S.N.P.J. Borough

S.N.P.J. was established in 1978.

S.N.P.J. Borough's official name: Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota (Slovene National Benefit Society)

Slovenska narodna podporna jednota, the Slovene National Benefit Society, is an ethnic fraternal benefit and social organization for Slovene immigrants and their descendants in the United States. Founded in 1904, it is headquartered in suburban Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA near Imperial. SNPJ publishes a newspaper, Prosveta.

According to the 2000 U.S. census, it has a population of zero, although the borough itself counted 14 residents in 2003.

The society applied to have their 500 acre recreation center in western Pennsylvania designated as a separate municipality in 1977. The S.N.P.J. borough was created so that the society could, among other things, get their own liquor license. North Beaver Township, Pennsylvania, the municipality in which the center was originally located, restricted the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

S.N.P.J. once had the distinction of being the least-populated borough in the state until Centralia's now-infamous underground mine fire had made the place unsafe to live in and most of the residents moved out due to the state taking over Centralia via eminent domain. Previously, Centralia's population count was similar to that of New Beaver and New Wilmington, which lie within Lawrence County, as does S.N.P.J.

The borough is more of a recreation complex than a borough, and has 60 rental cabins, 115 mobile home slots, an artificial lake and is open to the public as a summertime resort and facility for bingo, weddings and dances. Being a member of the society gets you a discount on the events.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles, with 20 acres (0.03 sq mi) of the area covered by water.
