Greendale Cemetery
Incorporated March 1, 1852, as the “Meadville
Cemetery,” by a group of the town’s leading citizens, the name
“Greendale” was adopted one year later.
The original plot was 53 acres.
Judicious planning and constant care have made it perhaps the
most beautiful cemetery in western Pennsylvania.
The stone arched gateway was built in 1865, the
receiving vault in 1874, and the superintendent’s home in 1875.
W. E. Battles is
superintendent, succeeding H. L. Kightlinger
whose 29 years in the post ended last November [1937].
Control of the cemetery is in the hands of a board of some 30
corporators who select a board of managers.
The board of managers is composed of
E. P. Cullum, A. L. Ballinger, J. George Heckman, E. W. Lawrence,
and Merwin Shryock.
E. P. Cullum is the president of the Greendale Cemetery; A.
L. Ballinger, vice-president; John E.
Reynolds, treasurer; and A. E. Dunham,
secretary.
