Rebecca (Jones) Brace, Early Teacher in Greene Township
The following is extracted from an email sent by the contributor:
"I have been examining the Greene Township material. Maybe I can help with
one tidbit. In Samuel P. Bates' History of Erie County, PA, the next to
last paragraph you have online mentions one of the first teachers was
Mrs. Brace from Connecticut. This person was Rebecca (Jones) Brace."
"She was the daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Adams) Jones of Barkhamsted, CT.
and Richland, Oswego Co., NY."
"Rebecca, born 7 July 1782, married Stephen Brace at Litchfield, Herkimer Co.,
NY on 3 February 1803. Stephen Brace, born 26 August 1780, was the son of
Levi and Joanna (Cooley) Brace of Tolland, Tolland Co., CT. He was a Methodist
minister. Both Stephen and Rebecca died at Greene, Erie Co., PA. He died
3 September 1846, while she died later, 26 March 1866. They had 5 children,
but only two died in Erie Co.: Solomon Billings Brace at Boston, PA in 1838
and Stephen Jones Brace at Greene on 2 May 1868."
