Map of Original Surveys near the Mouth of Lost Creek compiled by Phillip E. Bedient, PhD
The map below contains information about the land around the mouth of Lost Creek where it empties into the Juniata River. My ancestors named Wright and Reed settled there when the first settlements were made in that region. I constructed the map from surveys copied in the PA Land Office in Harrisburg many years ago. I hope the information will be useful to researchers. I have more information about the Wright and Reed families in my files.

In a 1990 paper about the family of Colonel John Armstrong [1717-1795], Raymond Martin Bell gave the following dates that are pertinent to anyone interested in the early settlement of the Lost Creek Valley in what is now Juniata County, PA.

When the land office opened in 1755 there were a number of persons who were ready to acquire land in the Lost Creek area. A warrant for 963 3/4 acres was issued by the land office on Feb. 3, 1755 to John Smith and William Buchannon. This warrant was obtained on the first day that land in this part of Pennsylvania could be obtained.
Later in that same year, 1755, the trouble with the Indians erupted, forcing a hiatus in the settlement of lands in the region. It was not until 1762 that other persons were beginning to seek land along the Juniata River and in the Lost Creek Valley. Among these was Azzur Reed, ancestor of the author, who on June 4, 1762 obtained a warrant for land on the Juniata in Fermanagh Twp. in what is now Juniata County.
A word about how one went about getting a grant of land in colonial Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Land Office in Philadelphia was the place to start. Here one filed an Application for a piece of land of a specific size and paid an appropriate fee. The Application served as an Order to Survey to the Surveyor of the County in which the survey was to be made. Since the Juniata River was west of the Susquehanna River, these Applications were recorded in Philadelphia in a volume called West Side Applications. When the Surveyor of Cumberland County received the warrant he would then find an appropriate sized piece of land, survey it, and send the Survey to the Land Office where the Survey was recorded in a Survey Book. The final step was for the applicant to accept the Survey and pay for the land, whereupon the land would be Returned and a Patent would be issued. The Patent itself was often a large piece of parchment that became the property of the patentee. A copy of the Patent was recorded in a Patent Book at the Land Office. The original West Side Application Book, the Survey Books, and the Patent Books are now (2000) housed in the Land Office in Harrisburg where they may by studied.
The process described above often took years to complete. Warrant rights were sold, warrantees died, and the Indian difficulties postponed the early settlements. For example Azzur Reed obtained his Warrant in 1762, but he died in 1764 leaving a will devising the warrant right to his son John Reed. In 1774 John Reed purchased the warrant rights for the adjoining tract that had been warranted to Moses Reed in 1762. The patents for these two tracts were issued to John Reed in 1783.
