Camden, March 31 - Dr. J. W. Meek, one of the best known physicians in Arkansas, died at his home here today. He was born in Union county in 1850. He represented this district in the state Senate for two terms. He was ruling elder of the local Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife and four sons, Judge Meek of Fordyce, A.N. Meek of this city, J.W. Meek Jr. of Bradley, and H.E. Meek of Stuttgart. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Presbyterian church, the Rev. T.L. Green officiating.; ag4/1/17

Mrs. Annie Arrabelle Mchaffy, aged 50, wife of Thomas M. Mchaffy, died yesterday at a local hospital, following an illness of four weeks. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 from the family residence, 2102 Louisiana street, conducted by the Rev. J.D. Hammond, pastor of Winfield Memorial Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. James Thomas. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

Mrs. Mchaaffy was widely known in Little Rock and throughout the state. She was active in church work. Born in Belfast, Grant county, May 11, 1867, she moved with her parents at an early age to Benton, where she lived until about 21 years ago, when she came to Little Rock, residing here since. She met Mr. Mchaffy at Benton, where they were married 33 years ago.

Surviving her are her husband, three sons, James W. Mchaffy, city attorney; Charles Mchaffy, a local attorney, and Carl Mchaffy; three daughters, the Misses Helen, Pat and Lucille Mchaffy, all of Little Rock; five brothers, A.B., E.A. and Fred Poe of Little Rock, Dr. W.D. Poe of Sherman, Tex., and O.S. Poe of Fort Smith, and six sisters, Mrs. A.J. Graham, Mrs. Birdie Smith, Mrs. E.E. Hodges, Mrs. Beulah Seaman, Mrs. Arthur Herndon and Miss Alice Poe, all of Little Rock.; ag5/22/17

MelbernLillardNorford, Sept. 6 - Lillard Melbern, a negro from Batesville, fell dead four miles south of this place Tuesday while propelling a hand car. He and three other negroes were taking W.M. Hogan and a tie inspector on the handcar to Berry to load ties. At the Vest switch they slowed down and the negro fell from the hand car dead. Heart disease was the cause.; ag9/7/1917

MeltonCeliaNewberg, Jan. 13 - Mrs. Celia Melton, aged 22, wife of Oscar Melton, who lives two miles east of here, was fatally burned Thursday when her clothing caught fire from a heating stove. She was alone with two small children at the time.

Meredith of 304 Schiller avenue, Little Rock, and William Meredith of Shreveport, La., Mrs. Meredith was a member of the Asbury Methodist church. MerrickGeorge A.George A. Merrick, aged 75, a civil engineer and descendant of one of the oldest Arkansas families, died at St. Vincent's infirmary at 8 o'clock last night, after an illness of about a month. He was in failing health for more than a year. About a month ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy while at the Capital hotel. He lived at 2010 West Seventeenth street.

Mr. Merrick was born at 315 East Capitol avenue in the old Merrick home. He spent all his life in Little Rock, except while participating in the Civil war. He was a member of the famous "Woodruff's Battery," commanded by William R. Woodruff, founder of the Gazette. He was captured and imprisoned at Johnson's Island, in the latter part of the war. After the war he returned to Little Rock. He received his education in Little Rock public shools and St. John's College here. He was one of the pioneer civil engineers in this state. For a number of years he served as surveyor for Pulaski county. He is survived by one brother, Thomas Dwight Merrick; two sisters, Mrs. M.B. Callum of Montcalm, N.J., and Mrs. Lewis Polk of Little Rock.

Funeral services will be held at 4 this afternoon at the James Cook & Son Company parlors. The Rev. C.P. Parker officiate. Burial will be in Mount Holly cemetery.; ag4/3/17

Conway, May 17 - Judge Edward Monroe Merriman, aged 73, pioneer resident of Conway, died suddenly at his home here today. Judge Merriman had risen as usual and gone to the kitchen. A short time later, Mrs. Merriman went into the room and found him lying dead upon the floor. He had been in ill health since last winter. Funeral services will be conducted from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Heiligers, Saturday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. J.William Boyer.

Judge Merriman was born in Auburn, N.Y. He entered West Point Military Academy in 1863 and was graduated in June, 1867; He served in the regular army until 1871, retiring with the rank of Captain. His services were in New York harbor, at New Orleans and on the Kansas frontier, protecting settlers against Indians.

He came here July 4, 1871. In 1873 he was appointed postmaster and the following year he served as first lieutenant of the Arkansas militia during the Brooks-Baxter trouble. He was elected mayor in 1876. He served several terms as justice of the peace and in 1882 was elected Faulkner county judge, serving until 1888. A few years later he moved to Little Rock, where he continued the practice of law and served in the legislature as representative of Faulkner county. He returned to Conway about 12 years ago and since had been practicing law here. He was a direct descendant of John Quincy Adams on his mother's side. He was married in Conway September 6, 1873 to Miss Matilda Menkus, a native of Prussia. Surviving him are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Sam Heiligers of Conway, and one son, E. Nathan Merriman of Fort Smith, and six grandchildren.; ag5/18/17

Mr. Millard was born in Montgomery county, N.Y., November 9, 1830. He spent the early years of his life there and removed to Iowa with his parents. In 1856 he married Miss Jeannette Slater and moved to Little Rock in 1864. With his brother in law he established on of the first photograph galleries in Little Rock and made a picture of Markham and Main streets in 1865, just after the close of the war. Walter Baxter Millard, aged 42, died at 3 yesterday morning at the family residence, 1410 Gaines street. He was born in Little Rock and spent most of his life here. He was first lieutenant in the "Old Fletcher Rifles", a military orginization in Little Rock which entered the Second Arkansas Volunteers during the Spanish American war. He is survived by three sisters, Miss Ida Millard of Little Rock, Mrs. F.O. Rodgers of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. E. Griffey of Magazine, and one brother, W.H. Millard of Little Rock. Funeral services will be held at 3 this afternoon at the family residence. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.

He had been in ill health for several years and had been confined to his home for the past two weeks with uremic poisoning. He was a son of the late R.H.M. Mills who died two years ago.
