First Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade Capt. Joseph Crenshaw Bethel, Co. A, 4th Ky. Inf. Joseph Crenshaw Bethel was born in Barren County, Kentucky, September 30, 1835. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. of Co. A, 4th Ky. Inf. in August 1861, and was promoted to 1st Lt. at Shiloh, April 7, 1862. He fought at Vicksburg and Chickamauga, where he was wounded. He was promoted to Captain on May 28, 1864. He fought throughout the Atlanta Campaign, and the final campaign as mounted infantry, and was present at the surrender at Washington, Georgia, May 6, 1865. After the war, he was employed in the dry goods trade in Louisville, rising to become president of the Carter Dry Goods Company. Joseph Bethel died on April 27, 1911, and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
