     John Kirksey ABNEY, son of Jacob Pope ABNEY, was born in 1825 in Edgefield (now Saluda) County, South Carollina.1

John married first Rebecca Frances White on 8 April 1852 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The service was performed by Rev. J. F. Peterson.2,3

John married second Susan E. Walker on 15 November 1859 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of William G. Walker. The service was performed by Rev. Jesse P. Bodie.2,3

John began military service on 26 September 1863 in McPhersonville, South Carolina, Co. A, "Rutledge Mounted Riflemen and Horse Artillery" as a Private. His unit was redesignated Co. B, 7th South Carolina Cavalry 18 Mar 1864, a part of Gary's Brigade, Dept of Richmond, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. He received a 15-day furlough 21 Dec 1863 - 5 Jan 1864. He was admitted 4 Jul 1864 into Stuart Hospital, Richmond, Virginia with rubeola (measles) and died there.4

John Kirksey ABNEY died on 4 August 1864 in Richmond, Virginia.4 He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
