Early History of Mary Walker, MD - Tent # 28

Mary Walker, MD - Tent #28; Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861--1865, was organized on Saturday, February 17, 2007 in the Waldport Senior Center, Waldport, Oregon. This followed a luncheon prepared by the Angell Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center of Yachats, Oregon.

The institution was by Mrs. Donna Wood of Fillmore, California a Past National President of DUVCW as well as a past Oregon Department President. She was assisted by Mrs. Perri Parker of Aloha, Oregon who is the current Oregon Department President.   Under the direction of Mrs. Parker four pre-tent meetings were held to prepare for the institution of this new tent which is the first new tent in the Oregon Department in sixty-one years.     It was June 6, 1945 when the last tent in Oregon was instituted.

Sixteen people became charter members: Ardess Christensen,--Barbara Cooper,--Nancy Edwards,--Carol Ginter,--Sue Glen,--Carolyn Kolzow,--Megan Kolzow,--Patricia Kuehlwein,--Alice Moran,--Melissa Neal,--Colleen Nickerson,--Dee Paul,--Virginia Strickland,--Edna Marie Thorn,--Marcia Wilson,--including the late Zira Kahl.

The name of Mary Walker, MD was given the tent after a vote by the members. Dr. Mary E. Walker was a physician in the Civil War.

Carolyn Kolzow was our first tent President followed by Colleen Nickerson.

Included in the event was a poem written by charter member, Sue Glen.   It is called As If in a Dream.
