Newton Patton LANGSTON

     Newton Patton LANGSTON, son of Obediah LANGSTON and Virginia E. McELROY, was born on 22 June 1837 in Six Mile, Bibb County, Alabama.1 He was a farmer.

Newton Patton LANGSTON appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1860, in the household of Obediah LANGSTON in Bibb County, Alabama.2

Newton began military service at age 24 on 6 September 1861 in Six Mile, Bibb County, Alabama, when he enlisted as a private in Co. D 20th Alabama Infantry, CSA and continued until surrender 26 April 1865. He served as the cook in his squad which included brother, Jasper. One time he was wounded in the foot, and escaped capture by the Yankees by hiding under some blackberry vines.

Newton married first Mary Caroline CHISM, daughter of John CHISM and Dorinda TERRY, on 17 January 1866 in Bibb County, Alabama.1

Newton Patton LANGSTON appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 29 July 1870 in Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama. The household was listed as Newton Langston, age 33, born Alabama; Permelia, age 29, born Alabama; Wm., age 3 and Mirah, age 6 months, both born Alabama. They were living a few houses away from Dorinda Chism.3

Newton Patton LANGSTON and Mary Caroline CHISM appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 18 June 1880 in Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama. The household was listed as Newton Langston, a 40-year-old farmer; his wife Manie, age 38; son William, age 13, farm labor; daughter Laura, age 9, at home; son James, age 7, at home; daughter Fannie, age 6, at home; son Obediah P., age 5, at home; and son John C, age 2, at home.

Newton married second Frances Ann CHISM, daughter of John CHISM and Dorinda TERRY, on 7 March 1889 in Bibb County, Alabama.

Newton Patton LANGSTON died on 9 April 1915 in Bibb County, Alabama, at age 77.4 He was buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
