The information below was provided by Evelyn Baker. It is a newspaper notice which appeared in The Cosmopolite November 16, 1840. A reprint of the notice was in the September 15, 1892 edition. Evelyn has also indicated that included with the newspaper notice was a banner for The Cosmopolite which reads: "Girard, Pa.      MURPHY & NICHOLS, Proprieters Office: Over GULLIFORD' S Hardware Store." Murphy & Nichols ran the Cosmopolite & their office was located upstairs over Gulliford's Hardware Store. We, the undersigned, promise to pay the amount set opposite our respective names to :

For the purpose of paying for a lot, & building a meeting house for the use of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the east village of Girard, in Erie County, Pa. The said house to be built not less than 35' on the ground by 45'. The conditions of payment to be as follows:

Materials & work when called for:

Grain: 1/2 in March A. D. 1841

1/2 in January A. D. 1842

Cash: 1/2 in September A. D. 1841

1/2 in January A. D. 1842
