Hiram READ

M, b. 16 April 1801, d. 29 July 1882
     Hiram READ, son of Asa READ and Maria HULME, was born on 16 April 1801 in Putnam County, Georgia. He was a farmer and attorney.

Hiram married first Margaret Maria BURT, daughter of James BURT and Rebecca BURT, on 19 April 1822 in Putnam County, Georgia.1

Hiram READ was hired by James BURT to be his attorney on 5 November 1823 in Putnam County, Georgia. He was retained to collect debts from the legal representatives of John Mathews, dec'd of Autauga county, Alabama. Mathews was the brother-in-law of James Burt by marriage to his sister, Mary Burt. John Mathews died in January of 1822.2,3

Hiram READ was named an executor in the will of Jesse BURT dated on 11 August 1826 in Putnam County, Georgia.4

Hiram READ was named an executor in the will of James BURT dated 14 May 1829 in Putnam County, Georgia.5

By 1830, Hiram had moved from Putnam County, Georgia to Harris County. He appears on the census. He was in the 1832 gold lottery from Harris County, along with David Read (an attorney). He apparently moved to Muscogee County, Georgia for the 1840 census. David appears on the 1840 and 1850 censuses for Harris County. Hiram appears on the 1850 census for Macon County, Alabama with wife, Elizabeth. By 1870, Hiram had settled in Lee County, Alabama. At one time he operated Wright's Grist Mill near Auburn.

Hiram married second Elizabeth George WILLIS on 10 February 1830 in Talbot County, Georgia. The ceremony was performed by Thomas C. Medwell, JP.

Hiram READ and Elizabeth George WILLIS appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1 October 1850 in District 21, Macon County, Alabama. The household was listed as Hiram Reed, a 49 year old farmer, born North Carolina. He had read estate valued $2000. His 38 year old wife Elizabeth Reed was born in Georgia. Their children were Emily, 20, GA; Susan, 15, GA; Andrew, 13, GA; Sarah, 11, GA; Ann, 9, AL; and Emma, 6, AL. Also in the household were Jordan Baker a 27 year old farmer, born Georgia; and J. C. Burt, a 40 year old farmer, born Georgia. James C. Burt was a brother of Hiram's first wife Maria. Based on this they appear to have migrated from Georgia to Alabama about 1840. That would be the time when all the Indian lands were opened ito settlement in east Alabama.

Hiram READ died on 29 July 1882 in Lee County, Alabama, at age 81. He was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Alabama.
