Dr. John A. Morrison
In the death of this citizen of Chester County, which occured at his residence in Cochranville on July 26, in his 91st year, not only that community but a wider circle felt the passing of one whose pure life had exerted an influence for good.
Dr. Morrison was born in Coleraine Township, Lancaster County, January 31, 1814. He was of Scotch-Irish descent, his greatgrandfather, Gabriel Morrison, coming from Ireland to this County in 1735. In 1837 the subject of this matter was graduated from Jefferson College and some years later from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. For 67 years he practiced medicine in Cochranville and neighborhood, having for serveral years a drug store in the villlage.
He was elected a member of theThirty-second Congress over his Republican competitor for the office, Jesse C. Dickey of New London. At that period of the nation's history there were many notable men in Congress, the sole survivor of it being Hon. Galusha A. Grow of Pennsylvania. On returning from Washington the Doctor spent eight years in the United States Appraiser's Store, Philadelphia; five years as drug examiner, three years at the head of the department.
He was a strong Presbyterian and had been a member of Faggs Manor Church for many years, 30 of which he was a Ruling Elder, occupyng the office at the time of his death. He was also a Director of the Parkesburg Bank for 30 years, serving until his death occurred.
