McCorkleKatie J.Katie Jeanette McCorkle, 74, of North Little Rock, died Saturday, Feb. 7, of complications following a three year battle with multiple myloma.

A gentle woman of tremendous faith, she had been a very active member of Park Hill Baptist Church and a loving caretaker over the years for family, friends and church members. Beneficiaries of her volunteer activities included the Youth Home inc., Jacksonville Nursing Home, Brownies, Cub Scouts, PTA Council, Sunday School and Meals on Wheels, among other groups.

Born in the railroad town of Slater, Mo., she grew up with the father of former Razorback Joe Kleine and was an avid Razorback fan for as long as she lived in North Little Rock, where she first moved with her husband and family in 1948.

Family members talk of the spiritual guidance she offered them in difficult times, of her patience and upbeat outlook on life. At a moment's notice for as long as she lived, they say, she could recite with great expression a charming poem about Jonah and the Whale that she had learned as a little girl.

But she also loved giraffes ever since a visit to Disney World years ago when a little tram stopped beside a corral of these long necked animals and she looked into their soulful eyes, her daughter Cindy Cherry said. In celebration of the joy she took in collecting giraffe figures ever after, all of her family wore one of the many giraffe brooches she had collected over the years to her funeral last week.

In the end, she was gravely ill but still thinking of others, her daughter Cindy said. "We told her we would be okay, she wouldn't go till we told her that. She was a very sweet mama."

Besides her daughter Cindy, survivors include a son, Mark McCorkle of Little Rock; two other daughters, Teresa Tidwell of North Little Rock and Sarah Means of Kennesaw, Ga., brothers, Henry Brame of Kansas City, Kan., Dr. William Brame of Warrensburg, Mo.; sisters, Ala May Schneider of Slater, Mo., Elizabeth Meers of Little Rock, Eva More of Fredrickstown, Ohio, Anna Bell Cassels of Tampa, Fla., Dr. Martha Wilson of Godsden, Ala. and Bonnie Burks of Saline City, Mo., seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
