James W. Batchelor1

James W. Batchelor was born on 7 April 1793 in Halifax County, North Carolina.1,2 He was a farmer and a merchant. He was a prominent man in his county, held several county offices, and served as county treasurer for twenty years.2
James saw military service in 1814 in Halifax County where he appeared on a muster roll for the 2nd Regiment. It is not known what part, if any, his company played in the War of 1812.
James married Mary SHELTON, daughter of Burrell SHELTON and Ann Lane, on 26 October 1816 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was the son of William Batchelor, veteran of the Continental Army, and Elizabeth Bradford.3,4
James W. Batchelor appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 1820 in Halifax County, North Carolina. The household was listed as one male under 10 [William], one male 10-16 [???], one male 26-45 [James, age 27], and one female 26-45 [Mary, age 21?]. They had eight slaves.5
James W. Batchelor and Mary SHELTON appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 5 September 1850 in Halifax County, North Carolina. The household was listed as James W. Bachelor, a 57-year-old farmer; Mary, his wife, age 50; Joe Bachelor, a 24-year-old lawyer; and Martha Bachelor, age 21. James had real estate valued at $6,000. Also living in the household were Stephen Reid, 57, and Henry McLilly, 10; relationships unknown. Everyone in the household was born in Halifax county.6
James W. Batchelor died in late on 20 November 1850 in Halifax County, North Carolina, at age 57.
