FATHER MARINO was born in Cerisano, Province of Cosenza, Italy, June 24, 1876, the son of Peter and Angela (Pellegrino) Marino.  At the age of eleven years, he was brought to America by his father, his mother had been taken away by death, who located at Alleghany, Cattaraugus County, New York.  After attending the parish school, taught by the Franciscan Sisters, the young Louis returned to his native Italy, in 1891, where he spent two years.  He returned to this country and began his preparation for Holy Orders at Winsted, Conn., from whence he at length returned to Allegany, N.Y., and completed his college course at Saint Bona’s [St. Bonaventure University], graduating in June, 1902.  Having made due progress in the neighboring seminary, Major Orders were conferred on him by Bishop Fitz-Maurice, at Niagara University, in December, 1904; and on June 14, 1905, he was ordained priest by Bishop Colton of  Buffalo in the seminary chapel at Alleghany.  There he also celebrated his first Holy Mass on June 25 (the Feast of Corpus Christi).

            Reporting to Bishop Fitz-Maruice, by whom he had been retained, he was sent to Sharpsville, where he spent several months.  He was then sent to Sharon, and next made acting pastor of St. Anthony’s at Farrell.  While engaged in the latter parish, Father Marino was severely burned in a gas explosion at the place of his residence.  The effects of the accident rendered him a comparative invalid for nearly three years, and left him considerably scarred about the face and body.  Early in 1908, however, he again entered into regular service and was appointed to Saint Paul’s, Erie, where his record of achievement outlined in the history of the parish is rich and full.
