He was a man of large culture, being master of languages, having been educated in the best institutions of Scotland. He was an educator of high attainments and long experience. The subject of our sketch was born in Boston, Massachusetts, December 23d, 1824, but when only two years of age came with his parents to Jamestown, Mercer county, Pennsylvania. With an education acquired at the common schools and under the eye of his father, we find him after nineteen years of age teaching, successively at the Franklin, (Pennsylvania,) Academy, at Hartstown, Greenville and Jamestown. Determining to adopt the medical profession he commenced his studies with Dr. Wm. Gibson, of Jamestown, Pennsylvania. In preparing himself for the profession he became a student of the Eclectic Medical College of Cincinnati, and graduated in 1853. Locating at Mosiertown, Cussewago township, he has continued practicing there, with the exception of, perhaps, a year's absence. The Doctor has served frequently as School Director in Mosiertown, but has never sought any public office, devoting himself strictly to his profession. He Is a member of the Eclectic Medical Association.
