Newspapers were an important medium for recording events. They covered topics of interest to those who lived locally as well as important events on a state or local level. Many mistakes were printed in newspapers because of circumstances under which information was obtained and the rapidity necessary in writing to meet publication deadlines.
Genealogical events and records to look for are: Historical events, marriages, deaths, obituaries, probate sales, and sections and columns of local interest.
At one time there was a law in Pennsylvania that required all county courthouses to collect and store newspapers locally. Some were finally placed in historical societies, some destroyed, and some still remain. The following is a listing of newspapers having been published past to present.
