Other members of this household included John Townsend 18, Leister Townsend 16, Elizabeth Townsend 24, Augustus Townsend 25 ("Idiotic"), Hannah Limbeck 30, Edmond Hubbard 25, and Mariah Hubbard 24. The household appeared to comprise two farms. The household of Charlotte Townsewnd (WF 55) is only two farms or houses away from the household of David & Polly FINK. It is tempting to assume that this Wm. Fink is a son of David and Polly Polk, but his presence in the nearby Townsend household is unexplained.

Birth: ca 1866

1.7a Asa Charles FINK*

Birth: Sep 1867, NY (Reported in 1900 US Census)

Death: 30 Apr 1940, Medford, Middlesex Co., MA (Dearborn Hosp.)

Burial: 3 May 1940, Oak Grove Cemetery; Medford, Midlesex MA

Occ: Carpenter, Contractor, Farmer

Educ: Lived in Custer City, PA, & Bradford, (McKean Co) PA

0. ACF Sr. was born ca. 1869 in NY (US Census, 1920 and 1930), and was living in the Castle Garden and Driftwood area of Cameron Co., PA, in 1889 and 1893, where Edward and Lena were born. Earl reports that his family moved from Custer City to Bradford, McKean Co., PA in 1906. Earl Fink reports in "Sunrise and Sunset," (p.25) that by (ca. 1916) "Father had remarried and set up housekeeping in Bradford and took me there to live with him. My stepmother was a kind lady and I was once more happy to be with my father. My new mother had a son of her own, three years younger than I (b. ca. 1901), so I did have a companion." ACF later moved from Bradford PA to Buffalo NY ca 1917 to take a new job (Sunrise & Sunset, p. 27). But his 2nd wife also developed tuberculosis and her declining health made it difficult for her to care for her own son (from her first marriage) and her stepson (Earl) and so she moved in with her mother, in Bradford, PA, while ACF was away, working in Buffalo, NY (Sunrise & Sunset, p27, 33). Ca. 1917 ACF rented a larger apartment in Buffalo and sent for Charles and Asa and Earl to come and live with him in Buffalo (Sunrise, p.28). These were the three youngest and unmarried sons. The oldest son, Edward, had m. Grace McKimm in Salamanca in 1916; Lena had m. H.S. Wasson in Niagara Co in 1915; Roy had m. Gladys Gifford ca 1913 in Salamanca and they were ca 1916 living in Hornell, NY, near Arthur, who had not yet married Grace but had a good job and was self-supporting. When the US entered WWI in 1917, Charles enlisted in the Navy and ACF got a job making propellers with Curtiss Aircraft. ACFs 2nd wife d. ca 1918 in Bradford, PA. Subsequent to this, ACF met, courted, and in 1919 m. Eva J. Newhall, an employee of the PA RR (whom he may have met while travelling back and forth between Buffalo and Bradford, PA.) They continued to live in Buffalo, NY. In 1919 Asa fell to his death while washing windows at a factory in Buffalo (Sunrise, p34-35). After Asa Jr. died in March 1919, Earl was sent from Buffalo to visit his brother Edward, then living in Driftwood, Cameron Co., PA, (near his Uncle Eugene) during the summer of 1919. Later in the summer of 1919 he visited Roy and Gladys in Smethport, McKean Co, PA.

Earl reports that, around the fall of 1919, Evas hearing deteriorated and she resigned her job with the PA RR. Hev further reports that in late 1919 ACF & Eva began to dream of owning a farm in New England, and so travelled to Boston to look for farms and to visit Evas parents. Her father George Newhall (1920 Census) was a Fireman in Boston and her parents lived in the Boston Suburb of Allston, MA. Ca the fall of 1919 ACF & Eva bought a 15 acre farm with an apple orchard some 5 miles outside of Franklin, NH, in Salisbury Township, Merrimack County, NH. In the 1920 Census ACF is listed as a farmer in Salisbury Township, Merrimack County, NH; and in 1920 ACF says that he and both of his parents were born in NY; however in the 1930 US Census in Medford, Middlesex, MA, ACF states that although he was born in NY, both of his parents were born in PA.

0. US Census for 1900: On 1 June 1900 Anna Lilley & Asa Fink were living at 210 Pine Street in Port Allegany, McKean Co., PA. Anna was born in "Aug 1870," in NY, as were both of her parents. Asa was born in "Sept 1867" as were both of his parents. She and Asa have been married for 14 years. Five of Annas six children still were living on 1 June 1900. The 1900 Census clearly states that these five eldest children (Edward G., Leroy C. Lena E., Arthur F. and Charles D.) were all "born in Pennsylvania." Since we know that Asa and Anna were married in late April or early May of 1886, they probably moved from NY to PA very shortly after their 1886 marriage, and were demonstrably in PA by 1889.

0. US Census for 1910: On 22nd April 1910, Asa & Anna are living on (#95?) Seward Avenue in Bradfod, McKean Co., PA. Asa is age 43 and Anna is age 40, and both have been married for 23 years. Seven of Anna's eight children are living and all seven were born in "PA."

1. US Census for 1920 has Asa C. Fink, aged "51" (thus b. ca. 1869), "b.in NEW YORK," as Fink, Asa C., living in Salisbury Township, Merrimack County, NH."

2. US Census for 1930 has Asa C. Fink, aged 62, born in NY, as head of a household and living in Medford, Middlesex Co., MA.

Asa was living in Medford, MA, in 1931, at the time of brother Marvins death.

3. US Census for 1940 has not yet been released.

4. Asa Charles Fink, living at 51 Lila Avenue, in Medford, Middlesex County, MA, died at 2:00 PM on 30 April 1940, in Dearborn Hospital, Medford, Mass. On 3 May 1940 Asa was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, also in Medford. G.M. Allen of 49 Dudley Street in Medford was the Funeral Director. Asas widow, Eva J. Newhall, then 63 years of age, stated that Asa was born in Cooperstown, NY, was 72 years of age, and was the son of David and Polly FINK. Eva did not know where Asas parents were born, nor his Mothers (Pollys) maiden name. Eva reported that Asa did not have a Social Security Number, but worked as a Jobbing Carpenter. Asas physician, Dr. Nicholas Iovanna, stated that over the previous four years he had treated Asa for Chronic Myocarditis and Arteriosclerosis. Medford Death Certificate #473, Registered #228, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Vitsal Records #004243.

Edward the oldest always remained in Pennsylvania. Earl, Roy and Arthur lived in northern suburbs of Boston at the ends of their lives: Stoneham mostly I think. Charlie lived in South Berwick Maine. My Mom thinks the birth order of the boys is Eddie, Roy, Arthur, Earl, Charlie, and Asa Jr."

1.7a.3 Leroy ("Roy") Clarence FINK

Birth: Jun 1892, PA

0. Roy Fink was living in Salamanca, Cattaraugus Co., NY, where he had m. Gladys Gifford, ca. 1913. Daughter Elizabeth Fink was born there ca 1914. If we presume that Roy was about 20 at this time, then perhaps he was born ca. 1894, and this would make him the second born child to Asa Fink & Anna Lilley. Roy & Gladys and Elizabeth lived with Gladys widowed mother, Mary Gifford. Earl Fink lived with Roy & Gladys from ca. 1915. In 1916 Roy & Gladys moved to Hornell, NY, to take a job near Arthur. Earl remained behind in Salamanca and lived with Mr. & Mrs. Austin. However, sometime after 1916 Roy and Gladys moved to Smithport, PA, where, in the summer of 1919, they were visited by Earl (Sunrise, p37). Later in 1919, Roy and Gladys moved from Smithport, PA, to another nearby town (Sunrise, p. 38). In the 7 April 1930 Census, Leroy C. Fink (age 37 on 7 April 1930) & Gladys (age 33) are living in Foster Township, McKean Co. PA, with dau Elizabeth (age 15), dau Letha (age 12), and son Earl (age 5), working as a painter with his "own account."

1. Sue Anne (La Pierre Bottomley) [email protected] wrote on 10 Nov 2002 to state that: "The Fink family were all in the construction buiness: carpenters, painters, owners of wallpaper stores. My Mom thinks the birth order of the boys is Eddie, Roy, Arthur, Earl, Charlie, and Asa Jr. Interesting that the 'junior' would be last. So it seems to me that the photo was taken before Asa Jr.was born."

Birth: 24 Sep 1893, Castle Garden, Cameron Co., PA (Near Driftwood, PA)

Death: 25 May 1982, New London, NH

Burial: 28 May 1982, Wheatfield Cemetery; Shawnee, NY (Outside Tonawanda)

Occ: Schoolteacher and Nurse

0. Cindy says that Lena taught Elementary School in Ceres, PA, 1912-1913, and subsequently attended Alfred University, September 1913-June 1915. Lena also worked part-time as a Convalescent Nurse and stayed in the homes of people who were ill. In this capacity she was employed in the Wasson home in Mapleton, NY, caring for someone who was sick, and in this way she met and fell in love with and later married Henry Seymour Wasson.

1. Wasson Notes Say Lena was born on 24 August 1893 in Castle Gardens, PA. 1920 US Census says Lens was 26 years of age on Census Dates of 12-13 Jan 1920. So born on 24 Aug 1893 fits.

2. 1. Sue Anne (La Pierre Bottomley) wrote on 10 Nov 2002 to state that: "Now to the Lena puzzle. My Mom feels certain that Lena's mother died when she was in high school, about age 16, because she dropped out to stay home to do the housework. Then she decided that was not the best plan, and went back to high school and graduated on time."

3. On 2 September 1907 Lena was living at 27 Seward Avenue in Bradford, PA, and received a postcard from her highschool friend, Theo Green of Port Allegany, PA, depicting the P.A. High School, which they both attended.

1. [email protected], 26 May 2002 (Cindy Wasson & DDS Mike Monica): Hi All - My dad no sooner got into the nursing home when he fell & broke his hip. He is now back in Kimball Med. Center in Lakewood, and scheduled to have hip surgery on Mon. 5/27/02 at 9a.m. Can't believe this happened! See you all soon. Love,Cindy

2. Cindy, 11 June 2002: Hi Margie & George, My dad is doing very poorly. He has been sick since the end of April, and has really gone downhill rapidly. He is now in a nursing home and not eating or responding much. So the outlook is not good. Aunt Lindy sent us a copy of Aunt Anne's book, which we are enjoying very much. Hope you all are doing well. Love, Cindy

3. Cindy, 13 June 2002: Hi Everyone, My father died tonight at 5:55 p.m. He died peacefully, and it is a blessing that he is not struggling and upset. Let me know if you want the details of the service.

4. Cindy Wasson: "Eulogy for My Dad," Lakewood NJ Lutheran Church, 5:00 PM, Sunday, 16 June 2002: Eulogy for my father, David H. Wasson; June 14, 2002

" My father was very special to me, and I know I was to him, too, even though he often forgot my actual name. This was not just a recent occurrence, but something that happens in many large families. I am the third child of six, and the second girl. Dad referred to my mom as Sweetheart or "Sweets", my older sister Janet as "Big Sweets", my younger sister Pam as "Little Sweets" and me as "Middle Sweets". He would be safe just calling any of us Sweets. Anyway, I knew he was always happy to see me, and we developed a very special relationship over the past couple of years when the roles became reversed and we had to switch roles, with the children sometimes feeling like the parents.

My dad had many wonderful qualities, including enthusiasm and energy for life; an adventurous spirit in wanting to explore and learn new things, confidence in his ability to be independent and capable or meeting a challenge, and outgoing and sociable, enjoying his friends and meeting new people. I remember my dad always being an early riser, a morning person like myself. He liked to go out for a hike or walk every day and would find things wherever we happened to live. We lived in several places around the country. Dad found fossils and sharks teeth, arrowheads and Civil War bullets, and thousands of stray golf balls on golf courses, which he would clean up and sell for a few dollars a box. Growing up in the Depression with very little money and losing his father as a young man, my dad had to take on heavy responsibilities early on in life. He came home from college after his dad died and went to work to support his mother and three younger sisters. My Aunt Lindy, his youngest sister who was 13 at the time, told me that they rarely saw my father, since he worked from 3 to 11 at a factory, and the girls were all asleep by the time he got home. But my aunt said that my dad always made sure there was coal in the furnace so they kept warm.

My dad worked very hard his whole life, raising six children, and for a long time worked two jobs to make ends meet. Despite his having to cut his education short, he was very intelligent and did well in his career. I think he enjoyed being his own boss and having his own company, which is how he finished his career. Dad never felt sorry for himself or complained about anything. A few years ago on his birthday, I asked him about his life, and if he had any regrets, and he said none, that he had had a wonderful life, and could not ask for more. He could not think of a single thing he needed for a birthday gift. He felt he had everything.

So I am glad that my dad was a good leader for all us, teaching us to be strong and independent, confident in ourselves and willing to take risks. He took good care of us and in the end, we took good care of him. We love our dad and will miss him very much, but we will never forget his wonderful spirit. [End.]

My Mom thinks the birth order of the boys is Eddie, Roy, Arthur, Earl, Charlie, and Asa Jr. Interesting that the 'junior' would be last. 3. SSDI has Charles D. Fink, born 1 Oct 1898 and d. 26 Dec 1989, in Maine, SSN 007-38-6671 issued 1956-57 in Maine.

4. C. Dennis Fink to GHS, 24 May 2003: "Hi George: I finally got your latest e-mails printed out. I had to get a new printer to accomplish that.I'll try to provide you with as much family history re. Mary and I as I can round up. Much of it is lost and much of it was never told to me. I'll explain that as I go along.

Let's start with my father. You have his dates of birth and death correct. His was Charles Dewey Fink and I am Charles Dennis Fink. I never went by Charles but I have to sign most papers as"Charles D". but sometimes I sign them "C. Dennis"

Much of the early history of my Father I got from Zella Fink, Uncle Art's daughter. She now lives(just barely) in the Odd Fellows home in Concord NH. Lindy went to see her not too long ago. Zella told me that she thought that Uncle Earl's "Sunrise and Sunset" contains a lot of mis-memories.

My farther was in WWI as a carpenter's mate on board the minesweeper "Heron". During 1919(I think) he was sick with the flu that was going around the world at that timed. Apparently he almost died. Eventually he recovered. In WWII he was a Chief Carpenter's Mate with the Navy Seebees. He was with a construction battalion that participated in the Solomon Island campaign. His battalion build airfields. On one of those islands he build a raised platfrom to sleep on so as to get away from land crabs. During an air raid he rolled out out of bed the wrong way, fell to the ground and broke his back. After about 3 months of rehab he recovered qute well and was discharged.

Now back to 1919. My father apparently did go to live with Uncle Earl in Franklin, NH. Earl's 8th grade teach was a very pretty young lady(if I have the correct photo) and soon they were married. Unfortunately, my farther overlooked a few medical flaws in his future inlaws. Thus, my father married the first Mary Fink in 1920 and poor Mary died of TB about 2 years later. I presummed that the SSDI has a Mary Fink residing in a Franking NH cemetrary. If not there try Tilton, NH. Her death probably occurred in 1922 or 23. I have to make educated guesses at some of the above history because it was a forbidden subject of conversation in our household, I first found out abou8 it when I found some photographs and asked my mother "who is this lady". She has to admit it was my father;s first wife but nothing more was ever said.

So, sometime in 1924 or 25 while my father was in the Boston area he met my mother. Again, not a topic for conversation in our household. I think I can find out when they were married. How my mother came to be in Boston "we don't talk about". However it goes something like this.

My grandmother, Charlote Richardson, was probably born in the late 1870's or early 80's in Goldboro, Nova Scotia. Goldboro is locate northeast of Halifax, (It was called Goldboro because people found gold there. In fact I probably have most of it, given to me by my father. It consists of about 10 small pieces of quartz containing about 1/10 of an ounce oi gold. So much for Goldboro.) My grandmother married a fellow by the name of Green. He was either an goldsmith or a silversmith. Apprantly shortly after their marriage then moved to Boston. In those days two-three ships a day sailed betweeen Halifax and Boston. My mother and "Uncle Howard" were born in Boston. Grandfather Green was somewhat successful. However, after work he apparently usually indulged in a drink or two, three, four, etc. with the boys down at the local pub. Grandma Green got tired of all that, packed up the kids, and stompped off to Goldboro, exactly when I don't know. Apprently they lived in Goldbord and other nearby places until the early 20's when they moved back to Boston. To my knowledge my grandmpother Green never became an US citizen. She died in about 1955 while living with my parents in So, Berwick Maine. the SSDI should have her in Woodlawn Cemetary, So, B erwick Maine. We have a "Richardson" bible which may have more info. re Grandmother Green. It is Ogunquit. If it every stops raining and warms up we will go there and seen what info. it contains.

You askec why you could not find us in the 1930 census. That's probably bacause we were in an old touring car somewhat between Crestwood Road, Medford, MA and Rocks Road, Seabrook NH. During the late 1920's my father was doing very well as a lathing contractor. He had just build a new house oin Crestwood Road. After the 29" crash his work dried up and in the summer of 1930 the bank forclosed. He found an old farm in Seabook; no electricty, well water and a pump in the kitchen, but, it has a farm and hen house. That's what he really wanted.

Anyway, I suspect that the census takers never caught up with us.

Well, that's enough history for now. I have better information re. the family of the second Mary Fink. I'll send that along soon.

Hope you and Marge are doing well. -- Denny
