Chauncey was born 15 Apr 1837 in Brothersvalley Twp,
PA. His enlistment papers state that he was a cooper before his enlistment
and that he stood 5/9", had a dark complexion, sandy hair and brown eyes.
He enrolled 11 Aug 1862 at Berlin, PA in Co F of the 142nd Reg. PA Vol.
to serve 3 years. He was mustered into the service as a private on 25 Aug
1862 at Harrisburg, PA. Chauncey was wounded in action at Gettysburg on 1
Jul 1863 in the right forearm by a piece of a gun thrown by the explosion
of a shell. Was taken prisoner the same day and after the course of five
days was allowed to return and was then sent to the hospital. He was at McClellan
Hospital in Philadelphia from about 10 Jul 1863 until about 1 Dec 1863. Although
he returned to his unit after recuperating, he would suffer from the damage
to the muscle and bone for the rest of his life.He was discharged near Washington
D.C. on 29 May 1865.
After returning to Somerset County, Chauncey married Susan Walker on 27
Aug 1866. They lived on a farm near Pine Hill and had five children. Susan
passed away 5 May 1876, just 22 days after giving birth to their youngest
child. On 8 Sep 1877 Chauncey married to Eliza Jane Hay with home he had
one child.
On 16 Apr 1879, Chauncey applied for a pension due to his disability. The
pension was granted as was a request for an increase later in his life.
He passed away due to heart failure on 12 Mar 1904 at his home in Pine Hill,
Somerset County, just short of his 67th birthday. Chauncey and his second
wife are buried in the Mt. Zion (Hay's) Reformed Church Cemetery in Brothersvalley
Township, Somerset County. His first wife is buried in the Fritz Cemetery
near her parents.
