SECOND GENERATION

#7. Hannah SMITH was born 17 Jan 1795 Westmoreland Co., PA, the 6th child and 3rd daughter of Thomas and Sarah SMITH. Hannah died 3 June 1869 Greenfield, Erie Co., PA, and is buried in Little Hope Cem Erie Co. PA. She married about 1817 JOHN WILSON born 1794 in Northumberland Co. PA; died 10 Nov 1853 Kaneville Kane Co. IL; buried in Kaneville Cem Kane Co., IL.

John Wilson came to Greenfield August 9, 1798 with his parents, William and Elizabeth (Hunter) Wilson. A few years after the Wilsons arrived in Erie Co, Elizabeth’s parents came from Ireland and settled in Greenfield township also. Mr. Hunter died Sept. 28, 1825, ninety-three years old. Elizabeth Hunter, his wife, died Aug. 7, 1831, eighty-eight years old. They are buried in the Middlebrook Cemetery. William and Elizabeth Wilson’s second son, James, born March 14, 1800, married Eleanor McNair, daughter of Nancy Smith McNair, Hannah’s sister.

John and Hannah lived on a farm in Greenfield township, just north of Venango. Wilson Road goes through the village of Little Hope. They belonged to the Middlebrook Church as did all of the Smith and Wilson families. The census of 1850 shows sons Thomas and John Jr and daughter Catherine living at home and James with his family living on the neighboring farm. William and Thom are in Illinois. Three years later John and John Jr leave for a visit to Illinois and never return. They died within a week of each other, presumably of disease. They are buried there with William’s family.

Children of Hannah Smith and John Wilson

#7a. 1. William W WILSON born 3 Oct. 1818 Erie Co. PA, died 6 Oct 1868 IL. He married Hettie SMITH, his first cousin, daughter of David Smith. She was born 22 Aug. 1821 in Venango, Erie Co, died 30 Apr. 1887 IL. They are buried in Kaneville Cemetery Kane Co. IL. William and Hetty were married by 1843 when their first child was born in IL. William is on the Kane Co IL census of 1840. He probably went to Kane Co. in 1837 with his cousin Thomas McNair. Hettie could have accompanied them but more likely went with her family in the spring of 1840. William farmed a claim he purchased in Kaneville in 1843. William and Hettie had four children who all died young. They also adopted Lottie Adams. John and Frances Adams were probably neighbors. Frances died in 1854, the second daughter Elizabeth died in Oct 1859 and John died Dec. 1859. William’s will lists his farm property of 320 acres in Kaneville and a lot in the city of Aurora; provides for Lottie’s care and leaves his estate to Hetty and their only living son Walter. Hettie continued on their farm after William died. Walter died in 1870 before the estate was settled. When Lottie died in 1884, Hetty was left alone for the 3 remaining years of her life.
