beaver Meadows Church.

Hopefully you could provide me information: Would it be possible to hold a very small ceremony in the church on or about 22 August 2013?  If this is not possible, as I understand the church to be a historical site, can a ceremony be conducted on the grounds?  I am desperate for any information and I would very much like to keep my promise to my family.

I thank you for your time in advance and I hope to hear from you soon.  Laura Benson

I received the following message following the service.

Hi Carol,

Vickie did such a beautiful job with helping us renew our vows for my family. Please thank her if you see her - I would hate to bother her during her mourning the loss of her father. We renewed our vows on 15 September 2013, after 10 years. We all had a good time and much comedy to be had! We even managed to make the Pastor laugh - but I think that was a given, as Vickie is good spirited.

We thank you for putting us in touch with Vickie - otherwise we might not have ever met.

Laura

Rev Ruth Breitweiser provided the following information on her Aunt Isilda Clapper Strickland’s daughter Ada. The wedding of Ward and Ada Strickland Smith was performed at Opposition, Pennsylvania July 19, 1894 by Rev A Schofield, a Methodist Minister from Rush, Pennsylvania. He would have been serving Beaver Meadows too.  Most weddings of that time era were preformed in the home of the bride’s parents, which would have been Nathan and Isilda Clapper Stickland. The groom was Ward Lee Smith, son of John M and Eliza Seeley Smith. Their attendants were LaMar Whitney and Bessie Stone.

*  Historian’s note regarding the Smith family: This information comes from Rev Ruth Breitweiser, Jenella Ryan and Marilyn Bishop.  The marriage was brief, about two years later; on February 14, 1896 it appears that Ada fell. She passed died shortly thereafter.  It is believed she was pregnant the time. Rev Schofield conducted the service. Ada was laid to rest in the cemetery, insight of her child hood home. The lovely headstone in Beaver Meadows records daughter of Nathan and Isilda, died young. Incidentally Ada was their only child. She left behind one living son, Nathan Smith born February 21, 1895.

Records of Mae Fassett record the following area marriages.  However, we do not know the location.  If there is an * it was recorded in the Rush Church record book.

* Elias Marbaker married Emma Cook July 1, 1882

William Bradshaw married Lucy Stevens August 13, 1885

* Arthur Bennett married Lennie Culver August 28, 1885

Fernando C Comstock married Jennie Culver August 4, 1886

Jonas McLaud married Myrtie Sharer May 19, 1891

Harry C Clapper married Bertha King September 14, 1893.  Rev Abraham Schofield preformed this marriage at the home of the bride.

Finding earlier marriages were just a little bit tougher. However from the Civil War papers of James Jarvis Culver I find written proof that James Jarvis Culver married Catherine Potter Culver.  She was the widow of his brother Timothy who was killed in the Civil War. Jarvis and Catherine were married at the home of A (Andrew) Cobb in Opposition, Pennsylvania.  Evidentially this pension file was applied for during the time that Beaver Meadows was known as Opposition.

ROLE OF CHANDLER BIXBY

As for the Official Record: Rev Ezekiel Mintz married James Jarvis Culver and Catherine Potter Culver March 3, 1866 at Opposition, Pennsylvania.  Catherine was the daughter of Rufus and Catherine Johnston Potter.  She was married to Timothy Culver prior to the Civil War. They may have had one child Phinia.  Phinia. A Culver has a headstone in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery, it records Phinia C Culver; daughter of T M and C E Culver died May 7, 1864.  She was approximately 1 year old. James Jarvis was the son of James C and Margaret French Culver.

Rev Ezekiel Mintz was not listed as a supply Pastor here, nor was he listed on the “Roll of the Honored Dead”. I also would like to note that Rev G S Transue the first supply Pastor at Beaver Meadows was not the “Roll of the Honored Dead” either.  The Culver families were traditionally of the Congregationalist faith.  Rev Mintz could have been of any faith. It was a Union Church here at Beaver Meadows. He was a cousin to the Rev Davis Dimock Gray, a Baptist minister.  Religion is a personal choice not necessarily governed by family ties.

I found in the New Bradford County History (1996) that Rev Ezekiel Mintz instigated the building of the Community Church in Herrickville, Pennsylvania in 1869. The church there officially became associated with the Syracuse Methodist Circuit.  The building was formerly dedicated January 15, 1870.  The Wesleyan Methodist took over the church about 1900.  Today the church is one of the few Wesleyan Methodist Churches in North Eastern Pennsylvania. As of this time, I still do not know exactly which faith he was affiliated.

The Wesleyan Methodist Churches were originally organized to fight slavery. The Freewill Baptist Churches were organized for the same principal, abolishing slavery. However, there was a big difference, the Freewill Baptist wanted to keep more control in the local churches and not be governed by large hierarchy.  The Wesleyan Methodist operated basically the same as the Methodist Episcopal Churches.

* Historian’s note with just a little local history included:  No government records have been found as to actually what the Beaver Meadows area had officially been named in the early years. Rev D D Grey refers to it as Beaver Meadow and Bixby’s Pond in his records from 1861 -1865.   He refers to the church as a meetinghouse and a church. None of his records are consistent. Most early church records record the name to be Bixby.  The name Bixby, for Chandler Bixby (1796 - 1868); the man who owned the 900 acres surrounding the land the church was built on in the summer of 1849.  He probably left the provision for the church to use this land as long as they needed.  This was the custom of the day. If the church closed, then the land reverted back to the original owner.  This was the same land that William Whitney purchased from Chandler.  Therefore the legend that William Whitney gave the land to the church is technically correct too.

Chandler and Charles Bixby (probably his brother) purchased 900 acres of the Paul or Peter Lowery, and the Peter Guinip land warrants from Jesse Gilbert of Connecticut on January 3, 1839.  Mr. Gilbert probably never set foot on the land here; he just bought the warrants up on land speculation. Chandler Bixby was in Tuscarora Township prior to 1838, as he paid land taxes in 1838.  A survey map shows Chandler Bixby, Joseph P Chamberlain, and Cyrus McCarthy transferred 50 acres of land near the church to John Clapper on June 8, 1848.  Chandler Bixby deeded land to Peter Clapper on January 19, 1866.  Crafts History of Bradford County, and Bradsby’s History of Bradford County record Peter Clapper arrived in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County about 1840. Deeds were rarely recorded until they were fully paid off. Indentures are sometimes found as to the original date of intent to buy, however none have been found for the Clappers.

Chandler Bixby was a lumberman by trade.  He operated a small mill below the Beaver Meadows Pond. The water ran his mill. On the Barber Census map of 1850, C E (Chandler) Bixby resided just down the road from the Beaver Meadows Union Church.  On the census Chandler and his wife Urania S Bixby had one son Charles age 22 years, born about 1828 residing with them. There was also a daughter Sarah born about 1820, age 30.  They probably had another daughter Mary that married Joseph Maxfield. There may have been more children I have not personally searched this family any further.

A map of 1868, or about that time records the area where the Beaver Meadows Church and Cemetery are located as “Cottage Hill”, Clapper Hill District 6, Tuscarora  Township, Bradford County.  Cottage hill was often referred to as the “Poor House” section of each Township. There are no records to support this being the case here. There is a sawmill in the area where Chandler Bixby operated his mill, but Chandler has gone from the area now. The land belongs to William Whitney.  Rev D D Gray married William Whitney and Mahala Bennett May 9, 1853.   William was the son of Walter and Louisiana Edwards Whitney from the North Flat - Mehoopany area. He may have been in the area on business when he met Mahala. His family was in the lumber business in Windham Township, Wyoming County.  Mahala was a local lady, daughter of Ferris and Nancy Black Bennett.

Stockers History of Susquehanna County, records that on June 6, 1861 Chandler resided in Rushville, Rush Township.  He was a trustee to the newly formed Rushville Presbyterian Church. He supported the building of this church just as he had done at Beaver Meadows. This could give us the inkling that Chandler was Presbyterian. Remember, Beaver Meadows was a Union Church, and the Presbyterians were included on the Charter of the Tuscarora Rush Religious Compact 185- (0). Chandler and Charles Bixby were the first two names on the roster.

Chandler Bixby transferred 300 acres of land to William and Mahala Bennett Whitney on April 8, 1865. They had paid $3,000.00.  Remember, the custom of the era was that deeds were not recorded until fully paid off.  The deed records no mention of a church or cemetery being on, or adjacent to their property.  The maps of 1850 clearly show the Union Church, and in 1868 the map clearly shows a cemetery and Union Church. The Whitney’s transferred some property to Levi Chamberlain in 1871 which carries the description of “whence along the churchyard fence”.  I have not found any particular document setting aside the church or cemetery from Chandler’s deed, however this property was improved upon in the time that Chandler Bixby was the owner. There must have been an amicable agreement between the Whitney’s and Chandler Bixby as no deed to the Beaver Meadows Cemetery Association was ever recorded until March 2, 1965 when Ralph Culver secured a deed. He had papers with him when he escorted the Earl and Emma Friedeman family to the Bradford County Court House to secure the church and cemeteries future. The property where the church sets had changed hands many times. Dutton Cobb, E W Cobb, George McLaud and Harry Merrill were just a few of the owners. The previous deeds only recorded “reserved for burial grounds”.  There was never a mention of the church building anywhere. Not even on the deed in 1965.

* Historian’s note regarding Chandler Bixby: Chandler was born in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York the son of Asahel and Clarina Smith Bixby.  He married Urania Stackhouse.  The 1850 census records they had two children still living with them in Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Charles age 22 years and Sarah age 20 years.  The whole family had been born in New  York.  Chandler moved from Beaver Meadows to Rushville, Rush Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania after he sold his home to William Whitney.  When he moved to Angelica, Allegheny County, New York is not known.  He died there in 1868.

* Historian’s note regarding the Post Office:  Dutton Cobb petitioned for the first Post Office on July 2, 1886.  He listed the area we know as Beaver Meadows as “Champion Mountain”. This is the only place I ever find Beaver Meadows known as Champion Mountain. Lena Clapper did not even mention that name in her interviews with Mary Schweitzer.  The first mail carrier was Thomas Shaw.  His duties were to deliver the mail to the post office. Then the residents came and picked up their own mail.  No personal deliveries as we have today.  The Post Office at Opposition was located in several places during its short existence.  The Raymond Cobb Store across the Beaver Meadows Pond Dam was probably the best-known place. Dutton Cobb’s home was the first site. Dutton was the Post Master but the rumor was that his wife Ella was the first Post Mistress. That site is now the former summer home of Phyllis and Earl Freideman. They inherited it from their parents Earl and Emma Freideman.  We can thank Earl and Emma for working with Ralph Culver in securing a deed to the church and cemetery lands in 1965.  The last place was supposed to be the Chester Culver home, the place the Dave and Debbie Camp family call home in 2000. Aaron Culver was the Post Master in 1900.There was alleged to be another site across the road from the Jacob Sova property too.  I have found no further information on that site. Stanley Parys told me it might have also been across the road from the Walter Sharer home, again I have no further information.  The Post office was only in existence from about 1886 to 1905. I have not found an exact closing date yet. Rev Ruth Breitweiser has letters post marked from Opposition. Mary Learn (1922-1998) also had a large wall map that belonged to the Post office at Opposition.

The story of how the name Opposition came about was recorded by Mary Schweitzer from a personal interview she had with Lena Smith Clapper.  Dorothy Bennett also records the same information in The New Bradford County History. There were many meetings and discussions on what to name the area, Clapper Hill, Culver Hill, Beaver Meadows, Bixby, and probably more names. Aaron Culver jokingly said “name it Opposition because of all the disagreements”. The name stuck, and they did. The Post Office was first approved as Champion Mountain July 21, 1886, and later changed to Opposition.  I don’t have a definite date of that transaction.  The church minutes record the name to be Opposition from 1891 to 1900.  The name Beaver Meadow was recorded on the secretary minutes prior to 1891 and after 1900, however letters record Opposition as late as 1905.

Historian’s note regarding the Aaron Culver family:  Aaron Culver, April 15, 1831 - February 12, 1925 married Estelle Buck May 3, 1839 - March 16, 1937. Estelle was the daughter of Israel and Eliza Wells Buck.  She would have been a cousin to Nancy Black Bennett, wife of Ferris Bennett.  Their only child Chester was born August 6, 1869.  He  married November 18, 1890 to Wavie Bennett. She was born June 27, 1872, the daughter of Davis Dimock and Cornelia Very Bennett.  Wavie had such a pretty unusual name.  Her name was chosen because she was born on a sunny, breezy day. There was a warm breeze on the wheat field. It made it look “ Wavie”, therefore the name Wavie was derived from the action of Mother Nature on the spring wheat crop.  Chester died December 4, 1937 and Wavie on November 13, 1954.  They were laid to rest with the Culver family directly behind the church in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery.
