biography

WILLIAM L. KENNEDY. - - The businessmen of Grove City include among their number William L. Kennedy, the city's present burgess. He was born in Mercer county on February 20, 1846, and the history of his parents and their family is recorded more at length in the sketch of his brother, James S. Kennedy, elsewhere in this work. William was but two years of age when his parents established their home on a farm in Cool Spring township, Mercer' county, and there the little lad grew to years of maturity. When a young man of twenty years he moved with his parents to Sharon, Pennsylvania, and there learned the painter's trade, which he has made a life work. During his early years he obtained but a limited educational training, and from early youth he has been obliged to earn his own way in the world, unaided by position or influential friends, but in spite of all difficulties and hardships he has made his life a success.

In about the year of 1882 Mr. Kennedy and his wife joined her people in Missouri, but his stay in that state was of short duration and unprofitable, and returning to Mercer county he has lived since in both Sharon and Middlesex. While at the latter place he was honored with election to the office of constable. Since i888 he has lived in Grove City and followed the painter's trade. He has ever been held in the highest esteem by his fellow citizens, and in 1906 they honored him with election to the office of burgess of Grove City, a position he has maintained to the present time. In his political affiliations he is a stanch Republican.

In Sharon, in 1873, Mr. Kennedy was united in marriage with Margaret E. Carter, a daughter of Lewis Carter, formerly of Clearfield counts', Pennsylvania, and they have three children: Maude, the wife of F. G. Connell: Arthur M., a successful dentist in Fayette City; and Carl C., a well-known druggist in Grove City. The family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
