Pvt. David Osborn, 2nd Ky Inf, CSA

    First Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade

Private David Osborn, 2nd Kentucky Infantry, Co H

David was born in Scott Co. Ky, somewhere between 1840-41. Prior to the war he moved to Boone County to join his brother who ran a carriage shop in Florence. When war came he rode South and enlisted in Co. H, 2nd Ky Reg.

He served with the 2nd, and was captured with it, at Ft. Donelson - where he received a leg wound. Ed Porter Thompson's "History of the Orphan Brigade" states the wound was slight, but family history has it that the wound was serious enough to bother him for the rest of his life. David was imprisoned at Camp Morton and was listed on the roster of exchanged soldiers with the regiment. Nothing further is known of David's service during the war.

David died in 1910 and was buried in the Osborn plot of the Florence city cemetary. Fire destroyed the city's records of where everyone was buried, and in the late '50s vandals knocked over and tossed around the original markers. It wasn't until later that David's resting spot was roughly determined within the Osborn plot. A new headstone was placed upon his grave by his descendants, notably Virginia Osborn Lainhart who did all the detective work.
