A Lancaster Soldier�s Death
Henry A McCrabb, formerly of Co. K, 79 Regiment died at the National Military Home in Montgomery County, Ohio, April 25, aged 40 (45) years. Information of his death was sent to A. C. Leonard by Michael Doebler, formerly of this city.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Thomas, of Kirkwood, was the scene of a jolly company of young folks on Wednesday evening, when their cousin, Miss Eva May McCrabb was married to Mr. Randolph W. Swisher. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Robert H. Kirk, of the Union Presbyterian Church, and the wedding march was played by Mrs. Addie Groff. The maid of honor, Miss Abbie McCrabb and Miss Anna Groff. The groomsmen were Samuel Bock and Isaac McCrabb. After the festivities incident to the occasion were over, the happy couple were tendered a serenade by the Kirkwood Cornet band. Many happy remembrances in the way of useful and ornamental presents were received.

Died on Thursday morning of typhoid fever, Frank, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob McCrabb, aged 16 years, whose home was Liberty Square. Services were held on Sunday at 1 p.m., by Revs. Crowell and Gollie at Marticville M.E. Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. The unexpected death of this beloved boy has cast a gloom over the community. His genial and pleasant manner made him many friends. Although young in years he had good qualities for business and helped his father skillfully in the milling trade. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community. The funeral was very largely attended.

Fred, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob McCrabb, Liberty Square died on Monday from the dreaded diptheria. The funeral was held privately on Wednesday. The father was away with his invalid wife at Williamsburg near Allentown. This is a severe stroke to the parents as they buried their oldest son last April.

Mary M. Byers died on Wednesday night at her home, No. 44 South Christian Street. Death resulted after a long illness from cancer of the stomach. She was 62 years old, a native of Martic township and a resident of the city for several years. She attended St. Paul�s Reformed Church. Her children are Mrs. Elizabeth Wertz with whom she lived; Jacob McCrabb, John, Abner and Lawrence Tshudy.

Prominent Citizen of Drumore Township Dies of Heart Trouble
Levi Martin, a prominent citizen of Drumore Township, died at his home, near Liberty Square, Thursday afternoon of heart trouble, aged 74 years. Mr. Martin had been ill for some time.
In earlier years, Mr. Martin had served as Tax Collector and School Director of Drumore Township, where he had been a resident and prominent citizen for many years.
He leave his wife, who was a Miss Gochenauer before marriage, and the following children; Percy, who operates the family farm; Ivan, chaplain at Fort Howard, MD; Miss Edna, a teacher in the Mt. Joy High School; and Mrs. Grace Humphreys, teacher of the home school � Oregon.
Funeral services will be held from his late home at 12:00 o�clock. Internment will be made in Chestnut Level Presbyterian cemetery.

Mrs. Jacob McCrabb
Died Early This Morning at Her Home Near Liberty Square
Mrs. Mary E. McCrabb, wife of Jacob McCrabb, died at her home, near Liberty Square, Drumore Township, early this morning. She was the daughter of David Miller and mary Martin Miller and was born November 26, 1853. She was therefore 72 years, 7 months and 24 days. She was twice married. Besides her husband she leaves the following children: John Martin of Holtwood; Ira of York; Ellis of Potter County; Aldus of Holtwood; Mrs. Martin Bishop of Drumore and Mrs. Clifford Martin of New Jersey.
The step children are: William and Maris, of Ohio; Loyal of Pugh�s Mill near Lancaster; and Philip of Drumore.
The deceased has been in Lancaster General Hospital recently, recovering from a broke hip sustained falling. Tuesday night she had another stroke, her death occurring 3 o�clock.

Philip McCrabb
Philip McCrabb, thirty-eight, well known miller of Liberty Square, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at his home of heart trouble. He had been ill since Tuesday. He was the son of Jacob and the late Lizzie Lefever McCrabb and is survived by his wife, Ruth C. Matson McCrabb and these children, Esther L., Jacob A. and Donald Edwin at home. His father and these brothers also survive: William and Maris of Dayton, Ohio, and Loyal of Lancaster. He is a member of Washington Lodge, No. 156 Free and Accepted Masons of Quarryville and Lancaster Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
The funeral will be held from the home at 2:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Quarryville cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Dora Grimm McCrabb; 3 children, William and Maris of Dayton, Ohio, and Loyal of Lyndon.; sixteen grandchildren and a half brother, John Tshudy, of Lancaster.
Mr. McCrabb was a member of the Rawlinsville M.E. Church, Washington Lodge No. 156, Free and Accepted Masons of Quarryville, the Knights of the Mystic Chain, of Conestoga Center and the Rawlinsville K.G.E.
Masonic services will be held at the Reynolds Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with interment at the Greenwood Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Lititz Couple Marks Golden Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Loyal M. McCrabb Sr., 446 W. Marion St., Lititz, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday. In honor of the occasion, their children will entertain them at a drop-in party today. It will be held at the home of the McCrabbs� daughter, Mrs. Joseph Ebersole, Lititz R3.
The couple were married on Oct. 9, 1920. She is the former Helen M. Burkins of Drumore. Mr. McCrabb recently retired as the manager of the Lancaster Milling Co., where he worked for 48 years.
The McCrabbs are the parents of four surviving children. They are: Mrs. Ebersole; Loyal M. McCrabb Jr., Lancaster; Paul B. McCrabb, Refton; and J. Harold McCrabb, Reading. There are 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Control Pitcher Learned Craft the Natural Way
Lester McCrabb made his mark with Philadelphia A�s in 1941
Frank McCrabb, a Quarryville dirt farmer working a 219 acre farm owned by County Commissioner Albert Fritz on the halves, remarked one day to a friend who was standing by: �Lester must be throwing again.�
�What?� the friend asked cautiously.
�I said I can tell Lester has been throwing at the tomato posts again. They are oozing tomato juice and shredded chunks. It�s Lester�s favorite pastime when I�m not in sight.�
Lester McCrabb, born in Peach Bottom in 1918, was a young upright then. Unthinking and quite unintentionally, he was developing the marvelous control that would reward him one day in baseball as one of the fine control pitchers of his time.
But Lest insists he didn�t have the remotest thought about control throwing, whatever that was. �I started to throw at targets when I was two years old,� he re-called. �It became second nature to me, a kind of fun thing.�
Later, however, another strange thing occurred when Lester filled out a school form asking him what he wanted to be in his life. He wrote: �A professional baseball player.�
�I wasn�t even thinking about baseball when I wrote that,� said Les. �I simply had an urge to say it for some unknown reason.�
He was around 12 or 13 then, attending pre-Colerain High School, an in a real baseball sense wasn�t doing any more thinking about playing the game than before. But he was still winging away at the tomato posts, to the chagrin of his daddy.
It was still the principal chore in his young life.
He got to be in his late teens, around 17, before he began to show some interest in the diamond sport. He began throwing baseballs around instead of tomatoes, and it wasn�t long before he got into the organized game.
His tomato career had done a job on him, and he finally awakened to the joy of the national pastime. In a short time Strasburg got him into a suit and he was pitching in the Lanco League at $10 per week. This was 1935-36.
Les also acquired a patron saint, the next step, as he came under the tutelage of Ephraim Seldomridge of Quarryville. And a remarkable career began to take shape.
Seldomridge wrote to Connie Mack, owner of the Philadelphia Athletics and one of baseball�s icons of the day, laying out the potential of the youngster from Quarryville. Mack invited Seldomridge and his prot�g� to Philadelphia for a look-see. Connie watched while Earle, his son, caught Lester. That was in 1936, and after the command performance McCrabb was signed to a contract with Williamsport, an A�s farm.
For the next three years he made the grand tour of the minor leagues. He debuted in the South Carolina League, going 17-2. Williamsport recalled him and he trained with the A�s in Lousiiana; he was then sent to Greenville, S.C. of the South Atlantic League. He divided 1939 between Williamsport nad the parent A�s, where he was 1-2. He then went to spring training again with the A�s in Anaheim, California.
During the off-season he was asked to pitch in Havana by Mie Guerre, who managed and caught for the Cubans. Les went 6-0 and received $3,500, proportionately his biggest payday to then.
Despite this seeming merry-go-round, which wasn�t unusual for members of the Mack family, Les had some bright and productive years in baseball.
He had two mini-careers with a pair of teams in Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Royals. He had several excellent stays with the Athletics over a period of ten years or more, and his various periods with the Lancaster Red Roses were first class.
In 1940 the Macks sold Les to Toronto where he became one of the top performers on the Leafs� pitching staff. One of his first big wins in Toronto occurred in his first outing there when he beat Tony Lazzeri�s Buffalo team, 2-0. He finished the season 10-11.
