| Scott | Dr. A.H. | Dr. Andrew Homer Scott, who for 36 years was a practising physician of Little Rock, died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock at his home, 1919 Louisiana street, after an illness that kept him in bed for nearly six months prior to his death. An accident cut short a career of unusual usefullness during which he had been singularly free from illness. He had returned from a trip to Chicago when an attack of heart failure took him while he was in his bath room and caused him to fall against the tub, sustaining an injury to his hip which caused him to take to his bed. Dr. Scott never was able to leave it thereafter for any considerable length of time. The funeral services will be held from the residence of the family at 4:30 tomorrow; in charge of Rev. Dr. T.E. Sharp, pastor of the First M.E. church. The burial will be in Mount Holly cemetery. The pall-bearers will be announced later. Was a Third Generation Arkansas. Dr. Scott was a soft-spoke, well informed gentleman of the old school, a descendant of one of the most distinguished families in Arkansas, being the grandson of Judge Andrew Scott, appointed by President James Monroe as the first territorial judge of Arkansas. Judge Scott emigrated to Arkansas from Missouri upon the organization of the territory and was for many years a prominent factor in territorial affairs. John R. Homer Scott, the father of Dr. Scott, was a well-know citizen of Pope county and prominently connected with state politics for many years. He served twice as clerk of the Circuit Court of Pope county, as state senator for Conway and Searcy counties and as a member of the constitutional convention. He entered the Confederate service as captain and participated in the battles of Elk Horn and Farmington. His War Record Dr. Andrew H Scott was born at Dover, in Pope county, December 18, 1840. His early education he received at Platteville, Wis, and Galeria, Wis. He was pursuing his studies at the famous Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire when the Civil war began. He returned home immediately after Arkansas seceded and enlisted for services. He attained the rank of captain of a company in Gorden's regiment. Cabell's brigade and went on the Missouri raid. He was at Pilot Knob, Jefferson City and Booneville. After the war he attended the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia until he received his diploma as doctor of Medicine. He began practice in his native city. Dover, and remained there for five years. As a Little Rock Physician Dr. Scott took up the practice of medicine in this city about 36 years ago and continued to practice until within a few months of his death, although recently he limited his clientele. He maintained an office on the corner of Markham for upwards of 30 years. Although Dr. Scott was well known and universally esteemed, he made it a life long practice to take no active part in politics and he faithfully adhered to this practice throughout his long, and useful career. His only public office-not an elective one-was that of penitentiary physician, which he held upon the retirement of Dr. A.H.Lenow from that position about 1878. Next to Dr. Lenow, he is said to have been the oldest physician in the city in point of resident pratice. The two were close personal friends. Had Seen Thousand Babes Born During his last days, Dr. Scott proudly mentioned to a brother doctor that he had brought a thousand human beings into this world-enough, as he said, to populate a small town. It was love and devotion for his old Clients and their children that caused him to continued the practice of medicine long after he wished to retire and he was in financial circumstances to justify his retirement. An Instance of His Kindliness His kindly character is well illustrated by this instance alone: Twenty-five years ago, before there was a bridge between Little Rock and Argenta, he crossed the river many times in a skiff during good and bad weather, to attend a suffering man in Argenta, who finally died. When his bill of $150 was presented to the widow, she sobbed: "Doctor, I haven't a dollar to pay you with. My little children and myself are penniless." "Madam" he gravely replied, "I can better afford to lose it than you afford to pay it, so we will wipe it out." Of all of Dr. Scott's grateful friends, the most grateful are the grown-up children of this widow, who are now honored residents of Little Rock. Dr. Scott's services were so sought by his old-time clients and their children that he never felt that he could take vacations. One of the few that he took was a trip to Europe some years ago. His Family On May 2, 1877, Dr. Scott married Miss Kate Embry, a daughter of Ben T. Embry, a prominent merchant and planter of Gallarock, later of Atkins. Four children survive this union, Embry, Hobert, A.H. Jr. and Mrs. Lloyd England, wife of Capt. England. Mrs. L.A.Howell of Russellville is his sister, and her son, Dr. A.R.Howell of Argenta, is his nephew. Dr. Scott was a member of the State Medical Society, of the Pulaski County Medical Society, of which he was once president, and of Omer Weaver Camp, United Confederate Veterans.; ag5/1/09 The funeral Dr. A.H.Scott will be held this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock from the residence, 1010 Louisiana street., Rev. Among his books and pamphlets were "The South in Public Education." "Illustrated Arkansas," "History of American People" "Education in Arkansas," "Russia at the World's Fair," "English and Russian." The latter publication was republished in Russia. He was registrar for the Arkansas S.A. R. from 1892 to 1894. He was a member of the American Institue in 1894, and an honorary member of the Pensylvania and West Virginia historical societies.
