The PARROTT family has links to Australia and possibly England. At last count some 11 convicts (PDF link above) of this family were transported to Sydney from either England or Ireland mostly through connections with the PICKETT family which is linked to the Parrott family via my paternal grandmother, Rachel. Her brother, Sgt Major Mark Pickett, although born in Australia, fought in the New Zealand Contingents of the Boer (South African) War from 1901. He was mentioned in despatches and there are quite a few references on Papers Past - a site which digitises past New Zealand newspapers among other things. His brother - Hugh - is of some fame as well but for different reasons - link above! But he also served in the 1914-18 War with the Tunnellers. This link to his Family Tree Entry will fill out the rest of his life beyond the trial for murder story in LINKS above.

On the maternal side....

The FITZPATRICK side of the family came from County Tyrone, Ireland to New Zealand (Canterbury) during the 1860's and 1870's and settled in the Balcairn (North Canterbury) and Banks Peninsula area, my gggrandfather migrating to Taihape and the Wellington/Palmerston North area.  A woven story of historical fact and fiction is available HERE as a PDF - 18 pages of a typical Irish family, in this case Fitzpatricks, and their emigration to New Zealand (Canterbury) in the 1860's. The McKEOWEN (McKeown/McKeon - among other spellings) connection although real is still somewhat tenuous at this stage as it has been impossible to find the patriarch's origins in Ireland. At this date he is thought to have come from King's County (now Offaly). With the latest issue of Irish Catholic Church registers I have been able to find his father's baptism and some siblings. Research continues (Aug 2018).
