She was a member of West Point Baptist Church, and retired in 1991 after 22 years as a quality control reviewer for the Arkansas Social Services. She was a former caseworker for the White County Welfare Department and a school teacher in the West Point School. She received the top honor from the Governor of Arkansas for excellence in fraudulent case investigating within the Arkansas Social Services Food Stamp Division.

Survivors include her husband, Jake C. She was a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs Inc. and was instrumental in the founding of the Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs Inc. She also served as its president, retiring to become editor of the Arkansas Gardener, a position she held for 30 years. She was active in the American National Daffodil and Iris Societies, a member of the Little Rock Garden Club, and belonged to the Garden Clubs of America. She was a member of the Junior League of Little Rock and the Country Club of Little Rock.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Robert Alexander Sanford of Memphis; a daughter, Otelia (Sissy) Cox of Little Rock; a sister, Virginia Alexander of Scott; and seven grandchildren.

He was a scholar and educator, and a Mothodist. He was past president of Young Democrats Club of Pulaski County, a Master Mason, Royal Arch Mason, 32nd degree Mason, SHriner, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was Regional Teacher of the Year for Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas; a chemistry and physics instructor for 28 years in Jacksonville, and ASU-Beebe; and taught in the Governor's School at Hendrix College five years.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen Carpenter Screeton of Caot; one son, Michael Brent Screeton of Cabot; three sisters, Eldean Screeton Carpenter of Beebe, Harriet Scharlene Screeton of Sequim, Wash., and Judy Gaylene Hosto of Port Angeles, Wash.; two brothers, Kenneth Russell Screeton of Little Rock, and Ralph Byrd Screeton of North Little Rock.

He was active in Jacksonville Rotary Club and Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church. In 1992, he and his wife Sue began managing LaQuinta Hotels and managed the LaQuinta Hotel in Little Rock at Markham and Shackleford for the last six years.

He was retired from the United States Army and Arkansas State Highway Department.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris; sons, J.C. and Rusty, both of Cabot; his daughter, Sherri Kovach, of North Little Rock; five grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Smith of Dallas.

He was a cousin to George Smith of Lonoke, and his ancestors were early settlers in Lonoke.

Survivors include his wife, LaRue Bailey Smith of Tavares, Fla; three daughters, Laura Wickham of Columbus, Ga., Jennifer Tollison of Raleigh, N.C. and Lisa Bywater of Orlando, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral was April 20 at the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, N.C. by Dr. B.E. Pettit, with burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson by McDougald Funeral Home.

Jennie Lorene Smith, 88, of Jacksonville died July 15, 1997.

She taught school before entering and graduating from the Arkansas State Hospital Licensed Psychiatric Technical Nurse Program. She was a member of the Highland United Methodist Church at Little Rock and a member of the Alice Jones Bible Class. She was a charter member of the Sweet Adelines and a pianist for S.C.A.T., a senior citizens' bank.

Survivors include a daughter, Anita Yearian of Sherwood; a brother, R.H. McCollum Jr. of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren

SmithJohnie R.Johnie R. Smith, aged 87, of Hickory Plains, Arkansas, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000.

He worked with his brother, the late Hubert Smith, in a wholesale candy business. He served as a lieutenant of Guard Forces at Maumelle Ordnance Plant during World War II. After the war, he had his own business, the Wholesale Candy Company in North Little Rock. He was a member of the Hickory Plains Methodist Church.

He served 20 years on the Des Arc School Board and served many years on the Hickory Plains Cemetery Board, having served for 20 years as its secretary/treasurer before retiring.

Surviving Mr. Smith are his wife of 57 years, Jessie.; a son, Jerry L. Smith of Commerce, Mo.; a daughter, Mary Grace Smith of Little Rock; one granddaughter; two step-grandchildren; and one sister, Dovie Green of Des Arc.

He was retired from the United States Air Force and a member of the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, Sergeants Association, Paralyzed Veterans Association and the Disabled Veterans Association.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Smith of the home; five stepchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
