Descendants of Sylvester and Lewis R. Sherrod are on the search for photographs of the boys from the Sherrod Hill community west of Edinboro, PA who served in the 83^rd PVI, Company D, during the Civil War.  

We know from the Sherrod brothers’ letters that all of them sent photographs (tintypes, ambrotypes) home regularly and were tent mates.  We hope that some may have survived, passed down in the families or in 83^rd PVI collections.  Photos were sent to families with the following surnames:  Sherrod, Lick, Goodell, Groger, Meabon and Patterson.  These families farmed along Sherrod Hill and Eureka Roads in both Elk Creek and Washington twps. from the 1820’s on.

Sylvester Sherrod – Enlisted August 1861, killed at Gaines’s Mill, VA a year later.  Sylvester sent home several “likenesses” of himself in the distinctive Chaussuer/Zouave uniform.  The Sherrod brothers are buried in the Sherrod/Greenfield cemetery.

Lewis R Sherrod – Enlisted August 1862, killed at Petersburg, VA June 1964.   Lewis was a fifer in the Drum Corp and brother to Sylvester.   He sent photos to Olive Lick, John Goodell and Clarissa Meabon.

Alfred “Alf” J. Sherrod – Enlisted August 1861, a cousin, survived the war and was last found in the 1880 census living with Sherrod relatives in Bradford, McKean Co., PA.

Charles W. Groger – Enlisted August 1861, died from wounds received at the Battle for Little Round Top, Gettysburg July 6, 1863.  The Groger family is buried in the Sherrod/Greenfield Cemetery.

Samuel H. Patterson – Enlisted August 18, 1861, son of James Patterson.  Corporal Patterson was killed at Malvern Hill in July, 1862.

Lorenzo “Loren” N. Patterson – Enlisted August 18, 1861, son of James Patterson, was wounded at Gettysburg, then killed at the Battle of Laurel Hill in May, 1864.  Brother to Samuel.

Sanford Vorse – Wounded in 1864 at Peebles Farm, promoted to SGT. and mustered out with Company F at the end of the war. He had one known brother, Filander Vorse, who farmed in Elk Creek twp. until 1880.  Filander and Martha Vorse had children named William, Charles, Mary, John and Harriett.  Sanford disappeared after the 1870 census.
