Ephraim
was born June 7, 1831, in West Providence Township, Bedford
County, PA. He was the son of William J. Wilkins and Susannah
Clark. In the 1850
census he is listed as being 19 and still living at home in West
Providence. Around 1853 he married Mary Ann Price, a daughter of
Abraham Price and
Hester Ann Hetzel, both of East Providence Township, Bedford
County, PA. In 1863 Ephraim's residence is listed as West
Providence, however in the 1870
census and until his death on November 13, 1907, he is listed as
living in East Providence Township. He was a farmer by trade. He
joined Company F,
99th Regiment of the PA Infantry as a private. It is listed on
the muster roll that he enlisted February 25, 1865, at
Chambersburg, PA, for a one year
enlistment. He is reported as having blue eyes, dark hair, and a
fair complexion. It was noted that he was drafted from West
Providence troops,
Bedford County, and joined the draft rendezvous in Carlisle, PA,
May 16, 1865. His age was 33 when he was mustered out on July 1,
1865, near
Washington, D.C. He had four children born before he went to
war, and four after returning home. His seventh child, David
Harvey Wilkins, born in
1872, was my grandfather. Ephraim died on November 13, 1907, in
his home at the age of 76. I currently own the farmhouse that
was his. He is buried at
Union Memorial Cemetery near Mench, PA.
