The name Cymry, pronounced �Kim-ry�, is a term signifying com-patriots or fellow-countrymen. The name Cumberland, or land of Cymry, appears in the Saxon Chronicle as �Cumbra-land,� the land of the
Cymry, as the Welsh called themselves. As early as 1730, approximately a dozen or more families of
Welsh ancestry settled in the area now known as New Cumberland, Pennsylvania following the exit of the Shawnee Indians who traveled farther west.

Cymry Chapter was organized on June 8, 1960 and is in the Appalachian Section of the National Society.
