"John Gore came to Roxbury, Mass. from Southampton, England in 1635. He married in England Rhoda _____ , date unknown and he died 2 June 1657, leaving 2 sons, John and Samuel, and 3 daughters, Mary, Abigail and Hannah. His children, John and Mary, were born in England; all others were born in Roxbury, Mass.

John arrived in Roxbury with his wife Rhoda on April 18, 1637 and was one of the few men in the colony honored with the title of "Mister". He is mentioned in a list of landowners of the year 1643 as owning 188 acres. When he landed at Boston and passed on Boston Neck to Roxbury, "Mrs Gore was carried by two men, as the ground was wet and swampy. Arriving at Roxbury, the men stopped with their fair burden on a small hill, when Mrs Gore, who was much fatiqued, exclaimed "This is Paradise", and the spot was henceforth named "Paradise Hill". 56

John Gore was a Freeman 18 April 1637; a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638 and their Clerk in 1655. For many years he also served as town clerk. The Records of Roxbury, now in the city hall, Boston, are in his handwritting and in that of his son who succeeded him. 56

From the records of Rev. John Elliott it appears that Jone Gore and Mrs. Rhoda Gore, his wife, were admitted to the first church in Roxbury but the date of their admission is not clear, yet from other entries it was apparently in 1636 or 1637. (Roxbury Church Records).

John Gore left England at the time of the great religious upheaval which induced so many men to leave their county. That he was a Puritan is evident by the quaint Scriptural names he gave his children which had never before been borne by any of his name.

John Gore and his father do not appear to have been estranged for his father, Richard Gore of Southampton, made John, by his will dated 6 January 1643, his residuary legatee and sole executor. As appears from an entry in the Notarial Records of William Aspineall, Notary, Boston, 23 December 1644, John Gore sent a letter of Attorney to Joseph Browne of Southampton, England, Halster, to prove the Will of his father and to execute it for him.

John Gore bought land in Salisbury, the deed to which was made to his widow, Rhoda, 20 August 1658. He is mentioned in the landholders of Roxbury in the year 1643 as owning 188 acres and was taxed 15 s. 12 personal and 6s. 3 d real estate.

The Gore homestead is described as containing 4 acres west of Stoney River. A brick block now is on the site and the house which was town down in 1876 of course was not the original homestead, but one of houses subsequently erected on the site, for in 1693 the original house and barn were not worth repairing.

The present day Gore Street crosses part of the original Gore estate.

In his will, John Gore states ..."The reason why I did not give my eldest sonne John Gore and daughter Mary no more is because they having received their proportion before, and my will is that if any of my three younger children dye before marriage these 3 should be one anothers heirs." Inventory, 22 June 1657, of estate of John Gore was 812.07.6 , a considerable estate for the time and considering that he had been in the Colony but 20 years. Also before death he had advanced probably their shares to his son John and daughter Mary. " 34

She long survived her first husband and she married 3 times after the death of her first husband, John Gore, she dying in 1693. It is safe to say she was born in 1610 since she deposed 19 May 1655 as age 45 (Suffolk Deeds). She married successively after John's death, Lt. The Journal also shows that during the years 1710 to 1718 he grafted for Mason, mowed for Dwight and Peter Morse, hoed for Matturin Allad, pruned for Mr. Payson, made a wall for Capt. Chandler, went to Uncle Perrin's raising, worked for Uncle Samuel Morris, Lt. Eastman, Goodman Peake, Ben Roth and Cousin Deming, went to raising and a lecture in Pomfret, was present at the ordination in Pomfret of Rev. Ebenezer Williams, attended Ebenezer Davis' funeral, and was at "Goodman Rice's burial". He did surveying, dressed flax for neighbors, sold bed cords, sledded cedar out of the Cedar Swamp, and "one day went to town, had saw mended, got peas at Holmes' and rolled my logs at Holmes' Mill." He "went down to the Bay," sold flax, visited relatives, and attended lectures in Boston and Roxbury.

Research: Samuel Gore came into the sole possession of his father's common lands in 1716. It is probable that he removed from Roxbury and settled in Norwich, Connecticut or its neighborhood between 1715 and 1719. He was Captain of the 5th Company of Trainband in the East Society of Norwich, commission May 1721.

On 2 March 1712/13 he was elected one of the Fence Viewers of Roxbury and 3 March 1717 was one of the Surveyers of Highways.

"Samuel Gore 1761-1834, served 1779-81, as private and sergeant in Penn. Militia. In 1833 he was placed on the pension roll of Bradford Co., Penn. where he died. He was born in Conn." 13

"He was one of the few who escaped the Wyoming massacre (July 3, 1778). He was also an actor in the Pennamite and Yankee troubles. The first winter after he settled in Sheshequin he was obliged to go, via Wyoming, to the Delaware river to winter his oxen, no means of doing so being nearer. His money to carry him a journey of one hundred and fifty miles was an English crown. The paths (there were no roads) were impassable, nearly, but on the fourth day he arrived at Wyoming, where he rested and prepared feed for his cattle for the rest of the journey, by twisting hay into large ropes and fastening them around their bodies and necks. He packed his wallet with Indian johnny-cake and slung it upon his arm, and entered the great 'dismal swamp.' The snow was two feet deep, and the weather severe. On the second day he had a creek to cross so deep that footmen could not pass without wading. Mounting one of his oxen, he attempted to ride across, but the anchor-ice hit his legs, his steed played him false, and left his rider to make his way out as best he could. He was now four miles from any house, his clothes were frozen, and he alone in the depths of the forest, and night approaching, He used to say he consideed his chance for life more hopeless and deperate than when pursued by yelling savages at Wyoming.27

"Brother of Judge Obadiah Gore .... and removed with his father and brothers to Wyoming. In May 1777, he joined the company of Capt. Aholiab Buck, was in the battle of Wyoming and had a thrilling escape. Following, he served as a Minute Man in the Valley, under Capt John Franklin and others until the close of the war. He had been an active participant in practically all the struggles in the Wyoming Valley, where he remained until his brother moved to Shehequin, when he came with him. He settled the farm of now D.W. Chaffee. His life in the wilderness was one of great privations and hardships, but they were as heroically met as was the enemy in fighting for Independence. Mr. Gore was for many years a Justice of the Peace, noted as a wise and just magistrate. He became an extensive land owner, spent his last days in comfort and died May 2, 1834, lamented by all. "30

"In 1784, Obadiah and Samuel Gore and Arnold Franklin came into the settlement (Shehequin), from Wyoming." 27

Research: Notes from the Gore Family ........see34 .

"Samuel moved to Sheshequin, Pa. with his brother, Obadiah, Jr., about 1783 and owned a farm adjoining which at one time was considered valuable, but some parts of it, as well as land of other farmers in Sheshequin, suffered greatly from floods and backwater from Towanda Dam.

Samuel did not bring his family to the settlement until two years later, about 1785. The first winter after he settled in Sheshequin he was compelled to go to Wyoming Valley to Delaware River to winter his oxen, no other means being nearer. The paths were impassable nearly, but on the 4th day he arrived at Wyoming where he rested, and prepared feed for his cattle for the balance of the journey by twisting hay into large ropes and fastening it around their bodies and necks. He packed his wallet with Indian johney cake. The snow was two feet deep and the weather severe in the great dismal swamp. On the secon day he had a deep creek to cross; mounting one of his oxen he attempted to ride across bu the anchor ice hit his legs -- his steed played him false and left the rider to get out as best he could. It was four miles from any house.. his clothes were frozen, and he in the depth of the forrest with night coming on, and he said he considered his chances for life were more hopless than when pursued by yelling savages.

For many years Samuel was Justice of the Peace and is said to have been one of the best Magistrates in the County. He was a man who retired and arose early. He was a Revolutionary Pensioner and after his death his widow received a Pension. Sarah: Spouse Notes: "After her husbands death, which occured May 2, 1834, Mrs Gore, his widow, received a pension, She expected a small amount only, and was very much surprised when $600 were counted down to her. With a sorrowful countenance and desponding tone she said, 'I don't know what I shall do with all this money. I don't want it.'" 27
