John Marker


Mustered In: 02 Nov 1863 into Co K, 171st Pa Drafted Militia, for 9 mos. service.

His Company was commanded by Capt. Geo. C. Schultz, served in the line of duty in North Carolina in Infantry Div.  In Jan. 1863 he became ill, he contracted rheumatism caused by exposure.  Was not in hospital but was treated by Regiment Surgeon.  On Aug. 28, 1879 he enrolled for Invalid Pension at 50 years of age.  The same John Marker - who being duly sworn according to law, was signed for pension on Oct. 24, 1862.  He was honorably discharged at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Aug. 6, 1863.

John Marker was born 25 Sep 1829 in Milford (now Black) Twp., Somerset County, PA, son of Judith (Tschudi) and Henry Marker Jr. He married Rachel Meyers 17 Jun 1858 in Gebhart (now near New Lexington, Somerset County), and they settled on a farm on (now) Handwerk Road in Upper Turkeyfoot Twp.

His personal description is as follows:  height - 5'9", dark complexion, black hair, grey eyes.

He died 23 Sep 1883 at his farm near Kingwood in Upper Turkeyfoot Township, (the paper received had this statement) died of Kanser of the Stomac and other complications.

Rachel Marker made application for widows pension: There were three children under 16  years of age at home:  Iranues Marker - born Aug. 4, 1875; Daniel S. Marker - born July 23, 1877; and Minnie Grace Marker - born May 15, 1883.

Rachel Marker lived on the farm until her youngest son, Daniel S. was ready to farm for himself.  She sold the farm and bought a home and lot close to Kingwood.  This home was located on the Whipkey Dam Road; She lived all her life in the same township.  She became very ill July 1, 1919, and was cared for by her daughters Mrs. Minnie Schaub and Mrs. Elizabeth Faidley.  She died 07 Nov 1919.

John and Rachel and several of their children rest at Kingwood Lutheran Church Cemetery.
