Notes for Reuben Barker: Posted on reply to my message on 11/04/2002 Reuben is quite an uncommon given name given this time period. I have a Reuben Barker in my database. No birth date, but according to siblings probably around 1812-1820? Reuben was born in Mecklenburg, Tompkins (now Schuyler) County, New York. Many from this area moved west into Naples area--what is now Livingston and/or Ontario County, NY. Reuben's father was Zalmon Barker (1775-1860). Mother unknown. Grandparents were Elihu Barker (1744-1840) and Bethia Thomas (1751-1826). 11/05/2002 I asked her for the records of her Reuben Barkers brothers and sisters to see the names : Response from Kathleen is as follows. Now I'm not positive that your Reuben Barker is my Reuben Barker. More checking is needed to prove, however their age and location make it probable. Also, your Reuben names his son "Ancel" which is the name of my Reuben's brother. Coincidence or relationship? Here are my Reuben's siblings: Ansel b. 1813, m. After digging through several records I went to the LDS family web site and retrieved several files two of which have Reuben attached to a Zolman Barker as his Father. Birth dates and years have matched. Census records being found and family records have connected us to this family. (2002-11) 1840 Census Records: Barker, Reuben NY ONTARIO CO. Barker Eva C. 14 Feb 1889 62 I have a feeling that Reuben Barker was named after Reuben McIntyre a prominent neighbor to the Elihu Barker (Zalmon's Father) his will and testament notes found on the Message Board; The following will of Reuben McIntyre was signed on Oct. 18, 1831, five days before he died on Oct. 23, 1831. He was 53 years, 6 months, 22 days old at the time of his death. Reuben reportedly was buried in the McIntyre Settlement Cemetery. By 1813, Reuben had settled in the town of Hector, then in Seneca County, southeast of the village of Mecklenburg. Hector was part of the New Military Tract opened for settlement in the 1790s. This area would later be in Tompkins County and then Schuyler County. On July 5, 1813, he purchased 75 acres in Hector 67 from Cornelius Bruyn. This land was on the western side of Hector 67 and adjacent to land owned by Robert Dickens. Within seven years, if the order of names in the 1820 census for Hector indicates locational proximity, Reubens neighbors included: Jeremiah Ayers, Ashbel Trumans, Elihu Barker, Thomas W. Davis, Jehemiah Osborn, and Joshua Morgan. Just south in Hector 77 McIntyre Settlement, a small community, had formed as early as 1805. There were a number of McIntyres living in this area in the early 1800s -- Zimri, Major, Ira, Thomas, two Williams. Their relationship to Reuben has not been determined by us as yet. William McIntyre, who was a witness to Andrew Stevensons will in 1816, may have been his father. From his will, we know that Reuben had the following children from a first wife: Sabrina, Roxy, Rosetta, Melinda, Dewitt Clinton, and Genette. With Julia, his second wife, he had one child: Loiza. The name of the daughter married to William Crawford is not specified in these documents. Some have concluded that it was Loiza, the youngest child. However, information from researchers in Ohio indicates that Sabrina married William Crawford and married a Vanderhoef second. Roxy also married a Vanderhoef. Reubens wife Julia, executor Jonathan Owen 2nd, and Gilbert Stevensons wife Elizabeth/Betsey were the children of Joshua Owen and Zippora Winters. Julia was born in 1793 in Orange County, N.Y. Her sister Betsey was born in 1786 in Orange County. Her brother Jonathan was born in 1799 in Orange County, married Mehitable Hetty Cleveland, died in 1846, and was buried in the Harvey/Buck Hill Cemetery. Julias other siblings, who are not mentioned in the will documents, were: Lucy, Nathaniel Moore, and Sally. Executor Gilbert Stevenson was born in 1776 in Charlotte/Washington County, NY, and was the son of Andrew Stevenson, ~1747-1816, another early Hector settler. Gilbert died in 1832, a year after Reuben. The witnesses to this will -- William Godding, Tunis Ammack, and Woodard White -- appear to have been friends and neighbors. For more information on the Owens and Stevensons, see the other wills and deeds posted on this site. Every effort has been made to accurately transcribe the following document and preserve the original spelling. - Provided by descendants of Gilbert Stevenson and Betsey Owen: Lynn Stevenson Fisher, [email protected], and James and Georgianna Stevenson, [email protected]. 1831 Will of Reuben McIntyre and Proof Tompkins County Courthouse: B: 274-284 The Executors named in the last will and Testament of Reuben McIntyre late of the town of Hector in the County of Tompkins deceased appeared and prayed that the said will might be proved and recorded according to the provisions of the Revised Statutes of the State of New York and made satisfactory proof by affidavits on file in the office of the said Surrogate that notice of this application had been duly served on all the heirs and de _ i _ees [debitees?] of the said deceased. There are so many rumors and stories in relation to the matter that it is hard to get the facts. As near as we can learn, Merrick Barker and two or three young men had some disturbance with M. Jacob Link, proprietor of the American Hotel, and drove them out of the house with a chair. When the lads got outside they broke out some windows and link went out and fired five shots at them from a pistol. Young Barker was hit in the right hand and hip. We learn at the time of going to press that the boys father will have Mr. Link arrested and then the facts can be ascertained. Courtesy of Cameron County Historical Society The American Hotel, ( Im told by some old timers) is now the Moose club located on east Allegheny Avenue in Emporium. I had My brother ( Chief of Police) Al see if he could find any documentation of this "Trial" In the promontorys office. Hes in pretty tight with the Court House Gang. All that was found was Magistrate Larabees arraignment notations, a Bench warrant for J. Link. ( apparently he got his dates mixed up failed to appear) and the closure. Merricks father George did press charges, but when heads cooled and time passed the matter would eventually be dropped, or "null prosed" to use legal terms. This would suggest that Merrick and friends may have instigated the incident. More About George W. BARKER DIES: LONG TIME TEACHER Miss Cora E. Barker died early last Thursday morning in the Maple View Rest Home, Coudersport, where she had been a guest for the past two years, and another chapter in the history of Cameron County has been closed. Miss Barker had taught in local schools for approximately 50 years when she retired in 1947. She began teaching before the turn of the century and she received permanent certification as a teacher on June 2, 1900, with certificate no. 6. She was born September 25, 1876 in Shippen Township, the daughter of late George and Martha Housler Barker, pioneer Cameron County residents. She was educated in local schools, and began teaching while in her teens. Miss Barker had taught in the Plank Road Hollow School, the East Ward School, several other Township Schools and at the time of her retirement she was principal of the old West Ward School on West Sixth Street. She taught principally in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. She taught three generations of many Emporium families. Her former pupils will remember fondly her love of the English language, with an emphasis on poetry. They will, too, remember perhaps not so fondly her teaching on the diagramming of a sentence, although it was of great value in later educational studies. They, too, will remember her discipline which was melted out with a stern mien, but awfully tender heart. They, too, will remember her love of community and everything that was fine and beautiful. Miss Barker was a member of the First Methodist Church, and the local branch of the PSEA. She is survived locally by two nieces, Mrs. Roy (Mildred) Gates and Mrs. Thomas (Clairce) Choick and two nephews living in other areas also survive. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Coppersmith Funeral Home with the Rev. Samuel D. Regester, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial followed in Newton Cemetery. Notes for Merrick Charles Barker: Cameron County Press - Thursday, July 4, 1889 SHOOTING AFFAIR. We learn that there was a shooting affray at the American Hotel Monday evening. Courtesy of Cameron County Historical Society The American Hotel, ( I am told by some old timers) is now the Moose club located on east Allegheny Avenue in Emporium. I had My brother ( Chief of Police) Al see if he could find any documentation of this "Trial" In the Prothonotarys office. Hes in pretty tight with the Court House Gang. All that was found was Magistrate Larabees arraignment notations, a Bench warrant for J. Link. ( apparently he got his dates mixed up failed to appear) and the closure. Merricks father George did press charges, but when heads cooled and time passed the matter would eventually be dropped, or "null prossed" to use legal terms. This would suggest that Merrick and friends may have instigated the incident. Barker early Saturday morning Cameron County lost one of its most popular citizens. Merrick, who had been custodian at the courthouse for the past quarter of a century, died suddenly at 6:30 o'clock in his home from a heart seizure. He had worked as usual Friday but had admitted that he wasn't up to his usual good health. Mr. Barker was born in Cameron County, the son of George and Martha Barker, pioneer residents of the area. Had he lived until June 8th he would of been 81 years of age. With Merrick's death a half of century of public service by a father and son combination is ended. He assumed the courthouse position 26 years ago at the death of his father who had held the same post for thirty years. He had endeared himself to every worker in the courthouse through many acts of thoughtfulness and in the efficient manner in which he took care of his job. Prior to assuming the courthouse position Mr. Barker had been a powder worker and timber jack. He was also popular with the public and his neighbors. He numbered his friends in the hundreds and the profusion of floral tributes testified to the esteem in which he was held in the community. Children will miss him as will an entire community. He is survived by his wife, the former Nora Housler; by five children: Ronald, Neil, and Mrs. Thomas (Clarice) Cohick, of Emporium; Merion of Kenvil, New Jersey and Mrs. Harlan (Beatrice) Floyd, New Castle PA. Two sisters, Cora Barker and Mrs. Lena Benson of Emporium, one brother, Edgar Barker of Painsville, Ohio and several grandchildren also survive.
