Girl Scouts - Homemaking
Contributed by Bill Klauk
The newspaper clipping below was provided by Bill Klauk from his mother's scrapbook. Bill's mother, Helen (Koenig) Klauk, is the tall girl to the viewer's right. It is estimated that this picture is from 1935 basis the information in the caption which has been transcribed below the picture.
Pictured here is a group of Scouts from Troop No. 18 with their captain, Mrs. W. G. Scarborough, doing a part of the hostess merit badge requirement. This is one of the more interesting badges as it teaches the scout to be a charming and gracious hostess knowing what to do, and do it right, as well as what not to do. In the checkup of the National Badges and Awards committee it was found that in the home-making badges the hostess badge ranked the highest with 13,454 badges being presented in the United States in 1934.
