The Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame
by Mary Yanity
In 2014, the Historical Museum proudly
announced the opening of a new, permanent exhibit. The Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame began in 1984 with the purpose of recognizing and remembering individuals who had demonstrated athletic excellence in the past. The Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors accepts nominations from its members yearly for athletes who have played in Indiana County sports and achieved success. At an annual banquet in May, those selected are inducted into the I.C. Sports Hall of Fame. The number of inductees each year can vary from four to nine.
A plaque for each year has the inducteesí names and the sports in which they participated on it and a separate picture for each individual is placed around it. For many years, these plaques and pictures hung in the Fire Mountain Restaurant in Town Fair Plaza; however, with the closure of this business in 2012, they needed a home.
The Historical Society has taken the plaques and pictures, cleaned them and mounted them for display. Six years at a time can be displayed and these years will rotate. For a related exhibit to accompany the Sports Hall of Fame, the Historical Museum would appreciate receiving any older sports related artifacts used in Indiana County events. They do not need a connection to the Hall of Fame. Balls, gloves, programs, bats, golf clubs, pictures, tennis rackets, hockey sticks or any related objects are desired. Articles can be donated or put on loan to the Society. Any questions, please call the Society at 724-463-9600. The display can be viewed during regular business hours, Tuesday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm.
