John married Martha Cynthia Maddox on 15 December 1878 in Rockdale County, Georgia. She was in the widow of John Lynch Pyle 1833-1874. They were married in 1862.
John Newton ABNEY died on 10 September 1934 in San Francisco, Caliifornia, at age 83. He was buried in Sunset Mausoleum and Columbarium, El Cerrito, Contra Costa County, California.
