John HELLENBRAND (1854-??) was the younger brother of Charles Hellenbrand, confectioner in Salem, and son of Martha FOSTER Hellenbrand (whose brother was Philip Foster of Foster Farm). He married a KIMBALL and he, his wife and mother/law moved to Tillamook (ca. 1876) where he set up a 200 acre farm/dairy. He also opened a store and the first Post Office at Neskowin. He is said to have been active on the local school board. Is this familiar to anyone? It is about the sum total of what I know. Can anyone add commentary or fact? (I do have a biographical notice and his m/law's probate.)

ANDERSON, MCCORMICK, BABBIDGE. With Liisa Penner's wonderful help and amazing resources, I have been able to clear up the story of my Finnish gr.-gr.-grandmother's arrival into Astoria. After her first husband, J. Hellsten died in a train accident, Justina Sophia Hellsten left Erie, Pennsylvaniaabout 1873 with Axel Seaborg's group of about 30 Finns and arrived in Astoria with her young daughter, also named Justina Sophia Hellsten. The elder Justina married (2.)Axel Victor Anderson and had three more children: Ida, William, and Alfred. The younger Justina married John McCormick 28 Mar 1889 and had four children: Julia, Hugh (my grandfather), Margaret, and Beatrice. Justina Sophia and John ran a boarding house in Astoria. The children attended school in Astoria. Ida married Edward (Ned ) Babbidge, one of four sons in a riverboating family. She became the first female licensed mate on the lower Columbia, and with her husband became well known as their riverboat, the Elfin, stopped along the little towns along the route to Portland. I STILL NEED TO KNOW:Did Ida and Edward BABBIDGE have children? Who? Has anyone seen a photo of the ELFIN? I would dearly love to find one. Also, who didWilliam ANDERSON and Alfred ANDERSON marry and who were their children?

Christine J. Macgenn - 20 June 1998, 10:21 am

My great grandmother, Charlotte A. Barton, died in Seaside on July 3, 1912. Both her married name and given name were Barton. I believe she was on a July 4th train excursion to Seaside when she died of choking to death aboard the train. Do you have a record of her death, obituary or since it was an unusual death, an article in the local paper.

My grandmother was Elizabeth Hess.  Here are some names and dates from inside her bible: She apparently was born in Oregon on October 31, 1890. She was a school teacher. I have a list of all the schools she taught in in Oregon and Washington. She was also in the Navy during WWI. Her parents were Charles Nathan Hess born 12/14/? and Jane Ann Gilmore Hess born 5/2/?. Grandmother's siblings were Ellen Lucinda Hess White 4/1/1878, Minnie Hess 12/15/1883, Carlotta (Charlotte) Hess -- 9/11/1884 Clatsop Plains and she died 4/15/1970 and is buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, Or. Lorinne Jane Hess 4/15/1894, Arthur Hess10/5/1880, Henry Hess 12/3/1887. The earliest Gilmore I have is William Henry Gilmore 11/4/1848... don't know where he was born. Have record of a Christian Clymer Gilmore May 20, 1866 in Marion County Oregon, and a James Logan Gilmore December 17, 1850 -- Des Moines County Iowa.

I have photos of the Hess House that were taken in the early 1900's and again in the early 1980's. I know it is in Astoria but I do not know where. I think many of the Hess's may be buried in Ocean View Cemetry.

The Hess Family was my father's mother's family. My father's name was James Hamilton Macgenn he was born in March 1925 and died in June 1975. His father was Captain Thomas James Macgenn.

I am looking for wahtever records I can find. I am trying to put the pieces together. I was separated from my father when I was very young and know very little of his family. Thank you for whatever assistance you can give me.
