James Humphries Brown
     James Humphreys BROWN, son of Asa Robertson BROWN and Mary Sophia Kirkpatrick, was born on 7 August 1869 in San Saba County, Texas. He was also known as Jim.

James Humphreys BROWN appeared on a census, enumerated 3 July 1870, in the household of Asa Robertson BROWN and Mary Sophia Kirkpatrick in San Saba, San Saba County, Texas. He was recorded as John H. Brown, age 11 months.1

James Humphreys BROWN appeared on a census, enumerated 1 June 1880, in the household of his parents Asa Robertson BROWN and Mary Sophia Kirkpatrick in San Saba County, Texas. He was recorded as James H. Brown, age 10.2

James married Mary F. McCarty on 28 January 1890 in San Saba County, Texas. From the 31 Jan 1890 San Saba News and Star under marriage notices: On the 28th day of January, 1890, at the residence of Mr. Jeb McCarty, the bride's father, in the China Creek neighborhood, by the Rev. J. R. Craven, Mr. James H. Brown to Miss Mary McCarty. We congratulate the groom for having captured such a noble prize-- one of China Creek's most amiable young ladies.3

James Humphreys BROWN died on 24 August 1893 in San Saba, San Saba County, Texas, at age 24. According to the memoirs of Texas Ranger Captain Bill McDonald, he was called to San Saba to investigate several murders by the Mob, including that of Jim Brown. He said that although Jim had not attempted to avenge his father's death at the hands of the mob 10-12 years earlier and had not made any threats, he must have still been regarded as a menace because one Sunday night while riding from church with his wife and her brother, he was shot dead from ambush and his wife wounded too. Bill Ogle was later arrested and received a life sentence for the murder.4 He was buried in San Saba City Cemetery.

Jim Brown Killed -- Nephew of the Famous Jim Brown of Lee County Assassinated at San Saba -- San Saba, TX, Aug. 25 -- James H. Brown, the stockman, son of the late Asa P. Brown and a nephew of J. M. Brown who was killed at Garfield Park, Chicago, was assassinated seven miles northwest of this place last night while going home from church. His wife was riding with him and four Buckshot struck her. Her wounds are not serious. Two men armed with shotguns did the work but no cause has been given for the deed except that some parties have had some trouble with him about some cattle.

Jim Brown, a son of Asa Brown, who was found hung some three years ago, was killed last night while returning from church with his wife.
