     James Monroe COTTINGHAM, son of Elisha COTTINGHAM Jr. and Nancy PARKER, was born on 25 June 1826 in Six Mile, Bibb County, Alabama.1

James married Anna Elizabeth TRUCKS on 12 February 1852 in Bibb County, Alabama.2

James began military service at age 35 on 8 February 1862 in Randolph, Bibb County, Alabama, when he enlisted as a private in Co. H 29th Alabama Infantry, CSA and continued in service until captured at the Battle of Nashville 15 Dec 1864. He was discharged from the military prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois 18 June 1865 upon the end of the war.

James Monroe COTTINGHAM died on 5 January 1910 in Bibb County, Alabama, at age 83.3 He was buried in Cottingham Cemetery.
